1 Siwan Gillick “My paintings use abstraction as a method and landscape experience as a source. I never set out knowing what the finished piece will ever look like; for that is not the point. I have to ‘find’ the painting through the processes of mark making and the layering and removing of paint. My sketchbooks that are filled whilst walking the borderlands are vital when back in my studio.” Siwan is currently working on some paintings for a group show in April at Studio Cennen, Llandeilo. Welsh Hills Jewellery

Welsh Hills Jewellery was created out of the love for working with silver and experiencing the incredible beauty of the landscape of North Wales. Breathtaking views constantly inspire new jewellery designs, capturing the colours and forms through gemstones and silver. With stunning mountains, moorlands and valleys the opportunities are endless, and as each season brings a new colour palette, the challenge to find the perfect gemstones and forge new work is exhilarating. Elly Jones Creative

Elly Jones is a nature inspired artist and printmaker in North Wales. Various concepts of nature are revealed through the weathered elements of light, layers, textures and reflection. Photographs taken around the Welsh countryside are further developed into handmade artworks using collagraph, monoprint and mixed media printmaking techniques. The conceptual relationship between media and metaphor is often explored by techniques that are tactile or spontaneously reactive. To reflect nature in evolving naturally throughout a process that responds to timing, environmental conditions, and media reactions. www.ellyjonescreative.com Instagram: @ellyjonescreative Facebook: @EllyJonesCreative

ne of the joys of having a gallery is the discovery of new artists, new makers, new ideas, vision, ways of seeing and expressing. Sometimes an artist finds their style or subject matter and stay with it, exploring that theme with a dedicated focus. If they were ploughing a field, it would be a tidy field with straight lines (if you watched “that” farming series, the tractor driver would be Caleb not Clarkson). Others however attack a variety of subjects in a variety of styles.

constant exploration, the irrepressible creativity.

Alex Brown | Coffee & Ricards

Alex Brown, based near Raglan in Monmouthshire, is this sort of artist. His technique remains steady with vigorous and brilliantly skilful use of a palette knife, and he constantly pushes the boundaries of colour and light. But his subjects vary wildly, the treatment is different, and his ploughed field would not be tidy, more like a wild and rutted tangle. And that is what I love about him and his work, the restless energy, the

From Welsh landscapes to London cityscapes, from flower studies to still life compositions with retro kettles, Alex creates paintings that reach out and grab you with their verve, colour and quality. If you can, pop in and see them in Bluestone.

isiting artists who are members of the International Felt maker’s Association (IFM) are joining the popular New Year show in Crickhowell’s Oriel CRiC gallery for a monthlong exhibition in March. Professional textile and jewellery designer maker Mandy Nash, a regional co-ordinator and Chair of the International Felt makers Association says, “Felt making, although an ancient craft, is growing into a popular, exciting contemporary medium, expanding in many new directions. Wool is a wonderful, natural and sustainable material.“ Mandy will be joined by seven fellow IFA members who demonstrate the versatility of the material to produce beautifully tactile three-dimensional work which range from richly coloured brooches and buttons, to hats, bags and wall pieces. Many of the artists take their inspiration from the natural world giving their work an organic feel. Louise Hancox’s latest body of work, entitled ‘Four Seasons’, includes twelve, small felt bowls and reflects observations from the shifting seasons, focusing on texture and form, inspired by favourite walks. She likes to encourage the viewer to hold the piece and appreciate the satisfying nature of the cupped form. Adding to the variety are the sculptural pieces by Karin Celestine. An artist and author, Karin creates needle felted animals of charm and character, stars of their own delightful stop-motion animations and their series of story books published with Graffeg. The world of Celestine and the Hare is a place where kindness, mischief and beauty help people find the magic in the ordinary. The variety of materials used by this creative group of textile artist is sure to delight visitors. The exhibition will run from 1 March to 2 April 2022. Opening hours 10am to 5pm Monday to Saturday.
