A very warm welcome It is an honour for me, as Mayor of Cromer, to introduce this town guide and welcome you to our beautiful town. Writing this, just on the cusp of proper ‘bucket and spade’ seaside weather (hopefully…!), Cromer is looking forward to a busy summer and welcoming all of our visitors from both near and far. Cromer has been a very popular destination for holiday makers since the 1880’s with the advent of large hotels and the railway. But as a town on the very edge of the North Norfolk Coast, we are also famous for our fishing, and of course, the Cromer Crab. You can see the world famous Cromer Crab being brought ashore most mornings by the fishermen down by the Gangway and the Henry
We have an award winning traditional Seaside Pier and the Pavilion Theatre which hosts the only end of pier show in Europe. Shows are held here throughout the year. We are very proud that our pier is the National Pier Society, Pier of the Year 2015. From here you can take a walk along our large open Blue Flag beaches, perfect for walking and swimming. The more adventurous can even try surfing or paddle-boarding.

Fernebo Crew The centenary of the First World War brings recollections of the stirring rescue of the crew of the Fernebo in 1917. The lifeboat crew gathered for a photo when Henry Blogg received the RNLI’s Gold Medal for the rescue.

critic Clement Scott - who coined the name Poppyland for the area - led to a further rush of visitors in the final decade of the 19th century. Many of those visiting the town chose to stay, contributing to local prosperity and building substantial houses. Others took the opportunity to develop businesses based on the holiday trade. The great hotels, few of which remain, date from this time.
Cromer also became known because of its lifeboat station. Today the offshore lifeboat station is at the end of the pier, whilst the inshore lifeboat operates from the beach. In the 19th century, almost every coastal town or village in Norfolk had its lifeboat. In the 1920s motor lifeboats began to take over from the pulling and sailing boats. The building of the pierhead station at Cromer meant that the lifeboat could launch in almost any weather, and Cromer

our school has been consistently rated as ‘good’ by Ofsted. The school has a purpose built Nursery which takes babies from eight weeks old to four years and at this point the children transfer over to the main school which admits children in the September preceding their fourth birthday. The Nursery offers five sessions of differing times to suit the needs of our parents, including two three hour sessions, which also includes day care. The Nursery is divided into three rooms for each different age groups; staff have a wealth of experiences and are well qualified. In the main school we have three form entry which means we have nine classrooms, a library and a specialist resource base (SRB) for children who have speech and language difficulties. The SRB supports children within the mainstream community. All teaching areas make the most of new technologies which enhances teaching and learning. The school is set in beautiful grounds with an area for Forest schools, adventure playground and gym trail. There is a football pitch, long jump and shaded areas on our playground. Cromer Junior School Cromer Junior School is a medium sized school for children aged seven to eleven from in and around Cromer. We are currently rated ‘Good’ by Ofsted with Outstanding Behaviour and Safety. Whil de Neve has been Headteacher since 2013. The school has around 260 pupils but expect this to rise to 300 over the coming years. Many of our children start Year 3 after Suffield Park Infant and Nursery School and most of our Year 6 children transfer to Cromer Academy. We are fortunate to have a modern building that is very well equipped as a modern learning environment. The outside area has exciting play areas to keep children busy outside of the classroom. We teach a broad curriculum, enhanced by frequent visitors and visits. Our ASD Base (Autistic Spectrum Disorder Specialist Resource Base) is extremely successful in providing a top quality experience for children that join us from a wide catchment area. We are always very keen to explore opportunities for linking with organisations or individuals within the local community. The Arts in Cromer
Inspirational Art In May, the Crab and Lobster Festival lays out an Art Trail around the town – featuring Ship’s Wheels for 2015. At the end of August, the items are brought together for auction – in 2014 it was model fishing boats.
The North Norfolk coastline has long provided inspiration for artists and photographers who love to immortalise its sweeping beaches and big skies. Cromer itself has become home to a wide range of painters both historically and today. Many Cromer artists open their doors during the annual 'Norfolk Open Studios' event in May, providing a fascinating insight into their working practices. The town also has a number of well-respected
