WELCOME TO

THE FISHER THEATRE The Fisher Theatre team wish you a warm New Year’s welcome, and best wishes for happiness and health in the year ahead. As the festive season slows down and we settle into the routine of work and school etc - a time that often feels dull and ordinary - we have some great shows for you to brighten, inspire and take the edge off the cold, hard return to normality. Not too many choices, but just enough to keep everyone entertained. New to the Fisher this spring we have Exhibition on Screen, which offers beautifully made documentaries with exceptional access to the works of great artists in galleries and collections around the world, and commentary from renowned historians and art critics. The first is on David Hockney, which will certainly brighten up January. We’re very fortunate to have poet John Hegley fronting a Fisher Theatre Fundraiser in January with his inimitable comic style and of course his glasses, we hope. Later in January, for the first time, we have Committed to The Blues Brothers, a band with real soul who guarantee you a night of great music and entertainment. The spectacular Pendragon will be putting on a fine Ceilidh for Burns Night with a delicious meal beforehand, but they won’t be cooking it. Luke Wright, our resident Bungay poet, will be presenting his new show Frankie Vah, which he rehearsed at the Fisher Theatre before taking it to the Norfolk & Norwich and Edinburgh Festivals, so at last he’ll be bringing it home. From one wonder to another The Victorian Conjuror brings a show of magic, comedy and intrigue after a much-enjoyed show here two years ago. In March, The Liberties perform a Dubliners Tribute for a night of song, music, and the craic. Another new fundraising venture called EXPLORE, kicks off with a talk from local celebrity, Stuart Wright, Portrait Artist of renown. In April we have theatre from Hambledon Productions presenting Steptoe & Sons, Gypsy Swing and Jazz from The Remy Harris Trio, a Brontë cabaret from Scary Little Girls, and a murder mystery presented by the agents of suspense, Strange Fascination, ‘Secrets’. Our regular favourites continue into the Spring - Cellar Nights, Cinema+Create, Fisher Arts & Social Club, Poetry Open Mic, The Fisher Theatre Quiz, Fisher Theatre Films, Bungay Film Club and Fisher Folk & Acoustic. There is such variety and quality on offer this spring, and that’s not mentioning the Live streams from the National Theatre, Royal Opera House, Royal Shakespeare Company and the Bolshoi Ballet. Come and enjoy something with us… Laila France, Programming, Events & Marketing Manager & all the Team

There are many ways you can support the Fisher Theatre, a not-for-profit Arts Charity. We are always looking for help and support, as we receive no revenue funding, and are only sometimes considered for capital funding for repairs and improvements.

VOLUNTEERING:

Volunteers are active in helping

in the following areas of ushering, box office, cafe/bar work, prepping, cooking, serving, setting-up events, clearing-up after events, hanging exhibitions, publicity, delivering programmes, putting up posters, helping with mail-outs, technical, administration, book-keeping, running promotional stalls, fundraising, building upkeep and improvements. If you are interested, please email: info@fishertheatre.org. As a volunteer at the Fisher Theatre you receive 10% off the cafe/bar, are invited to regular gatherings and free entrance to FT films when not fully booked.

FISHER THEATRE LOTTERY: When you join, you pay £2 a month, which is set up by standing order. Each month two numbers are drawn, each wins £100.

FISHER STARS: This scheme raises funds for the upkeep, repair and maintenance of the furnishings of the building. You can choose to take a £5/£10/£20 donation a month.

MEMBERSHIP: If you support and give time or money to this arts charity, you may want to play a part in the structure that chooses the Trustees that govern the charity. You can become a member, which then gives you information on the health and prospects of the charity at its yearly AGM, and an opportunity to put yourself forward to be voted in as a Trustee, if you have particular skills and experience that the charity is seeking, or to vote for others who stand as Trustees. In this way you become a part of what steers the Fisher Theatre into the future alongside the support that you give the charity as a volunteer, fundraiser or initiative leader.

