welcome When The Beacon’s doors opened for the first time in January 2013 no one knew what to expect. We hoped for a lively atmosphere with lots of first time patrons joining the many loyal supporters of the Arts Guild in enjoying the lovely new facilities; the new Bistro service, a larger and more comfortable Theatre, an accessible and flexible Studio, and a performance programme offering more shows from a broader range of quality companies. In our Preview Season 18,000 people have been to 54 shows, 56,000 have dined in our Bistro, there have been 227 social and business events and 5,500 people took part in a new range of activities offered for all ages. In August at Youth on the Quay, at The Gala Event and at First Beam of Light we celebrated the official opening of this fantastic new facility, with more than 3,000 local participants. Our experience of the Preview Season with a large increase in people using their local art centre, attending performances and events, and taking part in new activities tells us very clearly what to expect: that The Beacon will realise the vision of its huge potential to make Inverclyde a better place to live, to work and to visit. Be part of that vision by reading on to find a wealth of shows to entertain you through to 2014 with the extra special treats of the star studded, family pantomime Jack and the Beanstalk and a Hogmanay performance and ceilidh to end the year in style. All of us here at The Beacon look forward to welcoming you during the coming season and whatever your expectations I’m sure you’ll find lots here that you, your friends and your family are all sure to enjoy. the beacon is a ve The Beacon Arts Centre, opened in January 2013, is one of the finest new arts venues in the UK. The Beacon is the replacement for the Greenock Arts Guild Theatre which has served the community of Inverclyde well, for 65 years. The Beacon is situated at Custom House Quay in Greenock and overlooks the River Clyde estuary towards the hills of Argyll and Dunbartonshire. There can be few theatres in the country which enjoy such a spectacular location. The Beacon is a significant new addition to the Scottish theatre and arts scene and is a venue of choice for touring productions as well as being a vibrant hub for the local community theatre groups.

doing something extraordinary

The Beacon’s mission is to be a landmark resource for cultural life in Scotland, a unique hub for the arts in which to be entertained by an inspiring range of events. It will enhance the enjoyment and cultural experience of all who use it, helping make Inverclyde a more attractive place to live, to establish a business and to visit.

4

the beacon what’s on guide

To fulfil this mission we aim to • Present a broad, high quality artistic programme • Help develop middle-scale touring throughout Scotland • Be a key part of Scotland’s arts and culture infrastructure • Deliver a significant outreach activity programme • House and support existing or new arts education activity • Be a social hub • Provide local community and amateur groups with the highest quality platform • Support local artists and attract new ones • Be a centre for learning

enriching people’s lives

In developing the concept for The Beacon our research identified two areas of outstanding social need locally that we wish to address; young people at risk of social exclusion and people with a history of mental health problems. The Beacon Bistro engages, as part of its team, people who have a history of mental health problems which have excluded them from the workplace. The income generated from the Bistro is reinvested into our youth theatre and education outreach activities which work deep within the communities of Inverclyde

very special place where young people are at high risk of social exclusion. We aim to introduce a rolling programme which will allow excluded adults and young people to engage in all the areas of our arts activities.

be part of it

We are now appealing to you, our audience to make a contribution, large or small, to our Stage & Light Appeal and to help us raise the final £100,000 required to equip The Beacon. Your contribution is vital to help us: • Welcome the best productions by national companies • Enable us to promote community performances at a reasonable cost • Save from expensive equipment hire • Keep our ticket prices at affordable levels for all • Ensure that we can offer more performances to our Inverclyde audience • Fully equip the Beacon, allowing it to fulfil its potential as a vibrant community hub

take a seat in the beacon

We are offering our patrons a unique opportunity to purchase a brand new seat in our main auditorium. A seat at The Beacon is a unique present to give or receive. Whether you want to celebrate a birthday, anniversary or Christmas, buy one for a loved one, a dearly departed friend or your children, we’ve seen people buy seats for all sorts of reasons. Seat buyers support our Stage and Light Appeal which enables us to equip The Beacon with the tools we require to create the magic of theatre. In return for your generous support, you will have your own personalised plaque displayed on one of our luxury seats. You can take a seat at The Beacon for just £500 and if you’d rather not pay it all in one go you can pay in instalments of £10 per month for 60 months. Thursday 18th – Saturday 21st September 7:30pm each night (2:30pm Matinee on Sat 21st)

Full: £10.00 Concession £8.00 Studio Theatre

Created by Joe Douglas and Gareth Nicholls, produced by macrobert and Utter.

