Redenhall with Harleston Town Council runs the Harleston Community Leisure Facility based in the Leisure Centre, the town’s market, the allotments, the Recreation Ground and it’s play area and the cemetery in Redenhall

Harleston Safer Neighbourhood Team In addition to the Beat Managers and PCSOs, every Safer Neighbourhood has five teams of Safer Neighbourhood Team (SNT) Patrol officers who will respond to your calls for service 24 hours a day, investigate the crimes in your area and work with the Beat Managers and PCSOs to deliver your local priorities. We are listening to your issues and concerns and working with our partners to improve the quality of life in your neighbourhood. Speak to your local officers by coming to the Station, or contacting us by phone, e-mail & online. Harleston Information Plus (HIP) Harleston Information Plus is an independent charity, based at 8 Exchange Street Harleston. It offers a community hub that is home to a number of valuable services. In 2015 the organisation helped over 6500 people. Harleston Information Plus (HIP) is probably most famous for its community information centre where a friendly, confidential service is offered. Information available includes tourism, benefits, council services, local organisations, events and activities. Why not call in to see if we can help you or alternatively just pop in to browse? On Tuesday afternoons between 2-4pm, 8 Exchange Street opens as a social centre for ‘Stitch and Chatter’. All are welcome including those who just want to chatter! The Clive Hudson room at 8 Exchange Street is home to regular beginners workshops on IT and social media plus one to one computer advice sessions are also available. In 2009 HIP launched its very popular weekly Jobs Club, now held every Wednesday 10am -2pm. The club offers help with CV writing, job search, interview techniques, careers guidance and provides a variety of work skills training courses. HIP is responsible for the Harleston website www.harleston-norfolk.org.uk where you will find a wealth of information about local businesses, community groups and events. A number of organisations offer regular services at the information centre, including Citizen’s Advice, Norfolk Carers Support, the NHS Wellbeing service and Stroke Social Group. Volunteers also organise information sessions covering a variety of subjects such as keeping energy costs low, living with diabetes or digital photography.
The centre’s well equipped rooms suitable for meetings, counselling or workshops, can be rented at very reasonable rates. HIP prides itself on being a service for the community provided by the community, currently 46 volunteers are involved with the charity. New volunteers are always welcome, there are always a number of interesting opportunities. As an independent charity HIP relies on grants and donations to continue its services. Harleston’s History Harleston is an unplanned town, unlike other medieval towns such as Great Yarmouth with its 'rows'. Instead, imagine the original town as being a hollow triangle, formed on the south by Exchange Street and The Magpie, on the east by Broad Street and Old Market Place, and on the west by The Thoroughfare, coming to a point at the northern end where it leads into Redenhall Road. The medieval plots on the outside of this triangle stretched back a long way from relatively narrow frontages and contained small orchards and gardens. The buildings would have had shops at the front with dwellings above. Manufacturing occurred in outhouses and workshops which gradually formed 'yards' - busy, noisy places. Although these yards are still in existence today, they are now mostly residential. Within the triangle would have been booths and stalls of varying degrees of permanence. The only substantial building was St John's Chapel of Ease. Although Sunday attendance at Redenhall Church was a requirement in those days, this chapel was intended to cater for the spiritual needs of local people during the week and those visiting the market. Located alongside the chapel was a tollhouse, there for the purpose of collecting market tolls. This building, which was the White Horse Inn in 1654, now houses 'Sight & Sound'. As years passed, the temporary structures in the centre were gradually replaced by more permanent buildings. By 1839 the town had a fully developed town centre which would have been recognisable by a 21st century time traveller! The opening of the Corn Hall in 1850 and the arrival of the railway in 1855 was indicative of prosperous times, and signalled a sound commercial future for the town.
The decision was made in 1764 for the townsfolk of Harleston to purchase a Manual pump fire engine for the town. The cost amounted to ÂŁ65. 1s. 0d. Originally the order for the purchase through the Sun Fire Office was to Mr Ragg, Engine Maker. Unfortunately by April 1765, Mr Ragg had not supplied the engine and the Sun Fire Office explained that he was under misfortune and in confinement. The Sun Fire agent then recommended Mr John Bristow, an Engine Maker from London, and this was duly delivered by sea from London to Yarmouth on 11th September 1765. In 2016, this engine will undergo restoration and conservation by a qualified conservator. The town is proud of its heritage. For those who want to know more, why not visit the Harleston Museum? Stewarded by enthusiastic volunteers from the Harleston & District Historical Society, the museum is open during limited hours from May to September. Entry is free.

