I am a Welsh potter based in North Wales. My work incorporates nature through ceramic glazes. I began my ceramic journey by experimenting with low quantities of oxides in a glaze to produce vivid colours at low temperatures. Intrigued by glaze theory and inspired by the nature around me I have developed the oxide glazes and have begun to introduce local iron ochre into crackled glazes. I forage the iron ochre from my family’s farmland and add it to a low firing glaze, thus creating a stunning individual glaze on each vessel. Every pot is unique, hand thrown and glazed. To purchase any of my work, please visit my website.

Nesta Eluned is a North Wales artist living and painting in Snowdonia. Her approach ranges from plein-air sessions to studio work and embraces an extensive range of materials and techniques. Layering paint to build depth with a range of marks created from different materials, Nesta’s art fuses classical landscape compositions with abstract expression. This comes through dynamic mark making and gestures that come naturally from being immersed in the wild, mystic and uncompromising environment of Eryri and the North Wales coast. Her work is evocative, lyrical, vibrant and conveys a deep and heartfelt connection with the landscape it depicts.

Finding inspiration is never difficult, living in North Wales by the sea enables inspiration to pop out every time I look out of the window or go walking. For me personally art is a way to express freedom in a boundaryless space without conformity, where a colour and texture encased form exists. The rendered form you see before you is not just a bird or a flower, it is a tangible collection of colour and texture that has been brought together on the canvas. Experimentation is one of the best aspects of being an artist, how else can we develop our skills and find new and wonderful ways to conjure our imagination!

I live in North wales and am inspired by the coast and hills, stone circles, ancient wood and eroded surfaces – anything natural and textured! I enjoy the spontaneity of the clay to begin with, shaping clay into various forms. I make for the enjoyment of the material and therefore have a variety of hand building techniques. I gouge out solid pieces, slab build, coil, drape slabs into moulds and formers and carve solid pieces of clay. The multilayering of glazes and building up an un even surface over the heavily carved clay further amplifies the natural appearance of my sculptures.

3 Jane Tudge A visual artist inspired by the hidden narrative of the internal landscape, Jane Tudge creates truly unique, multi-disciplinary art. Inspired by her North Worcestershire landscapes, Michelle Doidge is a self-taught artist who has been practising her art for over 30 years. Working in oils and pastels as well as metallic acrylics, Michelle’s art is vibrant and packed with texture, giving an almost 3D quality to her extraordinary work. Michelle’s secret to these striking effects is quite surprising, using Polyfilla to achieve that heavy impasto look. With the ancient countryside of North Worcestershire as her muse, Michelle’s art often features magical sunsets as well as seascapes from her travels to the coast. Always striving to push boundaries, Michelle also produces incredible abstract art, which can be viewed on her website.

Sian aka Elsker Creations is a botanical artist creating gilded pressed flower artworks and products. ‘Elsker’ means love in Danish and Elsker Creations combines her love of the natural world with traditional crafts. Elsker Creations' artworks and products are inspired by the Herefordshire countryside where Sian is based. She picks, presses and gilds flowers that are grown from the garden or from her environment so the works tend to be very seasonal using wildflowers and cottage garden blooms. Sian is very passionate about traditional crafts such as; bookbinding, gilding, calligraphy and letterpress printing. She has been honing these skills for the past 10 years and applying them to her products. Gold leaf features prominently within all Elsker Creations products using it to highlight and show off the natural beauty of the flowers.
“Walking informs much of my arts practice and I draw upon these connected experiences to create printed images that tell their own unique stories.”

