Wovens’ merino lambswool throws are cosy and warm, as well as stylish! And there are matching cushions and hot water bottles, too. Kerry Stokes weaves the designs on a hand loom, in her studio, trying out different colour combinations and

weave structures. In a traditional mill in Llandysul, Wales, skilled craftsmen then weave larger pieces. The fabrics are then expertly made up into finished products, such as throws, cushions and lampshades. Practical, sumptuous and very special!

The sense of light and space in the landscape, along with the changing seasons and atmosphere provides much inspiration to artists. Ali Edgson a previous winner of the Crickhowell Open Art competition successfully captures vibrancy and freshness in her evocative paintings which are a wonderful addition to the Oriel CRiC Gallery autumn exhibition.

New work by Tim Rossiter similarly tells the story of his inspiration. He says of one of his new paintings, “Walking by the Usk one day, I came across a lovely heron's feather, and it struck me that it was the colour of a dark rain bearing cloud. These combined as images in my mind to give rise to Storm Heron, and I made the lightening extra yellow to speak to the yellow and grey of the heron.” The many admirers of Tim’s paintings will be delighted by these new works.

The gallery is pleased to represent Paul Rickard, winner of Open Art Printmakers prize with a collection of prints. A degree of simplification and abstraction is present in the majority of Paul’s work paying homage to mid-20th century graphic and commercial art – items such as travel posters, advertising and book illustration.

As thoughts turn to the season of gift giving the selection ceramics, glass, sculpture and jewellery on offer alongside paintings and prints adds to the tempting variety. The autumn

exhibition continues until 19th of November and will be followed by the festive Christmas exhi bition. The 1st of December will see Late Night Opening in Crickhowell – always an evening that showcases the town at its charming best and which includes a Christmas Fair in the Clarence Hall.

Blue Magpie Contemporary Craft Fair

The Blue Magpie Fairs wouldn’t be the same without the much-loved tearoom and we’re delighted that it will once again be opening its doors in the basement of the house. With the weather turning chilly, there will be plenty of indoor seating, tucked away from any wintery breezes. Enjoy a range of drinks and homemade food – everything from soup, savoury muffins and cheese scones, to a selection of cakes, mince pies and mulled wine.

There’s a hive of activity at Elmslie House, with preparations in full swing for November’s Blue Magpie Contemporary Craft Fair.

Taking place over 3 days (18th, 19th and 20th November), there will be a changing line up of over 50 designer makers from a wide range of creative disciplines. With Christmas approaching, it will be the perfect opportunity to shop for handmade Christmas gifts in elegant surroundings, meet makers and enjoy the festive atmosphere.

We’re delighted to be welcoming familiar favourites back to Elmslie, as well as introducing some new makers. We pride ourselves on making sure the best designer makers come to Elmslie House and each one is selected by our small team.

From textiles, jewellery and art, to ceramics, mixed media and woodwork, there’s something for everyone and a host of hidden gems to be found among the fair’s stalls.

Admission is £3 on the door (cash or card) for adults, with accompanied children going free. This gives each visitor a wristband for (re) entry over all three days, as well as an opportunity to win a bag of goodies in the Makers’ Raffle.

For more information and to find out who’s exhibiting please visit www.bluemagpie.co.uk and more events at Elmslie House can be found on www.elmsliehouse.co.uk Makers details are also released via Instagram: @bluemagpiecraft @elmsliehousemalvern

Now the evenings are drawing in we are all having to turn on a lamp or two as the light fades. The pain of using that pricy electricity is somewhat mitigated if the lamp you have switched on is a work of art. When Bluestone was in Devizes we loved having Colin Chetwood’s superb creations and we are so pleased to have them once again here in Hay.

Working with a variety of materials Colin’s work combines quality craftsmanship with a brilliant eye for beautiful design. Our favourites are the ones with the lacquered tissue shades in pinks and cream. The combination of wood, metal, paper and inspiration create lamps that are a pleasure to use, and cast a lovely light.

