As part of the commemoration of the First World War Armistice, the service in the parish church included a shower of poppies.
Welcome to Cromer May I welcome you all whether you are a local or visiting the area.
If you want to relax, then the beach, parks and gardens are all in the vicinity of the town, whilst we have some great walks for those wanting more challenging activities. A wide range of shops are there to serve you, and there are plenty of independent coffee shops, cafes and restaurants to satisfy your taste buds.
The Cromer crab is famous throughout the world, feeding off the chalk bed which is approximately 200 metres offshore. You can watch the delicacy being offloaded from the crab boats on the East beach during the day (though this depends on the tides) and they are available to buy from various fishermen's shops around town. Paddling, surfing, rock pooling and crab catching are great family activities with safety on our Blue flag beaches and seas looked after by the RNLI crews and lifeguards (during the season) and also HM Coastguard. The Henry Blogg museum tells the story of the most decorated and courageous coxswain in the RNLI, whilst the Cromer museum behind the church informs you of the history of the town and the story of the West Runton mammoth.
If sports are more to your liking, we have the Royal Cromer Golf club, the grass and hard courts as well as squash at Cromer Lawn Tennis & Squash Club, watching cricket at the Overstrand Road ground,
and football (at present) at Cabbell Park on Mill Road.
Pitch n Putt, Putting & Adventure Golf and Bowls are on offer at Runton Road and bowls also at Suffield park on Station Road.
Our last remaining end of the pier show and cinema offer indoor entertainment as well as local pubs with live music. Train and bus connections and local taxis can transport you to other locations or activities throughout North Norfolk.
The Deep History Coast project tells the story via an app and AR of when Mammoths walked what is now the North Sea.
During the summer we have two weeks of children's activities and a week of our famous carnival festivities organised by Cromer VEO, New Year's Day fireworks from the pier and the Crab and Lobster Festival in May. All of these are organised by groups of dedicated volunteers. Cromer has a full year of activities and these can be found at thisiscromer.co.uk.
I hope you find this Town Guide of interest and a useful source of information.

Cromer’s History
A view from the west cliffs in the 1880s. Fishing boats work from the beach, the western prom has not been built and the last of the jetties is still in place.
At the time of King William's Domesday records,
1086, there is no mention of the town of Cromer.
Instead, we read of Shipden, a town that now lies
beneath the sea. In medieval times we read of
Cromer, alias Shipden. The natural break in the cliffs
now known as the Gangway was the centre of the
town, with fishermen and merchants plying their
trade from the beach below, and sheep farmers
keeping their flocks on the hills behind the town.
In 1285 the king granted Cromer a Friday market
and a yearly fair of eight days. By the 15th century
the town was sufficiently prosperous for the large
church of St Peter and St Paul to be built, replacing
Shipden's lost church of St Peter. In 1565 Cromer is
listed as a landing place with a pier, with 117
householders. The merchants traded far afield, and
Cromer vessels crossed the North Sea, sailed to the
Baltic and even to Iceland and Greenland.
The trading vessels of Cromer continued to land on
its open beach until almost the end of the 19th
century, when the railways offered a more efficient
means of transport. Undoubtedly sea trade declined
over the centuries, with the general decline in the
importance of the county of Norfolk as a centre for
the wool industry. Fishing continued to be a
mainstay of the town, with cod, mackerel and other
longshore catches providing a year round return,
before the move to the crab and lobster
specialisation of today. Tourism began to be of more
importance from the beginning of the 19th century,
and it is from that period that the first written guide
to Cromer dates.

