ARCHÈ

Presented by Hawthorn Arts Centre and Melbourne Ballet Company

In Greek mythology, ‘archè’ indicates the beginning; the principle from which the elements rise and the force that explains their birth and death. Spiritually, the figure of the swan is seen as a messenger of the gods and is associated with divinity itself.

Fri 17 July, 7.30pm Sun 19 July, 2pm

This production sees the company’s Artistic Director and Resident Choreographer, Simon Hoy, evoke the powerful symbolism and ethereal image of the swan within Greek mythology and Irish folklore.

Tickets $40 full / $34 concession / $29 16 and under hawthornartscentre.com.au or (03) 9278 4770

Drawing inspiration from classics such as W.B. Yeats’ ‘Leda and the Swan’ and Swan Lake’s ‘Odette’ and ‘The Dying Swan,’ Hoy has composed a marvellously powerful and uplifting program of contemporary ballet that is stimulated by the fundamental concept of evolution and rebirth. Set to music by Joan Jeanrenaud, Ennio Morricone and Ludovico Einaudi, the Melbourne Ballet Company’s latest production embodies much of the emotion, line and silhouette of the swan, with the choreography giving form and emphasis to the grace contained within each gesture.

Heralded by critics worldwide as a “lyrical tour-de-force” (The Guardian), this is your chance to experience Bob Kingdom’s “electrifying performance” (New York Times) as he brings Dylan Thomas’ last lecture tour to life in Sir Anthony Hopkins’ celebrated directorial debut. Playing a man who wrestled with the psychological conflict between creative talent and self-destructive impulse, Bob Kingdom’s remarkable portrayal of this lyrical countryman is so heartfelt and authentic that audiences have sworn it was the poet himself on stage. Over 80,000 people worldwide have enjoyed this critically acclaimed production that has included sell out seasons at London’s Lyric Hammersmith, Off Broadway, Edinburgh and the British Library. “I could have listened to his spellbinding, word wizardry for hours” The Times (UK)

Reserved Seating Only

Presented by Hawthorn Arts Centre and Boxing Day Productions

The critically acclaimed, audience favourite comedy about life, love and… the AFL!

Tuesday 22 September 7.30pm

Our great game viewed by an unlikely pair in the reserved section of a major football stadium. This action packed play features real-life husband and wife team David Ross Paterson (Frost/Nixon, Benjamin Button, Chopper) as a loud, burly football fan, and Cecelia Specht (Criminal Minds, Castle, Neighbours) as a recently divorced football widow, who has claimed her ex-husband’s tickets as part of a messy divorce settlement.

Tickets $38 full / $32 concession / $30 groups of 8 or more hawthornartscentre.com.au or (03) 9278 4770

As a footy ‘conscientious objector’ she is blissfully immune to the attraction of the game and instantly locks horns with her ex-husband’s footy-mate who becomes her reluctant companion over four eventful quarters. They make a seriously mismatched couple with little to offer each other. Or do they? Reserved Seating Only brings the colour and controversy of football to the stage, along with a witty insight into the battle of the sexes set in the context of our national obsession with sport. “This feel-good show is also a nifty character study, a well-paced, no frills, value-for-money, fun night at the theatre.” The Sunday Age 6

NATALIE WEIR’S

Spend the night with the definitive seductress of the stage as she weaves her deliciously wicked enchantments through one of Expressions Dance Company’s (EDC) most loved productions.