Harleston’s Future Harleston and surrounding communities enjoy a range of events and activities organised by Harleston’s Future, an independent, voluntary Group committed to supporting the Town Council, local businesses and community life. Initiated by the town’s Business Forum, its programmes have been supported by grants from both South Norfolk Council and Town Council. As well as community events, the Group runs a cinema; addresses road safety issues for pedestrians and vehicles; and aims to provide a better home for wildlife. Undoubted highlights of the year are the antiques market and street party in summer, and the Christmas market which between them have attracted thousands of people. Another Group called “FlagForce” has drawn up a programme of colourful flag displays which celebrate special days and national links to other countries (e.g Commonwealth) and enliven the town centre. An important current project is SwiftActionHarleston which plans to improve the fortunes of the town’s swift population by greatly increasing the number of nest sites to provide these magnificent birds with a secure home while they are with us in spring and early summer. Walks
Harleston is close to the River Waveney - the boundary between Norfolk and Suffolk.
Walk 1 - Harleston via Starston. Approx distance of 2.8 miles. Steep gradients.
The walks explore the Norfolk side of the Waveney valley - an ancient landscape comprising a complex network of irregular fields bounded by old hedgerows, remnants of the ancient woods, winding lanes connecting villages, hay meadows and pastures, rivers and wetlands; all now set in modern arable land. There are many routes walkers can take, and further information on many more walks can be found at Harleston Information Plus which is situated in Exchange Street. Here are just three examples of the interesting walks you can take.
This walk starts at the Recreation Ground, turning onto Wilderness Lane, Starston Road and then down Bunn's Lane (off the B1134 Starston Road). If you turn right at the end of Bunn's Lane and follow the hill down The Street, you will see St Margaret's Church ahead. If you don't wish to visit the church, turn right past the village hall, and at the end of the pavement turn right onto the public footpath just after passing The Rectory. Ignore the track on the left but keep right on the grass path up the steep hill, go around the corner and continue with the hedge on your right. Cross the dismantled railway line, then the bridge over the ditch and continue beside another field up the hill to Bunn's Lane, cross the road and you will be back on Starston Road, where you can either make your way back to the Recreation Ground or go through Weavers Croft, passing Herolf Way and Pilgrims Way, on to Swan Lane and then onto the main street, The Thoroughfare.

Walk 3 - Harleston via Redenhall. Approx distance of 4 miles. Steep gradients.
The start point is at St John the Baptist, Broad Street. With your back to the church, turn right along Broad Street. Keep right and walk along Redenhall Road out of Harleston towards Redenhall, past the poplar trees and turn left down the hill to Lushbush. Turn left at the T-junction, cross the bridge over the stream and turn right on the public footpath up the hill. Walk up this field edge path keeping the trees on your right. Turn right on reaching the road and, after a short distance, turn left onto the public footpath just after, and adjacent to, the drive to a house.
The start point is St John the Baptist, Broad Street. With your back to the church, turn right and walk along Broad Street, then Redenhall Road, and continue for approximately one mile to the roundabout.
Walk on this wide grass field margin towards and then beside Gawdy Hall Wood. After a short distance turn right at the way marker post to cross the field over the hill down to the road, emerging opposite the junction. Turn right at the road (Church Lane), look out for the wooden memorial to a World War One plane crash on the right just before Church Lane Cottages. Turn first right and follow the road over the hill, continue ahead at the crossroads. Bear left at the junction and walk up Station Hill and continue along Station Road. Turn right at the end, cross where possible and return to the start point. This walk passes close to Gawdy Hall Big Wood, an undisturbed Site of Special Scientific Interest. Whilst there is no public access, the footpath is adjacent to it for a short distance and the large wood is visible from any of the country roads all around.
Cross at the roundabout and walk up to St Mary's Church. After visiting the church, return to the road and continue over the brow of the hill. Turn right into Cook's Lane. Continue along Cook's Lane turning left at the junction to walk down Cuckoo Lane, a very steep hill. Turn right at the T-junction onto Low Road. Turn right at the public footpath finger post just after Freston Farm and Freston House and walk up the steep hill (part of Angles Way). At the junction of footpaths, at the brow of the hill, continue ahead (by turning right then immediately left at the second way marker post) and keep the ditch on your left. Just before a small wood on your left, turn right to walk down to the road. Turn left into Green Lane, cross the A143 at the crossing point and continue as Green Lane becomes Jay's Green. As the road bears sharp right, continue ahead onto Straight Lane, turning left at the end to return to the start point at the church. Harleston and District Business Forum Harleston and District Business Forum, founded in May 2012, was set up to promote business in Harleston and the surrounding area and to give business a collective voice on local issues. Its members meet for a monthly breakfast meeting where previous guest speakers have included an MP, social media guru to a model maker for the film industry. The Forum organises group visits, for example to Sizewell Nuclear Power Station and a trip to the Houses of Parliament is planned for 2016.