LEAVING YOUR MARK: To commemorate fond memories, events, people or a personal connection to the Fisher Theatre, Bronze plaques are available which can be purchased and engraved with your chosen words, and placed on the picture rail in the auditorium for

The largest room within the Theatre offers a maximum seating capacity of 160 and an impressive 240 when all guests/delegates are standing with minimal seating on offer. Unusual for an auditorium are the windows in the roof that flood the space with natural light. These can be blacked out if not required. Added to which are theatre lights that can create added atmosphere to enhance any event from the formality of a conference to an evening party. The floor consists of 60 individual floor panels that can be raised or lowered, to six different heights, allowing you to choose the size of the main stage, seated area, centre stage or even a catwalk. The technical side of the auditorium is controlled from a box above the auditorium at the back, accessed via the gallery. For more information, call us on 01986 897130

Exhibition on Screen presents CÉZANNE - PORTRAITS OF A LIFE From the National Portrait Gallery London, Musée d’Orsay Paris & National Gallery of Art Washington DC

Exhibition on Screen is thrilled to present one of the most talked-about exhibitions of the year. Dedicated to the portrait work of Paul Cézanne, the exhibition opens in Paris before travelling to London and Washington. One cannot appreciate 20th-century art without understanding the significance and genius of Paul Cézanne. Featuring interviews with curators and experts from the National Portrait Gallery, London, MoMA New York, National Gallery of Art Washington, and Musée d’Orsay Paris, and correspondence from the artist himself, the film takes audiences beyond the exhibition to the places where Cézanne lived and worked and sheds light on an artist who is perhaps the least known of all the impressionists – until now. Directed by Phil Grabsky. Running time: 85 minutes. Friedman Productions.

Luke Wright, performance poet presents Frankie Vah Friday 2nd February, doors 7.30pm, Show 8pm • £12/£10 concessions/FFT We all want something to believe in. It’s 1987 and Frankie Vah gorges on love, radical politics, and skuzzy indie stardom. But can he keep it all down? Following the multi-award-winning What I Learned From Johnny Bevan, Luke Wright’s second verse play deals with love, loss, and belief, against a backdrop of skuzzy indie venues and 80s politics. Expect frenetic guitars, visceral verse, and a Morrissey-sized measure of heartache. Written and performed in deft verse by Fringe First & Stage Award for Acting Excellence winner, Luke Wright. “With Frankie Vah, he’s managed to craft a gorgeously worded powerhouse of a play, in one of the only verse dramas that could claim to get a crowd cheering and stamping their feet throughout. Again.” ★★★★★ Broadway Bab

Runtime: 94 mins

Tosca is one of the great evenings of opera, and from its strident opening chords conjures up a world of political instability and menace. Jonathan Kent’s production for The Royal Opera captures the dangerous political turbulence of Rome in 1800. Giacomo Puccini’s dramatic work was a hit with audiences at its 1900 première and it remains one of the most performed of all operas, with its gripping plot and glorious music. Running Time: 3 hours, 2 intervals

'I am all the daughters of my father's house, And all the brothers too.'

11am-1pm followed by Foolhardy Circus Show, 2pm • £5 for workshop & £5 for show.

Twelfth Night is a tale of unrequited love – hilarious and heartbreaking. Two twins are separated in a shipwreck, and forced to fend for themselves in a strange land. The first twin, Viola, falls in love with Orsino, who dotes on OIivia, who falls for Viola but is idolised by Malvolio. Enter Sebastian, who is the spitting image of his twin sister. Christopher Luscombe, Director of the ‘glorious’ (Daily Telegraph) Love’s Labour’s Lost and Much Ado About Nothing (2014 and 2016), returns to the Royal Shakespeare Company to tackle Shakespeare’s greatest comedy, a brilliantly bittersweet account of "the whirligig of time". Running time: 2:10

A fun way for children to spend a morning. They will be playing with traditional circus props including Juggling Balls, Diablo, Tightrope, Devil Sticks, Unicycle, Balance Poles, Pedal Gos and Plate Spinning, in a relaxed semiformal workshop structure. Suitable for ages 6+. After the workshop, the Foolhardy Circus troupe return with their circus skills and comedy acrobatics show. Lots of clowning around, seven-ball juggling, magic and death-defying acrobatics all presented with lashings of happiness. The Fisher Youth Theatre Group’s National Theatre Connections Festival Entry, ‘Ceasefire Babies’ by Fiona Doyle Thursday 22nd, Friday 23rd and Saturday 24th March, 7.30pm • £9/£7 (U18s) The Fisher Youth Theatre Group enters NT Connections Youth Festival for the second time. This year they are taking on a more serious play concerned with the way human behaviour and trauma are passed on. Originally set in Belfast in a deprived area on the edge of a Peace Wall, the play examines how the beliefs and actions of one generation are passed onto their children, regardless of whether the same circumstances are in existence. It is a darkly comic and moving piece that resonates with today’s rise in nationalism and the break-up of the EU. A National Theatre Director will be coming to watch one performance to give feedback to the group.
