GUernICa …a story of humanity. This is the final performance in the trilogy, Intention and Desire, which takes inspiration from Pablo Picasso’s master work – Guernica. While the previous two instalments focused on the idea of reality as described by Picasso (realistic space and characters in a disturbing feeling of chaos), this final program attempts to unveil the complete painting through the narrative of the bombing of Guernica with inspiration from Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet. While the three individual parts of the trilogy stand alone, they can also be seen as components of the complete Melbourne season.

always… Patsy cline by ted swindley
Presented by Hawthorn Arts Centre, Christine Harris and HIT Productions
Always…Patsy Cline is more than a tribute to the legendary country singer who died tragically at age 30 in a plane crash in 1963. The show is based on a true story about Cline’s friendship with a fan from Houston named Louise Seger, who befriended the star in a Texas honky-tonk in 1961, and continued a correspondence with Cline until her death.
Thurs 14 July 7.30PM
The musical play, complete with down home country humour, true emotion and even some audience participation, includes 27 of Patsy’s unforgettable hits such as Crazy, I Fall to Pieces, Sweet Dreams and Walking After Midnight. The show’s title was inspired by Cline’s letters to Seger, which were consistently signed “Love ALWAYS… Patsy Cline.”
hawthornartscentre.com.au or (03) 9278 4770
Tickets $47 full / $40 concession
Always…Patsy Cline has enjoyed great success all over the United States, including a successful run off-Broadway. It has also been enjoyed internationally by audiences in Canada, the UK and Australia. This new production directed by AFI award-winning Denny Lawrence stars Australian country music singing sensation Courtney Conway as Patsy Cline and popular stage star Mandi Lodge (Menopause The Musical, Just The Ticket) as Louise Seger. “Go to see Always… Patsy Cline to hear the memorable songs and you’ll discover a heartfelt story that will lift your spirits.” Chicago Critic 7

Frank is a cynical, burnt-out English professor, who drinks far too much whiskey. Rita is a hairdresser and a bit naive. She has however, a wonderful and indeed desperate thirst for knowledge and she chooses Frank of all people to introduce her to culture. Frank soon discovers that Rita has a lot more common sense than the so-called educated class within which he moves. He begins to fall in love with Rita for her zest for life, her almost childlike qualities and her simple, natural intelligence. But Rita’s life soon changes in this new environment. Two very different worlds then collide, merging to produce a charming human comedy and a wonderfully entertaining modern day Pygmalion.
Fri 14 October 7.30PM Tickets $47 full / $40 concession hawthornartscentre.com.au or (03) 9278 4770
Educating Rita was written by Willy Russell (the playwright of the ever popular Shirley Valentine) and premiered in 1980. The stage play and popular film version have entertained audiences around the world becoming a comedy classic. “…warm, funny and entertaining.” Herald Sun