After the successful annual Open Art exhibition the Oriel CRiC Gallery in Crickhowell the gallery has enjoyed a summer which brought with it plenty of sunshine and visitors happy to explore Crickhowell and all it has to offer. It has been particularly pleasant to welcome them to the summer exhibition with a focus on celebrating and promoting our regular and local artists who find much inspiration in the surrounding landscape. New work includes a small oil painting by Paul Burgess, well-known for his wonderful depiction of light in the woodland landscape. Inspired by fallen trees and hawthorns on Llangattock mountain, painter and printmaker Martin Truefitt-Baker has added a collection of paintings in watercolour, pencil and pen which capture the atmosphere to perfection. His two newest pieces. The 'Kingfisher, evening rain' and 'Winter Hillside Badgers' have been added to a selection of wildlife linoprints. The paintings and prints of popular artists such as Lee Wright, David Haswell, Louise Collis, Rhian Symes and John R Harris amongst others, make the gallery an exceptionally inspiring and uplifting destination. The exhibition includes a varied array of ceramics, studio glass and jewellery displaying great craftsmanship. The autumn exhibition starts mid-September and will include new work by Crickhowell based artist Tim Rossiter and printmaker Paul Rickard.

You will leave with the knowledge to successfully dye yarn and fabrics with lasting colour to use in your projects at home, as well as the samples you have dyed that day. Our courses open the door to the world of natural colour and you will be amazed at the rainbow of colours you will be able to produce using Nature and a little knowledge.

It has since expanded to become a worldwide project, with Kevin inviting people to share their shoreline images to become part of an exhibition and a book. “I’ve received hundreds of images which I’ve curated to develop an exhibition that I’m now taking to different countries, alongside my own drawings and photographs,” explained Kevin.
“Visitors to the exhibition in Caernarfon will see my art alongside work by local photographers, plus photographs by artists and household names including Griff Rhys Jones, Alison Dunlop, Paul Murton and Sir Chris Bonnigton.”

The Global Shorelines Project is an initiative of artist and retired arts teacher Kevin Healy. The project started as a collection of Kevin’s personal artistic responses to the many and varied transition points between sea and land. Through drawing and photography, Kevin celebrated the colour, pattern and texture found in natural landforms.
Kevin was prompted to expand the project after he and his wife witnessed the impact of plastics and litter while exploring coastal areas after their retirement. “For anyone invested in the sea and the natural environment, it does not take long to discover the tragic side effects of human interference,” Kevin said. “Plastic pollution is a particular scourge of coastal and marine habitats and a great many concerned groups across the planet are working to stem this particular tide.”
The Green Bridge, Pembrokeshire
With the impact of plastics front of mind, Kevin has made The Global Shorelines Project a not-for-profit initiative, supporting marine conservation charities through the sale of Kevin’s artworks and reproductions. The accompanying exhibition catalogue is also available to buy, with all profits going directly to the Marine Conservation Society UK. Sara McKee, founder of Life: Full Colour, said: “We opened our yellow gallery in Caernarfon during the pandemic of 2020 and we wanted to make it accessible and relevant to as many people as possible. Our focus is on supporting talented Welsh artists and also providing a space for shows that are campaigning for an issue that’s important to us all. Global Shorelines delivers on both levels with its conservation arts project. Not only is Kevin bringing together images of coastlines around the world, but he’s also actively encouraged photographers from North Wales to get involved.

When Roo Waterhouse contacted us a few months ago and said “I paint books” we were intrigued. If anywhere suits paintings of books, it must be Hay on Wye, the original and best Book Town, created by the late great Richard Booth. Roo happens to be friends with a jeweller, Kate Rhodes, whose work we have sold for many years. It was Kate who mentioned to Roo that we had moved from Devizes to Hay, and suggested that she contact us, so thank you Kate. Kate’s makes brilliantly stylish jewellery working with silver, titanium, copper and brass. Books are a such an important part of our lives. They entertain, inform, inspire. Old books hold memories, they can take us back to childhood, they can magic us into mysteries or fling us into the future. New books are full of possibility, and the anticipation of opening the cover and reading the first page is something to savour. Roo creates her paintings with a great deal of thought, and immense skill. The books are themed around topics, such as gardening, cooking, crime, travel, authors and so on. I love the way some of the battered spines and curled pages show the wear and tear, the repeated use. Fonts are lovingly and perfectly painted. Often the wallpaper behind a shelf is taken from the author’s home, as in the case of Jane Austen and the Brontës. Her work is a lovely fusion of art and literature, and simply perfect for Hay on Wye.
