Welcome
It’s an eclectic range of experiences and memories that colour our society and this is reflected in our range of artistic expression. Our Season One program sews together moments of our collective history and we encourage you to look through an alternative prism to share someone else’s view.
Parents and children of the 1980’s will recall many robust arguments with friends and neighbours over whether the swimming pool was supposed to have blue or green jelly. We can’t wait to reminisce with you over the chip lip chook at Josh Earl vs The Australian Women’s Weekly Children’s Birthday Cake Book in February. It’s the last time Josh brings this show to Melbourne so make sure you don’t miss it. Melbourne’s inner east is well known for producing and nurturing some of Australia’s premiere classical music talents. It is also known for being steeped in formality and tradition. In March we present a new series, Future Classic, which throws the presentation of this genre offcentre featuring emerging chamber ensemble, anon. and Australian National Piano Award Winner, Alex Raineri. If you’ve never been quite game enough to see a Classical performance or you want to see something fresh, now is the time to dip your toes in.
In 2015, Australia marks the Centenary of our involvement in the First World War. IMPACT is a gripping one man performance that explores what it means to go to war today and provides a window through which to view our ancestors’ own reflections on what it means to put one’s own life on the line. Can we draw a parallel between the realities of war then and now? Kew Court House welcomes a fantastic celebration of contemporary music. The super cool James Macaulay Quartet, hosts a trombone jazz party that may as well be in your own loungeroom; Monique di Mattina reprises favourites from her much-adored Shaken not Rehearsed segment on 774 ABC and we are thrilled to have a special one-off performance championing the great, Sotiria Bellou with some of Melbourne’s most accomplished Rebetiko musicians. This program offers plenty for everyone to connect with and we look forward to welcoming you for another year of beautiful, challenging and straight-up entertaining performance. Enjoy!

Josh Earl vs. The Australian Women’s Weekly Children’s Birthday Cake Book Swimming Pools! Race cars! Steam Trains! Robots! Dolly Varden? The Australian Women’s Weekly Children’s Birthday Cake Book had it all. Australian mums fashioned entire scale model metropolises from the combined powers of sheer maternal dedication, Ita Buttrose’s cooking editor, and store bought sponges. In 1981, Lyn Earl purchased a book that changed the history of the Earl family forever. In 2009 Josh was performing a show in which he briefly mentioned this book. The reaction was like nothing he had experienced before and he promised to come back with a show all about the book.
Thu 26 - Sat 28 February 8PM Cost $28 Full / $23 Concession / $25 Groups of four of more kewcourthouse.com.au or 03 9278 4770
In 2010, Josh Earl was a highlight of the MICF Allstars Gala with his ode to the Train Cake and sold out his entire season, so after numerous requests to don the apron and bring the cake tins back to Melbourne one last time, he is finally coming doing it. After sell-out seasons across the country, the cake show is back in Melbourne for one last whirl! “You’ll want him to stay on stage for another hour as you realise his show is coming to an end. ****” Herald Sun

A recent Master of Music graduate, Sungpil performs actively within Australia and has been a qualified competitor in numerous international competitions, including the recent Leos Janacek International Music Competition (Czech Republic) and Aeolus International Competition for Wind (Germany).
At only twenty-one years young, Raineri has performed piano concertos with the Queensland, Tasmanian and West Australian Symphony Orchestras and has had several competition successes including first prizes in the Kerikeri International Piano Competition (2014), Australian National Piano Award (2014) and ANAM Concerto Competition (2014).
As an emerging creative force in Melbourne’s classical music scene, anon. collaborates with fashion, photography and design talents with the aim of creating an accessible concert experience for the modern audience. Co-founders Nicole Tj (piano) and Thomas Lo (violin) frequently work with top talents from the University of Melbourne and ANAM, and since their launch in mid-2013, have featured a diverse offering of piano trios, quartets and quintets. They are also featured regularly live-on-air on 3MBS FM. Piano Nicole Tj Violin Thomas Lo Clarinet Sungpil Lee
A passionate chamber musician, Raineri is the pianist and co-artistic director of the Brisbane contemporary music ensemble Kupka’s Piano. With a raft of collaborations under his belt Raineri has worked with some of the world’s most renowned chamber performers including Andreas Ottensamer, Brett Dean, Elison Ensemble, Ensemble Interface, Ensemble Offspring, Eighth Blackbird, Victoria Sayles, Ensemble Nikel, Speak Percussion, Kroumata Percussion, Greta Bradman, Richard Haynes, Jessica Aszodi, Tabatha McFadyen and Angus Wilson, among others. As if being prolific in the performance realm wasn’t enough to keep him busy, Raineri is also undertaking a Doctor of Musical Arts (DMA) at the Queensland Conservatorium of Music (Griffith University) and is a current recipient of a Griffith University Postgraduate Research Scholarship.

