The original oil paintings by contemporary artist Paul Burgess are central to the first exhibition of 2024 in the oriel CRiC gallery, Crickhowell. The meditative nature of his landscapes express his deep connection with the woodland landscape, captured with infinite skill. Complemented by paintings, prints, ceramics and sculpture by regular exhibitors such as John R Harris, Louise Collis, Martin Truefitt-Baker, Lee Wright and others it creates a wonderful sense of place.

The arrival of paintings by elected members of the Royal Watercolour Society of Wales in mid-March will showcase the art of watercolour in its many guises. Since its inception in 1959 the RWSW has aimed to provide a forum for the continuing appreciation and development of the medium, along with some water based mixed media. The challenges of the medium are met while responding to themes as diverse as natural forms, climate change, manmade structures and Celtic tales and legends often capturing transient moments or the effects of light and atmosphere. The paintings range from the small and intimate such as those by Daphne Hurn depicting remote, sometimes derelict buildings shaped by their history and use to the impressive larger paintings by Neil Johnson whose more recent work considers surveillance and

observation. The variety of styles and subject matter are sure to delight visitors to the gallery this spring.

Entries are open for the Crickhowell Open Art competition which results in an exhibition of selected work starting during the Spring Bank Holiday Weekend. A highlight of the gallery’s programme, it gives an opportunity to exhibit in this small but beautiful gallery space in the heart of the Brecon Beacons and Black Mountains. It annually attracts an exciting mix of professional, emerging and amateur artists culminating in a diverse exhibition starting during the Crickhowell Open Studios Weekend (25 to 27 May 2024) and continuing till early July.

For more information on the Open Art exhibition, please contact Suzette Pratten at gallery@visitcrickhowell.wales or visit www.orielcric.wales

The construction of Christian's ceramic forms are produced in a conventional way, however using special techniques while throwing on the wheel he's able to create original art craft forms. The use of mixed media such as copper, wood and stone is part of what defines these unique ceramics. Christian develops his own ideas and techniques while designing his functional sculptures in the forms of teapots, bowls and vessels.

The town, the river and countryside around Newport have been a constant inspiration to me.

Lyn’s paintings are very much inspired by the stunning landscape, coastlines, harbours and villages of Wales. Painting mainly in acrylics, Lyn has developed her own unique style which reflects the bold colours and outlines of the Welsh landscape which she so loves.

Lynartwales paintings are bold and contemporary and available as original paintings, giclee prints, beautiful canvas prints and greeting cards, all at very affordable prices. The full selection can be seen in Lyn’s Etsy Shop.

Anew year brings new work. We are delighted to have been chosen by Helen Arthur to exhibit paintings from her “Inky Beacons” series, a completely new and exciting direction for her. These are painted outdoors come rain or shine. The brush work is fast and fluid giving wonderful impressionistic effects. The muted colours are made vibrant by the bold energy of the strokes. We love the way the landscape and weather of the Beacons are captured with such imagination and insight.

Also new is a selection of very varied work by Herefordshire artist Humphrey Stanley. He admits to be slightly obsessed by this oak, which you can find on the edge of Monmouth town. Using watercolour he manages to get superb detail into the bare branches of this magnificent ancient tree.

Another passion of Humphrey’s is birds, which you can clearly see in other paintings by him on our website.

Rachel is a printmaker based in Wakefield. She finds inspiration in nature, in particular line and pattern. She is interested in all forms of printmaking with a focus on linocut.

Drawing is a big part of the creative process and each design is carefully thought out, usually the result of several drawings of the same subject. These ideas are then translated onto the lino.

Most prints have been made by the reduction method. Colour is applied using a roller, the paper is placed over the block and pressure is applied to the back of the paper to lift the print.

Facebook: @ Paul''s Metal Crafting

Paul Thomas is a metal fusion artist based in Herefordshire. “ I design and make sculptures for the house and garden using recycled steel and metal objects. I began creating my pieces about 5 years ago when I retired, as a way of keeping my mind and body active. My ethos is for my pieces to be aesthetically pleasing while also being Eco friendly, I use 90% of recycled materials. I started out with small thing such as clocks but have now developed into the larger garden and interior design areas. I take commissions as well as creating my own designs.”

See Paul as a part of this year h-Art Week. Visit his website for further details about his work and events.

Solace in Wood was set up by Karl Watkins in 2023, designing and making unique turned and carved wooden objects ranging from sculptural items and hollow form vessels for luxury interiors to contemporary homeware. He creates objects that not only showcase the natural beauty of the material but also celebrate the organic and unpredictable nature of the wood itself. Karl particularly enjoys turning green (unseasoned) timber almost paper-thin and allowing the pieces to twist and turn naturally as they dry out to produce exciting and often unexpected results; sometimes adding colour and texture by ebonising or dyeing and wire brushing.

Giles Gallery

Kelly Davies Exhibition 2-23rd March

“A work of art, which did not begin in emotion, is not art.”

I believe Art, is Therapy. The movement and expressive gestures in my artwork, capture purpose and feeling. Flowing, sometimes measured marks, other times dramatic and raw. I see my art as a process of discovery, the journey being tangible, the outcome a by-product of my experience.

Phase one, is chaos, raw, naive, the loose, the free, the child playing. Followed by the exploration of space, shapes, colour, tone and textures, more intentional marks, reflecting and analysing, making sense of ones feelings. Finally, there exists clarity of refinement, sensitivity and subtlety.

“Art is coming face to face with yourself.” Jackson Pollock.

Hilary Nicholas Exhibition

30th March - 27th April

“I am a retired teacher who has always enjoyed painting and drawing. I now have the time to take my hobbies more seriously and get a lot of enjoyment from them. My style is quite loose and my preferred medium is Watercolour closely followed by pen and wash. Other mediums that I work in are pastel, charcoal and ink and I always enjoy something a bit “different”.
