The Meltdown

Marshall McGuire

It’s a bold, brassy, twangy steam train of bumping backbeats and swinging shuffles. Then there’s that voice, sweet as honey. The voice is soul, but it’s country too and something else indefinable; like you heard it before but don’t know where. A lifetime of writing and experience is condensed into a golden set of songs and a killer band, The Meltdown. Great vibe, great players, great sound, but it’s the songs that are king here.

Fri 8 Jul 8PM $25 single $69 three-show mixed bag

Harps have been around for thousands of years. And through the ages have continued to play a fascinating role in the history of music. From the mediaeval troubadours to the courts of Renaissance Italy; from the nineteeth-century parlour to the modern orchestra; from the solo recital to contemporary music, you can find the harp at every step of the way.

Sun 17 Jul 2PM $25 single $69 three-show mixed bag

Acclaimed as one of the world’s leading harpists in contemporary and baroque repertoire, Marshall McGuire studied at the Victorian College of the Arts, the Paris Conservatoire and the Royal College of Music, London. He has commissioned and premiered more than 100 new works for harp, and has been a member of the ELISION ensemble since 1988.

These guys have more than a bit of that Ray Charles country via gospel thing, with a taste of dirty blues in there too. Is it echoes of towns like Euroa and Avenel where the boys blew in from, or just artistic license? Either way, if there’s one thing that soul and country can both do for you, it’s songs about heartbreak. And yes, in advance, you’re welcome.

In this recital, 400 years of harp music is explored, from the early Italian variations of Frescobaldi, through the outrageous exploits of Nicholas Bochsa, via the impressionistic ‘nymphs and shepherds’ music of Alphonse Hasselmans, to a brand new work written for Marshall in 2015.

Barney McAll

Brendan Maclean

For this solo concert Barney McAll draws on spiritual harmonies he learned playing in the African–American church for a decade, blended with slow meditative ambiences, in a unique and uplifting experience. He will also be playing his self-made instrument ‘Chucky’ which adds ambient celestial textures to his unique musical palette.

Fri 12 Aug 8PM $25 single $69 three-show mixed bag

Grammy nominated pianist, keyboardist, composer and arranger, McAll grew up in Melbourne and moved to New York City in 1997 after being invited to join the Gary Bartz Quartet. Today he continues to tour internationally with Bartz, in addition to Fred Wesley and the JB’s, and Josh Roseman.

As an alt-pop dreamboat, Brendan Maclean started his career at the piano. With a vocal quality that will soften the hardest of hearts, the last few months have seen a stunning direction change for Maclean. Stepping away from the piano, the Sydneysider has drawn on his love of crisp Swedish production reminiscent of Robyn and Röyksopp; instant classics built on anthemic hooks, mammoth choruses and some of the finest bridges you will ever hear.

Sat 20 Aug 8PM $25 single $69 three-show mixed bag

Having been signed to Universal Music Publishing Group, Maclean has written quietly in studios alongside acts like Megan Washington, Ngaiire and Sam Cromack of Ball Park Music. This exclusive Melbourne show will meld together Maclean’s creative journey thus far; it’s simply Maclean, the songs and our theatre’s stunning acoustics.

McAll has also performed/toured with major US artists Kurt Rosenwinkel, Maceo Parker, Jimmy Cobb, Eddie Henderson and Dewey Redman, as well as leading his own ensembles.

Brendan Maclean is a rarity within Australian music: A full voiced, dynamic singer possessing an incomparable performance style accompanied by an educated songwriter’s mind. As The Age put it, ‘he’s an absolute complete package.’

House Party

Winter is Melbourne’s favourite time of year when the night time comes to life. House Party rises from the viscera of our little theatre to defrost the dance floor and shine an infrared glow on High Street. With three special events happening on the last Friday of each month through the chilly season, we are turning the venue on its head and presenting some of this town’s most exciting and diverse outfits. It’s all in the name of good art and a good time. House Party 1 Presented by Kew Court House

Quarter Street Inspired by the raw sounds of New York in the 1970’s, Quarter Street revisit an era where the music of the streets resonated with the voice of the people. Like many Latino-American migrants to Australia, the group’s parents fled the various coups and revolutions of the 70s and 80s, raising their children to the sounds of the Spanish language superstars of the era. Cuban brass virtuoso, Lazaro Numa, recently arrived in Melbourne and adds a taste of Havana to the underlying mix of classic Puerto Rico and New York styles. The boys grew up with salsa and now they’ve brought together an impressive unit of Melbourne’s finest Latin and jazz musicians together to light up turntables and dance floors worldwide.

Fri 24 JUN 8PM $25 single $69 three-show mixed bag

Formed in early 2011, Quarter Street combines the fresh energy and the skills of well-known established musicians. A dynamic live band with a driving rhythm section and heavy horn section, this vibrant group of talented Melbourne musicians are quickly making a splash in the Australian music scene.

Fri 26 AUG 8PM $25 single $69 three-show mixed bag

He and his family left El Salvador in 1987, searching for a better life. On arrival to our shores, brothers Willíam and Julio with their father José, began to recreate their musical identity and play the Mariachi music of their homeland. Their songs embody the heart of México, telling stories of yesterday, today and tomorrow.

It doesn’t stop there. Alongside Flare Dance Company this crew will have been working their glutes and pumping their guns over the few weeks leading up at the Court House in Afrobics Oz Style with Flare. Party Art Prize

Exhibiting alongside House Party during winter, the Party Art Prize offers and unparalleled opportunity for emerging and established artists to share their work on their own doorstep.

Susan Gamble

David Krsticevic

Susan Gamble’s artistic practice encompasses and combines the creative arenas of Fine Artist, Musician, Composer and Experimental Filmmaker. Gamble has a Bachelor of Performing Arts (Vocal Scholarship) MONASH, Bachelor of Fine Art in Drawing (Distinction) RMIT and Master of Arts in Animation and Interactive Media RMIT.

While studying in Florence in the 80’s David Krsticevic visited an artist’s studio/gallery. He experienced an epiphany: a moment of sudden and great revelation, which has made a profound impression on him. The artwork he saw were fashioned from discarded objects of no value had been transformed into something beautiful. Krsticevic had a Eureka moment when he stacked a glass plate on top of a ladder lying flat on the ground. This gave birth to the glass topped ladder coffee table design. He says “half the fun is sourcing the discarded items, storing and figuring out how to use them, friendly comments help!”

Works of paint, pastel and pencil applied liberally on the floor in an open wrestle somewhat akin to sculpture, between depicting the human form and pure abstraction, light and dark skin tones, passive and active physical states, the unity between and disembodiment of limbs.

Daniel Vesel

Neen Arthur

Daniel Vesel is a Melbournebased University Student, currently undertaking a Bachelors of Media and Communication at Swinburne University in Hawthorn. Here, audiences are faced with almost quite literally a blank canvas, and are therefore encouraged to create whatever they so desire.

Neen Arthur is an artist and art educator with a fascination for transforming something ordinary into something beautiful, including twisting rusty wires to create ‘With a Twist” sculptures. Always playing around with new ideas she is inspired by words and images of positivity, creativity and nature. She enjoys creating one-off originals and is constantly evolving her work with a new twist.

This installation artwork rejects the stereotypical notion that gallery attendants must only ever take a passive stance when observing the works of artists. Get in there and get involved, actively create and contribute to this world within a room.
