Gift Shop and Gallery Supports Local Makers and Artists

H

ay-on-Wye is world-renowned for its bookshops and literary festivals, but the town is also home to a range of other, small independent shops. One of the newest to open is Oil & Oak, a gift shop and gallery at the heart of the town, which stocks a wonderful array of handmade items from around 40 local makers and artists.

As a testament to the truly inclusive space that Abi has created, a number of the artists work regularly in the shop, allowing customers to find out first hand about the techniques, time and passion it takes to make these pieces of art, as well giving them the opportunity to discuss bespoke items direct with the maker. The two upstairs rooms also host regular art exhibitions as well as workshops and childrens’ art clubs – a crafty way to keep the kids entertained for an hour or two! Abi says: “We are committed to conscious shopping and work hard to showcase design-led, high quality, hand-crafted work that is made responsibly and sustainably. Variety and inclusivity is at the heart of everything we do so why not pop in an have a look around ... you’re sure to find something really unique!”

Exhibitions

All items are carefully selected by shop owner Abi Coombs who spent years working as a curator and artist in Bristol before moving to Hay in 2020, with her husband and new baby. She has always dreamt of opening a shop where local makers could showcase and sell their work and says:

For me, running a creative business is less about the hustle and more about heart. I’ve always felt art should be accessible for everyone and, opening this gift shop and gallery, where I can support local makers, crafters and artists, seems a natural evolution.” Spread over two floors, the shop contains a gorgeous selection of art, ceramics, jewellery, sculpture, homeware, cards, wrapping paper, clothing, beauty products and much, much more.

he return of the Crickhowell Open Art exhibition was a welcome addition to the Platinum Jubilee weekend activities and annual Open Studios weekend and was a true celebration of creativity. In addition to a prize of £500 for the overall winner various category prizes were awarded. Overall winner: Carol Bartlet Tower Gallery Prize: Nick Pritchard Textile Award: Mary Gladstone Watercolour Award: John R Harris Young Artist Award: Joanna Groves Digital Award: Stuart Lloyd Printmakers Award: Paul Rickard Visitors’ Choice Award: Wendy Mcleod

Quality and variety has become a hallmark of the exhibition drawing artists from a wide area. Overall winner Carol Bartlet is a textile artist from Penarth, South Wales. She uses collaged fabrics and thread to draw with a free-motion embroidery technique. As is the case with her winning entry ‘Mr Leas’s shop’, Carol often uses historical photographs taken from local lives and businesses from Cardiff and Penarth to inspire her stitched pictures. Open Art Organiser Suzette Pratten added, “We very much appreciate that artists have enabled us to show a wonderfully diverse mix of works in a vast array of styles and media. We are equally grateful for prizemoney in excess of £2000 which was donated by supporters of the gallery. These generous donations reflect the immense support the oriel CRiC gallery receives from individuals who value its ethos. The Open Art exhibition continues until the 16th of July and will be followed by the Summer exhibition. We look forward to welcoming friends new and old.” Oriel CRiC Gallery, Beaufort Street, Crickhowell NP8 1 BN gallery@visitcrickhowell.wales www.orielcric.wales

Blooming by Jill Jones

F

rolic in the wildflower meadows and get lost amongst the hedgerows in a new solo exhibition by Pembrokeshire artist Jill Jones that is a bloom-inspired celebration of colour. Showcasing the flowers of Wales, “Blooming” by Jill Jones comes to Life: Full Colour this summer and will open on 8th July. Awash with dazzling yellows, bright pinks, sky blues, and glorious reds, the exhibition predominantly features impressionist landscapes alongside a series of abstract paintings. All works are acrylic.

Summer Path Through

“We have the most amazing array of wildflowers and hedge flowers in April and May. There is no end of inspiration in Pembrokeshire. We’re lucky to live in such a stunning location with breathtaking views,” explains Jill. Typically known for her skies, sunsets and seascapes, floral scenes are a departure for Jill but she’s really enjoyed the process. “I’ve worked solidly on this exhibition for the last few months, and it’s been an absolute joy. I love painting. It is energising, cathartic, and rejuvenating. I simply adore it.” The paintings will evoke special memories for everyone, whether it’s the favourite flower of a loved one, time spent as a child exploring meadows and woodlands, or going for walks along the awe-inspiring coastal paths of North Wales. “In the main, everything I do is joy or hope inspired and I think visitors to the exhibition will find a lot to enjoy in all the paintings,” concludes Jill.

Cennin Pedr

In this collection, Jill has beautifully captured native daffodils, Welsh poppies, cornflowers, water lilies, snowdrops and wildflowers, as well as much loved flowers like chrysanthemums and roses. The images are so lush you can almost hear the buzzing bees and see the butterflies dancing across the meadows.

Jill’s love of Wales is evident in all her work featuring glorious skies, gentle moonlit scenes and wild images of the wonderfully unspoilt Welsh countryside. With a strong colour palette, her pieces range from dramatic seas to quaint cottages, and also includes diversely bold and dynamic, vibrant abstracts. “Blooming” by Jill Jones opens at Life: Full Colour, 23-25 Hole in the Wall Street in Caernarfon, on 8th July and closes 6th August.
