Made in the Marches is a venue to celebrate and showcase the work of both established and emerging artists and makers who live and work in the Marches of Herefordshire, Shropshire and Powys. Led by a small co-op of local artists, whose combined imagination, enthusiasm and experience creates a vibrant hub of creativity and expression for Kington.

Fondly remembered by locals as a long-time café, and more recently an antiquarian bookshop, this characterful space now fills a new role in the community, exhibiting artwork in all media, from paintings to jewellery, ceramics to textiles, alongside cards, art materials, and gifts. Hosting monthly exhibitions, each curated by a different artist, we are proud and pleased to present a diverse and changing collection of art and craft, reflecting the talent and creativity of this beautiful region.

Visit MadeintheMarches.com, or follow @madeinthemarchesgallery, for more details about what you can discover with us during h.Art, 2nd-10th September 2023, including Meet the Artist and Demonstrations.

Katherine Kingdon makes ceramics under the name of Fatbelly Pots. The curious name hints at the nature of her work, which is highly individual, unusual, and enigmatic. The pots suggest stories, with an atmosphere that is intriguing, odd, and sometimes plain weird. Characters hold items like headphones, a can of beer, or a bird, in clothes that mix modern with medieval, and gather in groups like a modern Bruegel painting. I love the way her decorations challenge our imagination, and her characters with books are of course perfect for Hay on Wye. These pots are as deep, as others by some celebrity "ceramic artists" are shallow.

“I use clay to make figurative sculptures and illustrated vessels and am always looking for meaning in the random and irrelevant. In my current work I am having fun exploring character through pose, facial expression and sometimes text. I enjoy the suggestions of stories that develop and the dynamics within a group of figures. The work I make is small, carefully crafted and delights in imperfections. I spend time with each piece considering how to best show its character. Not cleaning up and hiding its individuality but looking for ways of emphasising that which it is. I throw and tear and stick, working with both plan and chance then look and think and hunt for possibilities. From these possibilities characters and stories evolve.”

THE BEST FROM THE WEST

8 artists & makers capturing & inspired by West Wales

With such extraordinary inspiration all around, from its rich agricultural farmlands and its famous coastline, teaming with wildlife, it’s no wonder so many artists and makers are so captivated by West Wales.

This September, we wanted to showcase to you the absolute best

Delyth Williams

Instagram: @ delyth.williams_colourcanvas

I'm Delyth, an emerging contemporary painter based in Newport, Pembrokeshire.

I'm drawn to painting Contemporary Seascapes because they allow me to capture the raw emotion of the sea and sky and translate it into a visual play of abstract shapes and vibrant colours.

I'm interested in how a sense of movement, response and passion can be expressed through painting, and I know it can be a source of wellbeing for those that feel its energy. My hope is that people will come to my art with a sense of joy and happiness, and find something unique in every painting that resonates with them.

Working on canvas with acrylic paint and drawing from my sketches, I combine geometry and colour to create bold works of art. For me, it's all about experimenting with colour palettes, layering colour, transparencies and opacities and varying ways of applying paint to create something new and unexpected.

from the West in all kinds of incredible mediums and interpretations. Each amazing artist & maker will show you how they are inspired by West Wales through their own unique perspective.

For gift ideas or interior inspiration for the home or office, you’re in the right place! Get regular news and updates from all the artists and makers seen here, by following them on their social media pages.

Facebook: @Rustic Revolution

Rustic Revolution has created unique, distinctive pieces of rustic furniture, sculptures & felt artwork since 2003, using local, organic wool and wood.

We are a married couple (Dom & Jeni) who enjoy coming up with innovative ideas combining the two materials. The natural forms of the wood and wool can determine the end result, this works well for us as neither of us ‘do straight lines’.

Being self-taught, we enjoy learning through discovery in a serendipitous way and of course are influenced by the stunning, magical environment of Pembrokeshire.

Jill Jones Fine Art

Pembrokeshire artist and tutor, Jill Jones, is based in Talbenny, Haverfordwest; painting and running art courses in her purpose-built studio and gallery, West Coast Studio.

