By Johnny McKnight.
Mizzis Horrocks’ class of seven year olds is about to perform their nativity play at Flint Street Primary School for the proud mums and dads. Squabbles arise when Gabriel wants to play Mary, the Star grumbles he’s not a proper star like they have at NASA, Herod won’t stop waving to his mum and dad and the subversive Innkeeper is determined to liven up the traditional script. And then the stick insect escapes...
Directed by Robert Softley Gale & Johnny McKnight The creative forces of Birds of Paradise & Random Accomplice come together for the first time to bring you a frank and hilarious sex comedy - Wendy Hoose. Laura and Jake just want sex. Late Friday night drunken sex. Nothing more. No strings attached. But getting your leg over is sometimes more difficult than you think. Wendy Hoose is about two twenty year olds searching for love in all the wrong places! The production contains strong language and scenes of a sexual nature. In the comedic style of the production, Wendy Hoose includes audio description, BSL and animated surtitles. “Rude, ribald, hilariously off colour” – The Guardian. “Painfully funny” – The Herald.
Greenock Players present this warm, witty, funny play about children for grown-ups where adults play the children. Written by Tim Firth who also wrote Calendar Girls, performed by the Players in 2012. Original lyrics are set to the tunes of the usual Christmas carols.

7:30pm £5.00 Studio During the late ‘80s /early ‘90s The Garlands existed as one of Scotland’s coolest and best kept musical secrets. An energetic guitar driven four piece resplendent in kaleidoscope shirts the band stormed onto the live London music circuit, gathering many followers and admirers along the way. With the dawn of Madchester, rave music and the baggy generation of the early 1990s the band quit London and returned to Scotland, eventually putting The Garlands as a project on ice.... 2014 sees the long-awaited return of the original four piece featuring Alec Galloway, Craig Weir, Stephen Power and Brian Sinclair. The band is currently recording a new album and will be playing live across the country.
£10.00/£8.00 Studio In 1951 Henrietta Lacks walked into the coloured section of the John Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore with a pain in her abdomen. A biopsy revealed a cancer that would kill her just months later. A cell sample taken without her permission was used as the raw material for some of the most important scientific discoveries of the past 100 years. Against a backdrop that charts the scientific milestones of the HeLa cell line; this production seeks to bring Henrietta Lacks back to life, using testimony from her family members, the scientific community and the doctors that treated her. HeLa is an engaging exploration of the vast scientific progress made possible by the cells of one unknown woman.
Following a successful appearance alongside Kevin McDermott in July 2014 the band return to The Beacon under their own steam on Saturday 27th September. Miss ‘em and weep!

Once again the Capitol Big Band is back at the Beacon Arts Centre after last year’s successful event.
Directed by Corinne Harris
By Craig Ryder and the original Whingeing Women “Grumpy Old Women” meets “Mums the Word” meets “The Vagina Monologues” meets “Calendar Girls” and even “50 Shades” in this hilarious new production.
This acoustic event is open to all (first come first served basis, subject to programme capacity) who register by Monday 22nd September via email to info@beaconartscentre.co.uk with the subject matter “Folk & Roots Sunday Session”, giving name, solo act or group (number of people) and contact details.
The Capitol Big Band – It Might as Well Be Swing Thursday 2nd October 2014 7:30pm
This year’s concert is titled “It Might As Well Be Swing”, taken from the Count Basie/Frank Sinatra album of the sixties. The band will emulate the sound of the great swing bands of that era namely Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Woody Herman etc. Featuring the vocal talents of Big Band regulars, Heather Whiteford and Tommy Reid with their own tribute to the Great Swing Time era.
Friday 3rd October 2014 7:30pm
Meet six hypothetical passengers on Pan Am Flight 103 on 21 December 1988 before and after the plane explodes over Lockerbie. A mother and her stepdaughter argue about the roots of injustice; a retired couple clash over family versus personal dreams; and a US intelligence agent tries to convince a Scottish journalist to risk her life for the “scoop of the century.” With humour, love and courage, they challenge each other to either accept the unacceptable or take a stand for their personal truth. After the explosion, they speak from the neutrality of death, witnessing and questioning events as they unfold on the ground. “a triumphant tale of love and loss… A truly stunning piece of theatre.” – 5/5 Three Weeks.
Whingeing Women is a no-holds-barred exposé of the modern British woman – with frank, funny, moving and risqué commentaries on their trials, tribulations and taboos about life, love, death and even sex. Real women, real stories, and real laughter – this celebration of womanhood proves that laughter really is the best medicine, and is also the perfect girls’ night out.
As part of The Session, Celtic Music Radio will select an act to be awarded a support slot to Gaberlunzie at the festival’s closing show on Saturday 15th November. Advanced booking for audience required.
Four inspirational women take to the stage to share the best (and the worst) stories that come from being blessed with XX chromosomes! Starring Gail Porter, with further names to be announced.