A love of the countryside inspires the printmaking of Susan Stevens-Jenkins. She works from a tiny garden studio in rural Herefordshire, observing the changing textures and colours in the surrounding fields and orchards. The landscape she perceives is simplified to focus on flowing lines while texture and colour is informed by the addition of hand-coloured papers during the printing process, making each print unique.

Her work can be viewed on her website and a selection is also available at Oxenham Art in Leominster.

Susan has been developing her own style and techniques of making felt for more than fifteen years. The process enables hand-dyed colours of wool, silk, fabric and yarns to be laid, like pastel brushstrokes, to create rich blends of colours and textures, before being bonded together using soap, water and physical manipulation. Further embroidery creates added depth and texture.

Susan's most recent sequence of work is based on attempting to capture the ever-changing seasonal light conditions and colours of woodland and water.

Her work is presently exhibited at Made in the Marches Gallery, Kington, and The Willow Gallery, Oswestry.

St John Street, Working Street, Hills Street, the Hayes and Trinity Street

Trading Hours: Monday to Saturday 10am to 6pm Sunday 10am to 5pm

Open every day from Thursday 10 November to Friday 23 December 10am to 5.30pm Monday to Saturday, 10am to 5pm Sunday and 10am to 7pm every Thursday in December

Over 80 of our beautifully decorated wooden stalls will again adorn the pedestrian areas of Cardiff City Centre bringing you over 200 talented artists and crafts people, together with a varied selection of food and alcohol producers, including a small percentage of trade and co-operative exhibitors reflecting the ethos of our event.

Craft*folK have organised and developed the Cardiff Christmas Market in the pedestrian heart of Cardiff City Centre for over 30 years. We continue to be committed to providing a platform for artists, crafts people and food and drink producers to exhibit and sell their excep tional work directly to the general public. In today’s economic climate it is more important than ever to protect our arts and crafts herit age, to ensure that there is always a place in retailing for originality and diversity. We hope that this is one of reasons why our Christmas Market has been featured among the top ten best markets in the UK for the last few years.

Our beautifully decorated wooden stalls are located outdoors in St John Street, Working Street, Trinity Street and the Hayes. These pedestrian streets are very wide and so present no problem in allowing everyone to browse and shop safely.

Our talented makers with their unique products are the essence of what makes the Cardiff Christmas Market so special, with each one carefully selected to give you the best shopping offer possible. From Welsh slate and crafted candles, to tasty cheeses, fruit wines, silver jewellery, pottery and original artwork you’ll be able to find some thing for everyone on your Christmas gifts list whilst enjoying a glass of hot mulled wine as you browse.

Unlike the Christmas Markets you may find in other cities when you visit Cardiff, you can be assured that you will be purchasing original work from each and every one of our talented makers: bespoke silver jewellery, wooden turned gifts, original artwork across all mediums, beautiful fused glass work, hand thrown ceramics, handmade quilts and

textiles, slate work and traditional pewter gifts to name just a few combined with a variety of seasonal food and alcohol producers to create a vibrant Christmas atmosphere. You can also chat with them about their work, the making process, and discuss commissions if you wish.

Whilst we welcome returning exhibitors none of them rest on their laurels. As their craft is also their business, they are always creating new pieces of work thus ensuring that their stalls always look fresh and innovative. You will also see lots of new faces, testing out the market with their own work in our Taster Stalls, located in Trinity Street.

A comprehensive list of all participants will be published on our website closer to the start of the market including their trading dates, as not everyone takes part for the full event.

One of the frequently asked questions from customers during the market is why do we close so early when lots of shops stay open until 10pm? The answer is quite simple - our exhibitors are true artists and crafts people and although they try to put a percentage of their work aside throughout the year, in readiness for the Christmas Market, they also need time to return to their respective workshops at the end of each day either to complete orders or to make and/or finish off more of their work. This would be an impossible task if they also had to man their stalls until 10pm each day.

We would never impose this extra burden on them as we must respect and support our makers and the skills they are keeping alive through their work – if we don’t then hand made products will disappear.

If you are planning a visit and require further information about the Cardiff Christmas Market please contact Jane Hall at jane@craftfolk.com