West Cliff: In 2019 the Friends of Cromer Museum were able to purchase a rare stereo photo - though we can't show it in stereo here - taken by Daniel Savin in the 1860s. The bystanders look down towards the jetty which once stood on the seafront. Don't go to lean on the railings!
The end of the Napoleonic wars provided the
opportunity for this influx of visitors. The members of
the Gurney family of Earlham Hall were amongst the
earliest visitors of this sort to the town. The mixture
of sea views and bathing, the woods and walks
behind the town and the activity on the beach
brought those with leisure time and the time to draw
and paint to Cromer, including a number of artists of
the Norwich school.
The coming of the railways and the accompanying
publicity started by the travel writer and theatre critic
Clement Scott - who coined the name Poppyland for
the area - led to a further rush of visitors in the final
decade of the 19th century. Many of those visiting
the town chose to stay, contributing to local
prosperity and building substantial houses. Others
took the opportunity to develop businesses based
on the holiday trade.
The great hotels, few of which remain, date from
this time. 12 |
With the decline of the town after the medieval
period, the church itself had fallen into a
considerable state of disrepair. The Reformation and
the time of Oliver Cromwell's Commonwealth had
also contributed to the deterioration of many church
buildings. The church windows had largely been
bricked up and the chancel demolished. The
Reverend Thomas Gill had resorted to the use of
gunpowder for this purpose in 1681. The restoration
of the church was undertaken in the reign of Queen
Victoria, this work was substantially completed for
the beginning of the 20th century.
Cromer also became known because of its lifeboat
station. Today the offshore lifeboat station is at the
end of the pier, whilst the inshore lifeboat operates
from the beach. In the 19th century, almost every
coastal town or village in Norfolk had its lifeboat.
In the 1920s motor lifeboats began to take over
from the pulling and sailing boats. The building of
the pierhead station at Cromer meant that the
lifeboat could launch in almost any weather, and
Cromer took over responsibility for much of the
coastline to the east, and in particular for the
Haisboro' Sands. The work of Coxswain Henry Blogg
and his crew became known nationally, and has
been continued by his successors led by Henry
'Shrimp' Davies, Richard Davies, Billy Davies and
today's Coxswain, John Davies.
Cromer remains a very popular spot for visitors. Of
course it is not possible to guarantee the sunshine
and warmth of overseas destinations, but the
summer can offer open beaches, country walks,
safe sea bathing and a variety of interesting places
to visit. A sunny weekend winter morning will see
hundreds of people take the walk out on the pier
and a number of other events are held throughout
photographic exhibition. The Museum owns the
largest collection of the negatives taken by this
remarkable north Norfolk - and London-
photographer. An exhibition at the Castle Museum
proved enormously popular over the winter months
and much of it has now transferred to Cromer.
Working in the first half of the twentieth century, she
photographed kings, queens and government
ministers whilst in London - and fishermen and local
residents in Sheringham and in Cromer.
In November 2018 three new plaques were added in
the town, to recall men who had served in the forces
in the First World War. In 2019 another three will be
added, including a plaque for the lady lighthouse
keepers of the 19th century and for suffragette
the year. The Boxing Day swim and the New Year's
Day fireworks now bring thousands to the seafront in
the coldest of weather! Folk on the Pier, usually the
second weekend of May and the Crab and Lobster
festival on the third weekend of May are now well
established attractions. The half term weekend in
October is the time for the COAST arts festival.
The major works on the seafront have all been
completed, though the storm of January 2017 did
cause some damage - and removed a large number
of wooden beach huts again. However, repairs were
quickly done and the promenade made ready for the
spring and summer season. In fact January 2017
proved quite adventurous, with the New Year's Day
fireworks having to be postponed from the 1st to the
8th - but the town was as packed as ever for a
great display.
At Cromer Museum, you can enjoy the Olive Edis
Major Michael Abbs of the Royal Anglian Regiment recalls the sacrifice of the two Hastings brothers at the Second Battle of Gaza
Emily Dickinson who worked in Cromer as a
governess. The third plaque will recognise the work
of Cromer historian and geologist Alfred Savin, who
collected many fossils from the local beaches,
including those he contributed to the Natural History
Museum in London.

and these provide many opportunities to view an

these artists take place in the annual Norfolk and Norwich Open Studios event allowing the public into their studios to see how they work. In the

home to the Pavilion Theatre which offers a wide
range of concerts and productions throughout the
year, including the famous End of the Pier Show.
Folk on the Pier, held in May, is a fantastic
celebration of folk music and is always wellattended.
Cromer has hit the headlines many times - the Alan

Lifeboats
Cromer's All Weather Lifeboat 'Lester' and Inshore Lifeboat 'George and Muriel' on exercise for lifeboat Day 2018. Lifeboat Day is a Sunday at the end of July or beginning of August, depending on the tides.
There are two lifeboats stationed at Cromer.
The ALB (all-weather lifeboat) is at the end of the
pier and is launched down the slipway; it covers up to 100 miles out to sea and along the coast to the
flank stations at Great Yarmouth and Wells. The
ILB (inshore lifeboat) is kept in the renovated 1902
boathouse at the bottom of the Gangway. The ILB
covers inshore services for swimmers and small
boat sailors up to its flank stations at Sheringham
and Happisburgh.
The Cromer lifeboats have a long and distinguished service, with the names Henry Blogg, Henry
'Shrimp' Davies and Richard Davies standing out as long serving coxswains and Lewis 'Tuna' Harrison
and Dr Paul Barclay amongst those we remember
with pride for their years of service afloat and
ashore.
The lifeboat station at the end of the pier can be
visited most of the year. It is normally manned from 10am to 4pm from Easter through to October,
although it is often open at additional times.
Groups wishing to visit should contact the Lifeboat
Visitors Officer by emailing
visitcromerlifeboats@hotmail.co.uk.
The shop at the pier lifeboat station offers a wide
range of presents, including many of specific local interest. The station website at
cromerrnlivisits@gmail.com has a wealth of other
information about the station.