Full: £15.00 Concession: £12.00 (Concession available on Thursday and Saturday Matinee only) Main Theatre

In 2002, Joe went on a gap year trip to Uganda, to visit an aunt who was working for a charity. Amidst the six week blur of safaris, white-water rafting and orphanages, Joe made friends with Ronnie....Ronnie was 16, Joe was 18. They were both the eldest sons of large families. They both supported Manchester United. Six months later, back in Manchester, Joe got a text:

Click your heels together and join Scarecrow, Tin Man, Lion, Dorothy and her little dog Toto, as they journey through the magical Land of Oz to meet the Wizard and obtain their heart’s desires.

“Brother my sponsor has pulled out on me and I want to stay in school. Can you help? Ronnie x”

Background Music by Herbert Stothart.

That text was to change both of their lives and inextricably link them together. An astonishing true story performed by Joe himself, Educating Ronnie takes place over a decade: 4000 miles apart and thousands of pounds invested, it explores the murky processes behind bettering oneself in Uganda.

Adapted by John Kane from the motion picture screenplay.

New Production. Sung in English.

Michael Neto is the first ever magician to win the title of Scottish Close-Up Magic Champion four years running, 2009, 2010, 2011 and 2012.

Director Chris Rolls and designer Oliver Townsend use their extensive theatrical expertise to capture the drama, and the elegance, of one of Handel’s most successful operas. Against a backdrop of faded Baroque grandeur, a cast of very contemporary characters tells a compelling tale of tyranny, love and the corrupting nature of power. Bertarido, King of Lombardy, has been defeated in battle and his enemy Grimoaldo has seized his throne. Bertarido’s queen, Rodelinda, mourns bitterly, little knowing that her husband is feigning death in order to exact revenge. Alone in a world of ruthless Machiavellian intrigue, where every wall has ears, she agrees to marry Grimoaldo. Distraught, Bertarido dismisses her as faithless, but allegiances change in the flick of a knife, and nothing is ever quite what it seems. Touring 16 of Scotland’s smaller venues in Autumn 2013, Rodelinda is accompanied by three instrumentalists – on harpsichord, violin and cello.

Full: £12.00 Concession: £10.00

Studio Theatre

By Henrik Ibsen.

We know you want to look, to stare even. It’s OK. You’re allowed.

Adapted by Alfred Enoch from William Archer’s translation.

If These Spasms Could Speak comes to Greenock after a full run at this year's Edinburgh Festival Fringe. An outstanding solo performance based on a collection of funny, sad, touching and surprising stories about disabled people and their bodies.

Helen Alving is trapped in a world where the ‘dead ideas’ preached by Pastor Manders rule outright, and her own family’s insidious legacy threatens scandal. She is desperately trying to conceal her husband’s philandering past by building an orphanage in his name, under the pastor’s guiding hand. But the celebrated return of her estranged son Oswald brings Helen’s ghosts back to haunt her, and all hopes of success are reduced to ashes.

Created and performed by actor Robert Softley (co-creator of National Theatre of Scotland’s Girl X) this show was a sell-out hit at the Arches’ BEHAVIOUR festival in 2012 and Edinburgh Festival Fringe in 2013. “Fine, fierce and inspirationa” «««« – Herald “A strong, sexy sense of the sheer value and beauty of life... [making] us see our own, with completely fresh eyes” «««« – Scotsman “Brilliantly funny - a canny and engaging performer. It's a pleasure to hear stories that are still often unspoken articulated so openly and so well,” «««« – FEST

Main Theatre

Though penned in 1881, it is not hard for us to see the parallels in our own society; the pious leaders of the past replaced with our own custodians of the status quo, and money their new religion. Alfred Enoch, best known for playing Dean Thomas in the Harry Potter franchise, masterfully adapts Ibsen’s Ghosts for its autumn tour 2013.

