welcome When The Beacon’s doors opened for the first time in January 2013 no one knew what to expect. We hoped for a lively atmosphere with lots of first time patrons joining the many loyal supporters of the Arts Guild in enjoying the lovely new facilities; the new Bistro service, a larger and more comfortable Theatre, an accessible and flexible Studio, and a performance programme offering more shows from a broader range of quality companies. In our Preview Season 18,000 people have been to 54 shows, 56,000 have dined in our Bistro, there have been 227 social and business events and 5,500 people took part in a new range of activities offered for all ages. In August at Youth on the Quay, at The Gala Event and at First Beam of Light we celebrated the official opening of this fantastic new facility, with more than 3,000 local participants. Our experience of the Preview Season with a large increase in people using their local art centre, attending performances and events, and taking part in new activities tells us very clearly what to expect: that The Beacon will realise the vision of its huge potential to make Inverclyde a better place to live, to work and to visit. Be part of that vision by reading on to find a wealth of shows to entertain you through to 2014 with the extra special treats of the star studded, family pantomime Jack and the Beanstalk and a Hogmanay performance and ceilidh to end the year in style. the beacon is a ve The Beacon Arts Centre, opened in January 2013, is one of the finest new arts venues in the UK. The Beacon is the replacement for the Greenock Arts Guild Theatre which has served the community of Inverclyde well, for 65 years. The Beacon is situated at Custom House Quay in Greenock and overlooks the River Clyde estuary towards the hills of Argyll and Dunbartonshire. There can be few theatres in the country which enjoy such a spectacular location. The Beacon is a significant new addition to the Scottish theatre and arts scene and is a venue of choice for touring productions as well as being a vibrant hub for the local community theatre groups.

In developing the concept for The Beacon our research identified two areas of outstanding social need locally that we wish to address; young people at risk of social exclusion and people with a history of mental health problems. The Beacon Bistro engages, as part of its team, people who have a history of mental health problems which have excluded them from the workplace. The income generated from the Bistro is reinvested into our youth theatre and education outreach activities which work deep within the communities of Inverclyde

In 2002, Joe went on a gap year trip to Uganda, to visit an aunt who was working for a charity. Amidst the six week blur of safaris, white-water rafting and orphanages, Joe made friends with Ronnie....Ronnie was 16, Joe was 18. They were both the eldest sons of large families. They both supported Manchester United. Six months later, back in Manchester, Joe got a text:

Director Chris Rolls and designer Oliver Townsend use their extensive theatrical expertise to capture the drama, and the elegance, of one of Handel’s most successful operas. Against a backdrop of faded Baroque grandeur, a cast of very contemporary characters tells a compelling tale of tyranny, love and the corrupting nature of power. Bertarido, King of Lombardy, has been defeated in battle and his enemy Grimoaldo has seized his throne. Bertarido’s queen, Rodelinda, mourns bitterly, little knowing that her husband is feigning death in order to exact revenge. Alone in a world of ruthless Machiavellian intrigue, where every wall has ears, she agrees to marry Grimoaldo. Distraught, Bertarido dismisses her as faithless, but allegiances change in the flick of a knife, and nothing is ever quite what it seems. Touring 16 of Scotland’s smaller venues in Autumn 2013, Rodelinda is accompanied by three instrumentalists – on harpsichord, violin and cello.

Helen Alving is trapped in a world where the ‘dead ideas’ preached by Pastor Manders rule outright, and her own family’s insidious legacy threatens scandal. She is desperately trying to conceal her husband’s philandering past by building an orphanage in his name, under the pastor’s guiding hand. But the celebrated return of her estranged son Oswald brings Helen’s ghosts back to haunt her, and all hopes of success are reduced to ashes.

It’s the year 2013, 50 years since the first Hillman Imp motor car was produced at Linwood near Paisley, with the prospect of 9,000 jobs. Plays and books have been written on the subject and documentaries are being shown to celebrate the Imp’s achievements. But it no longer exists. The jobs redundant. Linwood is no more. A barren wasteland. The irony of the 50th birthday celebrations awaken the memories of a local, homeless, alcoholic who looks back fondly to happier times as a worker at the factory in 1965, only to face demons of two major events that changed his life for ever. The story is told with warmth and humour. Linwood no more is a one hour play for one actor - using images and film of the Linwood story, from 1963 to the present day.

The Scottish soldier is inextricably linked with the imagery of pipes and drums, with a long tradition of marching with a military band; as early as 1763 there is mention of a band of music in the 1st or Royal Regiment of Foot. The role of the Band of The Royal Regiment of Scotland is to support the Army and the State and all ceremonial occasions that occur in Edinburgh and beyond. The Royal Regiment of Scotland Band will hold a concert at the Beacon Arts Centre on 4th October 2013. It is a charity concert with proceeds going to Scottish Fire and Rescue Service Heritage Trust, a registered Scottish Charity, a donation from the proceeds will also go to the Soldiers Charity.

Set in World War II, it is a story of courage, a story of survival and a story of enduring friendship. On Friday 13 September 1940, a ship, The City of Benares, set sail from Liverpool for Canada. On board were 90 evacuees escaping the relentless bombing and dangers of war torn Britain. Four days into the crossing, the ship was torpedoed and sank. Only eleven of the evacuees survived. Two fifteen year old girls, Bess Walder and Beth Cumming, spent 19 terrifying hours in the water on an upturned lifeboat. They willed each other to survive. Lifeboat tells their story.

Rusty Boat Theatre Company is for young people in Inverclyde, based in Port Glasgow. Rusty Boat specialise in making theatre using a range of different art forms and techniques.

Vivaldi’s fabulous programmatic concertos depicting the Four Seasons are offset by one of his splendid operatic sinfonias and two virtuosic concertos; one for 2 violins and then the great Grosso Mogul concerto for violin and orchestra. La Serenissima are no stranger to Scotland and were the first ensemble to perform and record the recently discovered flute concerto that was found in Edinburgh. La Serenissima’s latest recording has recently been featured as CD of the Week on Classic FM, as well as appearing as CD of the Week in the Daily Telegraph and CD of the Month in the BBC Music Magazine. Adagietto is a Graham-based solo by the godfather of UK modern dance Bob Cohan. It tells the story of the betrayal of Saint Sebastian. Spitfire was the first hit by the world renowned choreographer Matthew Bourne. It places Perrot’s famous pas de quatre in the world of men’s underwear advertising and mail order catalogues. Tanja Liedtke’s quirky and athletic tribute to ‘Les Sylphides’, Imploded - Une Reverie Romatique has the dancers decked out in retro sports kit whilst assuming the attributes of mischievous sylphs in the moonlight. Finally, seminal choreographer Cathy Marston (BERN:Ballett) will present a new commission inspired by ‘that Scottish play’ - Shakespeare’s Macbeth. Refraining from approaching the entire plot, Marston is inspired by the ‘sleepwalking scene’.

access to the wheelchair access Wheelchair access is available throughout the building, There are 5 dedicated wheelchair spaces in the stalls of our main theatre and a further 4 wheelchair spaces in the circle.. We have 6 wheelchair spaces available in our studio. To ensure availability, early booking is strongly recommended.

induction loop Induction loop systems are provided. Please ask our Box Office staff to advise you on the best seats to book, to optimise the hearing benefits from this system.

The beacon is just off the A8 behind Greenock Police Station. Turn into Brymner Street at the Police Station and then turn right into Customhouse Place. The Beacon is situated at the end of the road to the right of the Custom House.
parking There are 8 disabled parking bays in front of the building, these are for blue badge permit holders only. For non-permit holders parking is on street, in and around Custom House Quay and Victoria Harbour.
