LUDLOW ART SOCIETY SUMMER EXHIBITION
www.ludlowartsociety.org.uk

11 August – 23 September 2023

In her latest exhibition, aptly titled "FOUND," Conwy artist Jocelyn Roberts takes us on a captivating journey along the beach, inviting us to discover the enchanting world of found objects. Through her artwork, Jocelyn sheds light on the beauty and intrigue of the everyday items left behind by the tides. With a keen eye for still life and a penchant for coastal walks, she explores the hidden stories that lie within these discovered artifacts.

The exhibition features a collection of vibrant oil paintings that capture the essence of these found objects. Jocelyn masterfully plays with natural daylight, infusing her pieces with a captivating palette that beautifully showcases the colours and textures of her subjects. From stacks of stones and rows of pottery to clusters of sea glass and arrangements of shells, the artworks evoke a sense of curiosity, urging viewers to contemplate the social context and significance of our interactions with the coastline.

bronze, possess a weight and texture that mimic the organic feel of beach pebbles. Placed on plinths, they beckon visitors to pick them up, allowing the objects to acquire their own patina over time and forging a tangible connection between the viewer and the coastal landscape.

In the spirit of discovery, Jocelyn has also ventured into the realm of sculpture in this exhibition, creating her own versions of hag stones inspired by the elements. These sculptures, meticulously crafted in stone and

Jocelyn’s artistic journey in "FOUND" extends beyond the mere aesthetics of found objects. With her work, she poses thought-provoking questions about our relationship with the beach and the traces we leave behind. By incorporating items like an ice-cream scoop, a Victorian clay pipe, or even a pair of action figure legs, Jocelyn challenges us to reassess the evolving nature of society and our impact on the environment.

This exhibition is a testament to Jocelyn’s desire to be heard through her art. By illuminating the often-overlooked aspects of our surroundings, she sparks a conversation about the beauty and diversity of the world we inhabit. Through her paintings and sculptures, Jocelyn invites us all to pause, reflect, and appreciate the extraordinary within the ordinary.

“FOUND” opens at Life: Full Colour on 11 August and can be seen until 23 September. The gallery is open every Wednesday to Saturday, 11am to 6pm and is located at 23-25 Hole in the Wall Street, Caernarfon.

LANDSHAPES & LEGEND

the first solo exhibition by Rachel Jones

Rachel Jones is a Swansea based artist who has exhibited her work at many venues and open competitions across South Wales. In 2021, Rachel was delighted to become a gallery artist at Queen Street Gallery in Neath.

“Working mainly in acrylics, I often use processes and ideas from watercolour, pastel and printmaking. I allow my paintings to evolve organically, one idea sparking the next. Using both figurative and abstract elements, my themes grow and change direction naturally.”

Rachel’s landscapes are largely painted from memory and imagination; wide open spaces and dramatic skies feature heavily in her work.

“ I am particularly drawn to patterns created on the land by fleeting changes of light. For me, these transient effects bring to mind the history, folklore and culture of the area and I will often include references to this in my paintings.”

The ‘Landshapes & Legend’ exhibition features a series of nine owl paintings, which are inspired by one of Rachel’s favourite stories from the Welsh legends of the Mabinogion.

“Blodeuwedd was a beautiful young woman magically conjured from flowers and ultimately transformed into an owl, never again to dwell in the sunlight.”

See Rachel Jones’ exhibition of art at Queen Street Gallery Neath. The exhibition runs from the 2nd - 30th September, Tuesday - Saturday, 10am - 4pm or by appointment.

Local Welsh artist Alwyn Isaac’s artwork reflects his love of, not only his beloved valleys, but also the local Welsh coastline.

“I was born in Tonyrefail and I loved it there but I came to Aberdare through working at the Fire Service. I have always painted and there is so much to inspire me in the surrounding area. You don’t have to go far - there is the country park, historical monuments and buildings and wildlife. The area is perfect for artists.”

Susan Stevens-Jenkins is a printmaker living in rural Herefordshire. Love of the natural world and the surrounding countryside inspire and inform her work. Current prints capture moments in the life of her garden: the discovery of one Welsh poppy, self-seeded in the gravel path, a ruby red poppy, vibrant against early summer greenery. Or the moment when the first cherries ripen and there are just enough for a small bowl to be enjoyed in the afternoon sun.

Many of her prints are available as greetings cards and work can be seen at Oxenham Gallery in Leominster.

She runs courses from her studio and brings in the best tutors from around the country. She also teaches herself and covers drawing, design and painting using mixed media. Her textile work has in the past explored dyeing and printing combined with various forms of embellishment by both hand and machine. Her book ‘Stitched Textiles’ Flowers, published by Search Press reflects these creative methods. Current work shows her artistic response in the use of bark cloth from Southern Uganda, a country she travelled to on many occasions.

I moved to Hereford in 2004 to concentrate full-time on my painting career. After many exhibitions in London and the South East, my first solo show in Hereford Courtyard was in 2008. A regular h.Art exhibitor, I won an h.Art Prize in 2021 at the Old Mayors Parlour. My work was also featured on a BBC Arts Programme in 2009.

I taught art classes for many years, most recently with Ukrainian refugees in Hereford. Printmaking has become a passion lately, especially monoprints which are very painterly. My work is in the expressionist tradition, with strong vibrant colours and expressive gestures. I work in oils, acrylics, water colour and pen & ink.

Helen loves to share her passion for rich colour and tactile media. She also finds solace in nature and landscape. These two combine to inspire her vivid paintings. It’s as if the wild elements have entered her work, emphasising our emotional response to the natural world.

Several galleries represent her, including Bluestone Gallery, Hay-on-Wye, and The Courtyard, Hereford. Her stone-built studio is perched on the edge of the Welsh border in Longtown, close to The Black Hill. And she runs Skirrid Gallery from home, opening for h.Art: Tuesday 5/9/23 to Sunday 10/9/23,10am–4pm.

Kim is a wood turner who’s philosophy is; ‘From the hands of the artist to the heart of the beholder’.

The simplicity of vessel forms created display the grain and natural colour of the woods being used. His creating is a response to the nature of the wood and is intuitive and emotional. His concern is with the form and surface, function becomes peripheral.

Kim is part of the Artists’ Gallery at Bromfield and his work can also be seen at Art at Penallt 18th to 20th August. He will be taking part in H-Art 2nd – 10th Sept at Leintwardine Church and The Lion Ballroom Leominster. Also at Granary Gallery, Weston Park 1st to 28th September.