A Tribute to the music of Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Glen Miller and the Big Bands with Vocalists Heather Whiteford & Tommy Reid. The music of the Big Band Era was the culmination of over thirty years of musical development. The music was so innovative and different that it literally swept the world, changing the musical styles of nearly every country. Capitol Big Band will make your feet tap and your heart race with excitement when they perform on The Beacons main stage for the first time.

Studio Theatre

It’s the year 2013, 50 years since the first Hillman Imp motor car was produced at Linwood near Paisley, with the prospect of 9,000 jobs. Plays and books have been written on the subject and documentaries are being shown to celebrate the Imp’s achievements. But it no longer exists. The jobs redundant. Linwood is no more. A barren wasteland. The irony of the 50th birthday celebrations awaken the memories of a local, homeless, alcoholic who looks back fondly to happier times as a worker at the factory in 1965, only to face demons of two major events that changed his life for ever. The story is told with warmth and humour. Linwood no more is a one hour play for one actor - using images and film of the Linwood story, from 1963 to the present day.

“These violent delights have violent ends And in their triumph die, like fire and powder, Which as they kiss consume”.

The Scottish soldier is inextricably linked with the imagery of pipes and drums, with a long tradition of marching with a military band; as early as 1763 there is mention of a band of music in the 1st or Royal Regiment of Foot. The role of the Band of The Royal Regiment of Scotland is to support the Army and the State and all ceremonial occasions that occur in Edinburgh and beyond. The Royal Regiment of Scotland Band will hold a concert at the Beacon Arts Centre on 4th October 2013. It is a charity concert with proceeds going to Scottish Fire and Rescue Service Heritage Trust, a registered Scottish Charity, a donation from the proceeds will also go to the Soldiers Charity.

Studio Theatre

An ancient feud between the Capulets and Montagues rips apart the city of Verona. A young generation, caught up in its violence and hatred, perpetuates a situation over which they have no control. When Romeo and Juliet, children of the two mortal enemies, meet and fall passionately in love, they set in motion a chain of events that will destroy not only themselves but many of their friends. Acclaimed by audiences and critics alike, this 5-star production retells Shakespeare’s enduring story through the eyes of a younger generation betrayed by their elders and struggling to make sense of their emotions in a world they haven’t created.

Sam McTannan is a typical 15 year old, with one exception. Sam is a Superhero! He can literally turn See-Thru when it suits him, only today something is wrong. In Superhero comics they would call it a blip. Sam’s powers are failing him and the people he doesn’t want to see him, start paying him too much attention. With breath-taking animation throughout the production, The Incredible Adventures of See Thru Sam is the story of an ordinary boy whose extraordinary life falls apart after the death of his parents.

Tuesday 8th October Full: £7.00 Concession: £5.00 Main Theatre

By Nicola McCartney An original story of courage, survival and enduring friendship. Lifeboat is the extraordinary true story Bess Walder and Beth Cummings. Set in World War II, it is a story of courage, a story of survival and a story of enduring friendship. On Friday 13 September 1940, a ship, The City of Benares, set sail from Liverpool for Canada. On board were 90 evacuees escaping the relentless bombing and dangers of war torn Britain. Four days into the crossing, the ship was torpedoed and sank. Only eleven of the evacuees survived. Two fifteen year old girls, Bess Walder and Beth Cumming, spent 19 terrifying hours in the water on an upturned lifeboat. They willed each other to survive. Lifeboat tells their story.

A heartbreaking, life affirming comedy about life, love and being a total loser. Contains some strong language.
