Welcome to
After six years of planning, fundraising, consultation and hard work by many people this amazing new facility for Wells is actually happening. By the time you are reading this the Tourist Information Centre building will have been demolished and the contractor RobSon Construction Ltd will be setting up the site at the start of a year long programme of works. Unfortunately and inevitably we will all have to go through some pain over the next year while such a central site in the town is transformed. The Maltings Trust apologises for the inconvenience this will cause. At the end of the construction period the car park will be reinstated with the loss of only one parking space. The contractor is preparing a traffic management plan and once on site will liaise with local businesses and residents to ensure everyone has the access they need as smoothly as possible. Construction began with work to the roof of the existing Maltings and external repairs. Work will then continue with the construction of the new extension and remodelling of the inside of the Maltings. A closure of the northern end of Staithe Street will be needed in the autumn to install all the new services to the building. Visit www.wellsmaltings.org.uk to see the latest site progress via our new live webcam. While the work is going on the Sackhouse will continue to function, hosting a number of local businesses in the offices and events, classes and performances in the community room. There will, however, be no on site parking and only pedestrian access. The Trust will also continue to run the Tourist Information Service from our interim 14 Freeman Street address where a range of local history books, maps and souvenirs are available to buy.

MAY Saturday 6th May, 7.30pm - A Night of Comedy Presented by Friends of the Granary at The Sackhouse Tickets: Adult £10, Child £5, Snr. Citizen £9 (Over 65s), Student £5 and Friends of the Granary £8.00 (FOG card to be produced before show) Alan Seaman loves to tour with the best of rising comedy. He came to the Sackhouse twice in 2016 with two different up and coming young comedians which proved to be hilarious evenings. This show promises to be just as good. Alan, an experienced hand at getting the night going, introduced us to Patrick Monahan several years ago.
Monday 8th May, 7pm - Julieta (15) Spain 2016 Presented by Screen Next the Sea at Alderman Peel High School, Market Lane, Wells NR23 1RB Tickets: £5 Loosely based on three Alice Munroe short stories seen through Spanish Director Almodovar’s eyes. A chance encounter causes a woman (Emma Suarez) to reflect on the tragic circumstances surrounding the disappearance of her daughter. “Told in flashback over 30 years of guilt and grief, this tender melodrama is the directors best film in a decade.” Mark Kermode The Guardian. Directed by Pedro Almodovar and starring Adriana Ugarte, Emma Suarez and Daniel Grao. Foreign language with subtitles. 99 mins.
Saturday 13th May, 7.30pm - Winter Wilson Presented by Friends of the Granary at The Sackhouse Tickets: Adult £10, Child £5, Snr. Citizen £9 (Over 65s), Student £5 and Friends of the Granary £8.00 (FOG card to be produced before show) Winter Wilson’s current tour showcases their latest album “Ashes and Dust”, the follow up to “Cutting Free” which made the Daily Telegraph’s ten recommended folk albums for Summer 2014. Having honed their craft during many years as semi-professional musicians, the duo went full time in 2012 and haven’t looked back since. They have a fine repertoire of self-penned songs, telling stories of everyday life which often reflect the bigger picture of this life we lead. (“Songs for local heroes,” as one punter said.) Kip Winter (vocals, accordion, guitar, flute) is one of the finest singers on the circuit, expressing power and emotion in equal measure “from melting to belting”. Dave Wilson (vocals, guitar and banjo) is amongst the top tier of British song writers, with his songs covered by some of folk’s “greats”. But it’s in live performance that Winter Wilson really excel, bringing a sense of intimacy to every stage, welcoming audiences into their world, mixing songs with stories of life on the road. Tight harmonies, killer songs and a lot of fun – that’s Winter Wilson.

They combine both traditional and contemporary folk with jazz and other styles in their beautiful compositions and striking arrangements. Using this as a platform she has since reached audiences never previously thought possible. The self penned song Cry, won the Oldies Composers Competition, judged by BBC Radio 2 presenters including Ken Bruce, Bob Harris, Johnny Walker and the late Sir Terry Wogan, resulting in Anthony Head singing the song live on ITVs This Morning, and gaining airplay on numerous radio stations including the BBC. She has had success with radio play on BBC6 Music Little Black Cloud and The Moon, both of which were selected for the Tom Robinson Mixtape via 'Fresh On The Net'.

BIRDS/BOATS OF THE SALTMARSH COAST The series on Birds of the Saltmarsh Coast began with an Introduction to the Birds of the Saltmarsh Coast by Andy Bloomfield (Warden, Holkham NNR). In February, author and journalist Dick Girling chaired a panel made up of Bernard Bishop (former Warden of the NWT Cley Reserve), Andy Clements (Director, British Trust for Ornithology) and Sarah Henderson (Head Warden, Holkham NNR), on Bird Conservation on the Saltmarsh Coast. In March, Kevin Thatcher gave a detailed talk on Wild fowling.
On May 18th the final session in the series is entitled Bird Painting. This event will take place at the Holkham Victoria rather than The Sackhouse. It will feature a lunchtime discussion on bird painting on the Saltmarsh Coast led by highly knowledgeable and nationally known artists with long and distinguished records of bird painting in one of the world's prime areas for wildlife art. A selection of bird paintings by Wells artist Frank Southgate (1872-1916) will be on display. Further details will be published before the end of April We want to urge those who participated in these meetings and others who may be interested but have not previously done so to visit one or more of the coastal reserves. The objectives of the 'Boats' series will be to share local knowledge of the ships and boats that have been integral parts of life, work and play on the Saltmarsh Coast for more than a thousand years. It will focus on the design, technologies, construction, use and preservation of fishing boats, lifeboats, warships, freighters, revenue cutters, yachts, dinghies and muck-boats that have tied the northern edge of Norfolk to the rest of the world. It will tell the stories of when, where and with what materials they were built and maintained; where they went; who sailed them; and how they reflected the peculiar character of this coastline and its people. It will inform and entertain residents and visitors of all ages who want to learn more about a rich maritime past and understand the issues that will shape its maritime future.
