Welcome to
Sackhouse THE
The next phase of the construction project has begun. After the many months of fundraising and detailed design, we are in the final stages of mobilising ready for the main build. As you read this the TIC building on Staithe Street will either be dismantled or about to be! We are in the process of signing the contract with the builder who will carry out the renovation of the Maltings and building of the new extension. Our programme sees the construction work beginning in February 2017 and culminating with the new facility opening in Spring 2018. During this time, car parking by the Maltings will be restricted as the majority of the Staithe Street pay and display car park as well as the Maltings private car park will be used for the construction area compound. We will be working closely with the builders to look at the detail of the planned work and keep local residents and businesses informed – in particular of any periods when the work will be especially noisy or when access to areas of the Street are unavailable during deliveries of materials or overhead work. We hope that everyone bears with us during a period of inevitable disruption and looks forward with us to the opening of an amazing new facility for Wells. Thanks to those of you who have helped contribute to the shaping of the new Heritage and Learning Centre using some fantastic content and stories compiled by local volunteers, interpretation design specialists Ugly Studios have created new concepts that will help to create a vibrant, interactive heritage space and visitor attraction. There are loads of exciting events to get involved with - we hope you will join us.

JANUARY Tuesday 3rd January, 7pm - CABARET (15) USA 1972 Presented by Screen Next The Sea at Alderman Peel High School, NR23 1RB Tickets: £5 THIS SEASON’S CLASSIC FILM. It is 1931, the city is Berlin and the Weimar Republic is in its dying days as the Nazi Party is rising to power. Loosely based on Christopher Isherwood’s 1939 short stories Goodbye to Berlin and the ensuing play “I Am A Camera”, the character of Sally Bowles is played by Liza Minelli, a cabaret performer at the “divinely decadent” run down Kit Kat Club, itself a grotesque mirror image of contemporary German society. We follow her life and loves, mainly with Brian (Michael York), an English academic, alongside the life of the Kit Kat Club, with its mesmerising Master of Ceremonies (Joel Grey). Accurately portraying the period, the satirical songs and outstanding choreography Cabaret won 8 Oscars, including Best Actress, and its inclusion in Wikipedia’s All Time Best Musicals. Directed by Bob Fosse and starring Liza Minelli Michael York Joel Grey and Helmut Griem. 123 minutes.

JANUARY/FEBRUARY Tuesday 31st January, 7.15pm - Verdi's Il Trovatore - LIVE from ROH Presented by Screen Next The Sea at Alderman Peel High School, NR23 1RB Tickets: Adult £12.50, Child £6.25 Il Trovatore is one of the great operas of the Romantic period, a story of passion and blood, love and vengeance, disaster and murder. New in the 2015/16 Season, this atmospheric and poetic staging by director David Bösch puts the story of passion against the backdrop of war. Fire and snow in the landscape echo the cruelty and love of the story: soldiers and gypsies clash, a mother reveals a terrible secret and two men are engaged in a deadly fight for one woman. The famous Anvil Chorus is just one of the highlights of Verdi’s exceptionally fine music, which captures the shifting emotions of the drama through impassioned love duets, fiery solos and stirring choruses. International superstars Dmitri Hvorostovsky, Anita Rachvelishvili, Lianna Haroutounian and Gregory Kunde lead a superb cast of world-class singers in this Verdi classic. Conducted by Richard Farnes .

He exhibited several times at the Royal Academy with the New English Art Club and the Royal Society of British Artists and had several one man and mixed exhibitions.

Monday 24th April, 7pm - A UNITED KINGDOM (12A) UK/USA 2016 Presented by Screen Next The Sea at Alderman Peel High School, NR23 1RB Tickets: Adult £5, Child £3.50 This film reminds us of a long-forgotten chapter of British history; a tale of imperialism and hypocrisy, class and racial prejudice in post-war Britain. South Africa had introduced apartheid and its neighbour Bechuanaland (now Botswana) had sent its Prince Seretse Khama (Oyelowo) to study law in London. There he met, fell in love with and married a white office worker called Ruth Williams (Pike). At that time, Britain was actively supporting its Commonwealth member’s apartheid regime; Bechuanaland was a British protectorate. This inter-racial marriage was fiercely opposed both by their own families and by the governments of the countries involved. The chemistry between the couple on screen, while decorous and of its time is totally convincing and moving.
Wednesday, 26th April, 7.30pm. Burton - A Tribute to Richard Burton In the Sackhouse Tickets: Full £10, Concessions £9, Friends of the Granary £8, Students £5 Rhodri Miles takes on the role of the younger Burton. ‘Burton’ vividly presents the life of the great Welsh actor in his own words from humble beginnings to Hollywood mega-stardom.Beautiful women (not least Liz Taylor), alcohol, wealth, stage and screen are the threads woven into this sad, happy, exuberant often hilarious one-man show. Drink was the only real anodyne to his deteriorating health and mental state, his doomed tempestuous relationship with Taylor and his constant guilt over the abandonment of his family. Rhodri Miles (Game of Thrones, Eastern Promises, Atlantis) takes on the role of the younger Burton and received critical acclaim at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in 2009 and also Hollywood fringe festival 2010 where the play won 'Best International' show.