STARRING BAD GIRLS AND EMMERDALE ACTRESS - NICOLE FARADAY. Over the Rainbow is a compelling award-winning musical, which tells the life story of this legendary artist, following Eva’s life through dramatic scenes and stunning live renditions of her music including a haunting interpretation of ‘Somewhere over the Rainbow.’ This award winning show has received plaudits from the Eva Cassidy Band and members of her family. The show contains projection and original footage from Eva Cassidy’s life, from an early age to her first professional gig aged 18, her first meeting with her boyfriend and mentor Chris Biondo, a rabblerousing rendition and recording at Blues Alley with Chuck Brown and culminating in her poignant and tragic death.
Remembering the Legends of Soul, “Forgotten Man” recalls the great songs and singers of the past. Including classics from Marvin Gaye, Luther Vandross, Sam Cooke, Freddie Scott, Al Green and many more. “Brilliant” – Sir Tom Jones.
Roy Chubby Brown returns with his meatiest show yet! ‘Who Ate All The Pies?’ He’s still rude, he’s still crude and this time he’s turning headlines into punch lines as his rip-roaring brand of banter continues to burst bellies across the country. Chubby doesn’t hold back from sharing his outlandish views on news, women and gender, sailing so close to the mark, even the most seasoned of fans will be left gob-smacked! As politically incorrect as ever ‘The World’s Most Outrageous Comedian’ is far too rude for TV, so this live performance is the only place to catch the flamboyant comedian! If easily offended please stay away!
Celebrity cast to be announced.

Also including a taste of the some of the greatest movies and musical numbers of all time. All beautifully choreographed along with stunning costumes. Performed by four world-class singers and featuring the brilliant ‘Memory Lane’ dancers. Don’t miss one of the biggest nostalgia shows in the UK.
Alastair’s sell-out record Beacon Studio Theatre audience of 156 people at last year’s Festival found an entertainer in top form. Indeed, many observed that Alastair is putting on stronger performances now than at any part of his career - quite an accolade for a true international legend of the Scottish folk scene!
Strict rules, extreme conditions and ferocious competition. The Dance Marathons of Depression-era America were the reality shows of their day. Attracting huge audiences, they could last for weeks, with competitors stopping for only 10 minutes every 2 hours to change their clothes or sleep, and eating while they danced. 10 dancers, two actors and a six-piece jazz ensemble bring this drama to life to a soundtrack of songs from the 1930s, performed by soprano Nadine Livingston. Company Chordelia Artistic Director Kally Lloyd-Jones directs and Kennedy Aitchison leads the band.
Yvonne Lyon
Alastair’s youthful exuberance and enthusiasm for the music and his commitment to entertain inspired an uplifting, humorous, thought-provoking, and participative evening for last year’s audience. His repertoire can take you from a Scottish historical ballad to a music hall ditty to a Gaelic lament to a vibrant American Gospel song, each delivered in his inimitable warm style. With that sell-out crowd last year, don’t wait too long to get your tickets!

A five piece Celtic folk rock, multi-instrumental band from Dundee who, as announced on STV in March this year, have been signed by American label Premier Records. The band is readying themselves for a US tour, so catch them here while you still can!
Audiences from Celtic Connections to the Cambridge Folk Festival to the National Folk Festival of Australia have been treated to one of Scottish music’s most distinctively sublime voices – it’s about time Inverclyde got to see Emily Smith first hand.
The band has gone from strength to strength with the Summer of 2012 seeing Amber Road open the main stage at the Tiree Music Festival, an earlier proudly cherished milestone on their journey so far. They pride themselves on writing “songs and tunes that come straight from the heart, with deep and stirring lyrics”.
You’ll have seen her featuring in many TV shows including the Transatlantic Sessions, Hogmanay Live, and being part of the 2013 tour of the Transatlantic Sessions. Her 5th CD release, “Echoes” heralded a bold new phase in Emily’s music and with it comes what she describes as “a new Scottish sound”.

Theatre Fresh from the success of “Singin’ in the Rain”, Greenock Light Opera Club brings you THE PRODUCERS. The show is the story of a down-onhis- luck show producer and his neurotic accountant who hatch a plan to make money by putting on a show that will flop. In true showbiz style they pull together lots of colourful characters in their attempt to ruin the show. But it doesn’t quite go as planned… The show has wowed on Broadway and the West End and has won 12 Tony awards. Whilst the hilarious and outrageous story may not be quite politically correct by today’s standards, it will have them rolling in the aisles. With the script by Mel Brooks and Thomas Meehan and lyrics and music by Mel Brooks this show is sure to be popular. Due to some of the content, we suggest this show is suitable for mid-teens upwards. Robin Watson and Gordon Menzies have been performing as Gaberlunzie for 40 years, recording 25 albums and 3 videos over that period in addition to their countless gigs and TV and radio performances throughout the UK, Europe, the Middle East, Canada and America. Their songs span the breadth of Scottish culture, many of which are deeply ingrained into the psyche of the nation, as they sing about its beauty, its history, its land, its villages, its characters, its idiosyncrasies and its lore. Every self-respecting Scottish folk music collection should have at least one Gaberlunzie album in it! A fitting act to close Inverclyde’s Scottish Folk & Roots Festival 2014.

Our Bistro offers a day-round menu of delicious locally-sourced food; a well-stocked bar of drinks and cocktails; and offers catering services to support functions. These activities generate additional income which underpins our charitable purposes in developing young disadvantaged people from the local area; working with people with mental health problems; along with our primary focus on bringing arts to Inverclyde’s communities. The Beacon is the result of a vision, and the huge efforts of a group of Inverclyde people who have worked tirelessly to bring the vision to life. Now we need your help to continue to develop their vision – becoming more than just a beautiful building by offering wider community-based events and activities across Inverclyde. Bringing the arts to everyone!

It may be best to telephone 01475 723723 or email info@beaconartscentre.co.uk in advance of your visit to organise any additional access requirements.
We are very grateful for the support we receive from our audiences, volunteers, patrons, donor’s key funders, charitable trusts and sponsors. Your ongoing support allows the Beacon to continue being a vibrant, active theatre, bursting at the seams with creative energy.