Jill supplies galleries across Wales with originals, Giclée prints and greetings cards.

Jill’s love of Wales is evident in her work, which features glorious huge skies, gentle moonlit scenes and wild images of the unspoilt Welsh countryside. She paints dramatic seas, florals and quaint cottages, and also includies bold and dynamic, vibrant abstracts.

The growing popularity of Jill’s work can be seen on her website, by the significant number of ‘sold’ works shown.

Ceramic artist Lesley Badger follows a long line of artists who have been influenced by their environment and the natural world.

Living alongside the Pembrokeshire coastal path in Freshwater East, Lesley is surrounded by the stunning coastal landscape, which inspires her unique work. Her contemporary pieces are strong and simple but have complex surfaces, which she hopes draws the viewer to explore her work in more depth.

Lesley’s ceramics can be found in various Galleries around West Wales or contact her direct.

Pembrokeshire-based artist Louise Lily King is inspired by Nature and its role in the mythology, folktales and storytelling of Britain and Ireland; she has a particular fascination for Welsh myth and folklore, and the collection of stories known as the Mabinogion.

Creating highly detailed drawings, often subtly embellished with metal leaf, Louise aims to capture the character and symbolism of the wild creatures and plants which play such an important role in these stories.

beautiful crafts, locally made

If you appreciate high quality, handmade crafts, you may be interested to learn about Vale Makers: a group of skilled craftspeople who live and work in the rural Vale of Glamorgan. Based in the small market town of Cowbridge, Vale Makers was formed in 2019 with the purpose of promoting the work of local makers based in more rural parts of the county and providing them with a platform to sell their unique creations. The members work in a wide range of media from wood and ceramics to textiles, glass and print and always strive for high standards in everything they produce. Examples of their work can be seen online at valemakers.org. If you are looking for a special gift, or a focal piece for your home, then look no further than our Makers Markets which are held regularly throughout the year. Primarily our markets are held in Cowbridge but also in the nearby coastal town of Penarth. Our customers are drawn to the accomplished works on display and are particularly pleased that their purchases are supporting small, local businesses.

The close-knit group is run on a notfor-profit basis by a small, dedicated team of members who all understand the pressures of trying to sell their pieces. Money raised from membership subscriptions and stall fees is ploughed back into advertising and venue hire, helping to bring the Vale Makers to a wider audience.

Magical Realms of Watercolours!

From dramatic coastlines and rugged hills to historic castles, the artists in Life: Full Colour’s latest show have captured the essence of Wales’s splendour with poetic imagination and plenty of atmosphere.

Visit the gallery this October to explore the talents of watercolour artists Andrew Jenkin and Gary Griffiths as they take you on a magical journey through Wales.

His colour palette is bright, inspired by the Pre-Raphaelite’s use of bold colour and a desire to capture the same luminosity. You’ll often see the deep intensity of a Prussian Blue along with the rich red of an Alizarin Crimson in Andrew’s paintings.

Andrew is an artist, author and illustrator. Andrew originally studied ancient history before working as a land surveyor where he found himself exploring architectural landscapes. A leap into watercolour classes at the North Light Gallery in Huddersfield proved to be a pivotal moment. Now, Andrew blends his fascination for history and folklore with his love of painting.

Andrew enjoys working outdoors, trying to capture the beautiful countryside of North Wales. He completes most of his preparatory work on-site, visiting the location many times to make compositional sketches, tonal studies, and colour notes. A large painting is then gradually created in his studio.

In his paintings, Andrew embraces the fluidity of the medium, letting water take the lead and guiding his brush with a "wet on wet" technique that Andrew describes as loose, splashy, and chaotic. This willingness to relinquish control and let the paint dictate the direction results in artworks that are both vibrant and spontaneous

Andrew’s work will appear alongside paintings by Gary Griffiths who has lived in North Wales throughout his adult life. A self-taught watercolour artist, Gary retired four years ago to focus on painting and his work is displayed in galleries across Wales and Ireland.