“A worthy subject matter. A performer with stage presence. Descriptive prose that, in itself, is sure to sicken and galvanise in roughly equal measure.” Stage Whispers “A dramatic and poetic piece of theatre that evokes disturbingly powerful imagery as this angry young man searches for peace of mind.” Heckler This performance is presented as a part of the Gallipoli and Beyond program commemorating the Anzac Centenary, marking 100 years since our nation’s involvement in the First World War.

James Macaulay Quartet Macaulay is original, passionate, uninhibited and on top of his game as a trombonist. Featuring as a part of The Monash Art Ensemble with Paul Grabowsky, The Horns of Leroy, The Steve Grant Quintet, Martin Martini, The Bennetts Lane Big Band, Allan Browne’s Sextet Nouvelle, The Lagerphones and The Australian Art Orchestra, Macaulay steps into the spotlight with his own group, the James Macaulay Quartet.
FRI 24 April 8pm Cost $25 All tickets kewcourthouse.com.au or 03 9278 4770
Connecting himself to a tangible tradition of Melbourne jazz, James likes playing with ‘old dudes’. He describes his own music as ‘straight ahead jazz in a free manner, with a strong element of groove’, and ‘not about girls’. He sees music as honest work, plays on the edge of his technique, and has a cool disdain for clinical displays of virtuosity. Instead, his practice more reflects the lost art of holding a record party for friends when you buy a new jazz record The quartet features the extraordinary Steve Grant (C.W. Stoneking, Black Arm Band) on piano, Tamara Murphy (Allan Browne, Murphy’s Law) on bass and James McLean (Marc Hannaford, Scott Tinkler) on drums.

Small Talk Puppets are usually aimed at children, but Lana Schwarcz prides herself on bringing puppets into the realm of thoughtful adult theatre. One of 2014 Adelaide Fringe’s Bank SA Support Acts, Small Talk is her brand new show for ‘not-children’. Part comedy, part puppet show, part hallucination, Small Talk releases the dark humour that exists in the worlds between real life and real crazy. Set in a Mothers Club for Inner Children, we meet four characters, each trying to overcome the realities of having a ‘difficult’ inner child. Lana’s solo puppet theatre technique sees her performing as a human character who interacts with her puppets while she is puppeteering them! It’s a rub your belly and pat your head kind of performance skill, but it enables her to create relationships with her puppets to craft a more multi-layered show.
Thu 7 - Sat 9 May 8PM Cost $25 Full / $20 Concession / $22 Groups of 4 or more kewcourthouse.com.au or 03 9278 4770 Devised and performed by Lana Schwarcz
Her last solo show was about old people, this solo show is about the “so young, they’re actually just a concept”. And after all, how do you stop an inner child from ‘chucking a tanty’?

Rebetiko: Celebrating Sotiria Bellou This concert commemorates the artistic and cultural contribution of one of Greece’s most influential and most celebrated icons, Sotiria Bellou. Often called the Greek blues, since like the blues, it grew out of a specific urban subculture and reflected the harsh realities of an oppressed subculture’s lifestyle, Rebetika’s lyrical content spans love, loss, drugs and heart-breaking tales. Traditionally the music of the poor and the dispossessed, it is the music of the people, celebrating the joy, the sorrow, and the difficulties of everyday life.
sat 23 May 8PM Cost $25 All tickets kewcourthouse.com.au or 03 9278 4770
Legendary Rebetika singer and performer Sotiria was famous for her deep voice, emotion and pride, her openness to life’s struggles which had touched the hearts and minds of a nation rebuilding from the post war devastation. This performance is presented by a unique ensemble of musicians sharing the passion and appreciation of the legacy of Sotiria Bellou. Featuring Stavrina Dimitriou, Achilles Yiangoulli, Dean Georgalas and Con Kalamaras
