So how do we follow that? In 2014 the local companies are presenting more of their excellent quality work than they have in previous years, increasing the number of productions and performances offered. Clearly the word has spread amongst audience, artists and companies alike that The Beacon is one of Scotland’s finest arts centres as lots of new acts are eager to come here including some of the best and some of the most popular acts in the UK; Comedian Jimeoin, Kiki Dee & Carmelo Luggeri, the hugely successful Nathan Carter. For those who like something a little different top Psychic Medium Derek Acorah will be visiting and for wildlife fans there’s a very special evening with BAFTA and Emmy winning photographer, Doug Allan. The Bistro has new management and our new Head Chef is adding fantastic value fine dining in the evening to enhance the highly successful lunch and daytime offering. Look out for our Palm Court Music afternoons and live music in the bar to enjoy with a coffee or with cocktails, wines and beers later in the day. It’s been a great year and we are looking forward to a burst of new energy in 2014 from our enriched programme and hope you will celebrate The Beacon’s birthday with us by booking a performance, a class, a meal or even all three. Hilarious world-class stand-up from one of live comedy’s internationally acclaimed masters! Jimeoin returns in 2014 with his ever-evolving live show… A fluid mixture of his signature observations, with hawk eye dissection of more of the absurdities of life and how we live it. You’ve seen him on TV in shows including ‘Live at the Apollo’, ‘The Royal Variety Performance’, ‘Channel 4’s O2 Comedy Gala, ‘Best of Edinburgh Comedy Festival’, 8 Out of 10 Cats, and ‘Michael McIntyre’s Comedy Roadshow’. But nothing beats seeing Jimeoin live book early!
A retired American steps off the plane at Prestwick, hoping to discover the land of his fathers. A beleaguered politician in Edinburgh dips her feet into a hot bath. An old drunk man in Peterhead has a mystical vision at the harbour. A supermarket checkout girl in Port Glasgow approaches work with a golf club… Set specifically in the town of each performance and drawing on storytelling, live music and the Scottish folk tradition, Rantin’ attempts to stitch together visions of Scotland’s romantic past with its everchanging present reality, revealing the patchwork identity of a nation.

Henry Bell had a dream, to fit an engine to a boat and supersede sailing ships. Great minds dismissed this idea, including the famous James Watt. Despite this, in 1812 the maiden voyage of Bell’s ‘Comet’ from Glasgow to Greenock heralded Europe’s first commercial steamship service. In time, steamships would be traversing the world.

Cast: Dave Anderson, Jack Mullan and Katie Barnett A Punch & Judy stall on a Scottish seaside front. An older guy, who might be a Punch & Judy exponent, or just somebody reminiscing about a time in his life when you could see such things on a Scottish seafront? We don’t know. What we do know is that this Punch & Judy stall is a magic box, full of characters from the old guy’s childhood, and perhaps from his story between then and now. He’s remembering a particular summer, 1960, when he was 15 years old. He’s still a child, but is going through the kind of boy-to-man stuff we all recognise; he’s already disillusioned with Elvis, for betraying his Poor-White-Trash roots, his Girl-BackHome is going off him for an older (16-year-old) guy, and his parents have dragged him off on holiday. In 1960 the old guy remembers, all things American were cool. Eisenhower was the President (“I Like Ike!”), and luckily, in light of the Elvis disappointment, there was Ray Charles and Chuck Berry and Bobby Darin…

It is a brilliant and raucously funny performance from a unique comic talent.” – Colin Lewis Not for the easily offended but what a fantastic show of slick card tricks, slight of hand and hard hitting non stop humour which comes at you like a runaway train !!!