Whilst practising traditional watercolour techniques that exploit the transparency of the medium, Gary is also drawn to exploring depths of colour and tonal contrasts. Constantly learning and experimenting his works capture transient moments in the timeless drama of the landscape of Wales and Ireland.

Gary and Andrew’s work can be seen in the Watercolour Show at Life: Full Colour from 30 September to 28 October. The gallery is located at 23-25 Hole in the Wall Street, Caernarfon, and is open every Wednesday to Saturday, 11am to 6pm.

The summer exhibition has seen visitors to the oriel CRiC gallery in Crickhowell relish the variety and the sense of place that is reflected in the works of art. The textures and colours of the Welsh landscape and its flora and fauna are at the heart of many of the works which includes a range of sculptures, ceramics and jewellery. The varied summer exhibition continues until 16 September.

The gallery is delighted to welcome a joyous collection of exquisitely handcrafted quilts by mid Wales textile artist Annie Griffiths whose passion lies in the design of quilts that uplift the spirit with their vibrant colour, texture and design.

Annie says of her work, “With every cut and meticulous assembly of shapes, I weave together the threads of imagination and craftsmanship. Each quilt becomes a testament to my devotion, infused with a profound sense of care and attention to detail. As I meticulously stitch and layer, I imbue my work with the essence of my surroundings—the vibrant landscapes, the rich heritage, and the gentle rhythms of life in Wales”.

The autumn exhibition which will run from 20 September will include many of the gallery’s regular exhibitors, such as Martin Truefitt-Baker, Tim Rossiter and Rhian Symes. It will also see the return of Ali Edgson, whose evocative landscape paintings justifiably have many admirers, and of wildlife artist Tracey-Anne Sitch.

It is her hope that “within this exhibition, my quilts will resonate with viewers, eliciting a sense of wonder, serenity, and a profound connection to the beauty that surrounds us”.

Patricia Kelly well known for her irresistible, colourful and quirky ceramic figures has worked collaboratively with Annie to create ceramics inspired by the designs, contributing in no small way to the visual journey. This not to be missed exhibition will run until 11 November. Oriel CRiC Gallery, Beaufort Street, Crickhowell, NP8 1BN www.orielcric. wales

Cardiff Christmas Market 2022

Thursday 10 November to Friday 23 December

Trading Hours:

Monday to Saturday 10am to 6pm Sunday 10am to 5pm

Craft*folK have organised and developed the Cardiff Christmas Market in the pedestrian heart of Cardiff City Centre for over nearly 30 years. We continue to be committed to providing a platform for artists, crafts people and food and drink producers to exhibit and sell their exceptional work directly to the general public. In today's economic climate it is more important than ever to protect our arts and crafts heritage, to ensure that there is always a place in retailing for originality and diversity. We hope that this is one of reasons why our Christmas Market has been featured among the best top ten markets in the UK for the last few years.

Jane A Edwards Art

hand thrown ceramics, handmade quilts and textiles, slate work and traditional pewter gifts to name just a few combined with a variety of seasonal food and alcohol producers to create a vibrant Christmas atmosphere. You can also chat with them about their work, the making process, and discuss commissions if you wish.

Whilst we welcome returning exhibitors none of them rest on their laurels. As their craft is also their business, they are always creating new pieces of work thus ensuring that their stalls always look fresh and innovative. You will also see lots of new faces, testing out the market with their own work in our Taster Stalls, located in Trinity Street.

Our beautifully decorated wooden stalls are located outdoors in St John Street, Working Street, Trinity Street and the Hayes. These pedestrian streets are very wide and so present no problem in allowing everyone to browse and shop safely.

A comprehensive list of all participants will be published on our website closer to the start of the market including their trading dates, as not everyone takes part for the full event.

Jane enjoys experimenting with different mediums in a wide variety of subjects. Her inspiration comes from spending time out walking and taking photographs within the Welsh countryside where she has spent most of her life.

Unlike the Christmas Markets you may find in other cities when you visit Cardiff, you can be assured that you will be purchasing original work from each and every one of our talented makers: bespoke silver jewellery, wooden turned gifts, original artwork across all mediums, beautiful fused glass work,
