2016 MELBOURNE FRINGE AT THE BASEMENT @ HAWTHORN ARTS CENTRE CALL FOR EXPRESSIONS OF INTEREST Hawthorn Arts Centre is seeking expressions of interest from artists across the performing arts spectrum to be a part of a two-week curated Melbourne Fringe Festival season. For the first time ever, the venue will be an inner eastern hub for the Festival, presenting both a dedicated artistic program and daytime family program. This is the beginning of an adventure in Melbourne’s eastern region in the support of new and developing performance work. Having now been open for two years, Hawthorn Arts Centre has seen steady growth as a performing arts venue and offers a unique opportunity for artists to tap into a very diverse, growing and enthusiastic audience base whilst still being only 6km from the heart of the city. The support we provide • • • • •

The performance space rent free (80 seat studio space with raked seating). Basic technical equipment. Dedicated box office and pop up bar. Front of House staff. Season marketing campaign (overarching for entire HAC Melbourne Fringe Season) including development of plan, design and distribution of marketing collateral, inclusion on our website, e-news, social media channels, publicity support, general marketing advice.

What you provide • • • •

A performance season of between 5 - 10 shows within the curated program structure (to be negotiated) - please refer to program structure in the application form. Technical staffing costs. Additional tech equipment hire (if applicable). Show specific marketing plan development and delivery.

Show me the money The program operates on a 50% net revenue split (gross revenue minus ticketing fee and GST if applicable). There are no minimum sales targets to meet - income is retained from the first ticket sold. Ticket pricing is to be negotiated with the venue to determine the best outcome for both parties. Some fine print • • • •

Artists are required to use the in-house Hawthorn Arts Centre ticketing system. Artist need to finance and administrate their own Melbourne Fringe registration. Artists are expected to contribute to marketing and publicity. Season dates and times for successful artists will need to be negotiated with the Program Producer. Artists will not automatically be awarded primary requested dates and times so that overall program integrity can be maintained. It is assumed that applicants have the financial means to fully deliver their proposed project with the support provided as outlined in this document.

What we’re looking for • • • • •

Artistic integrity. Quality and creativity of ideas and concepts presented. Previous work of key artists involved. Ability to bring new or develop current audiences for the venue - for both adult and family programs. Suitability for the space. Presentations need to be able to work within a shared context i.e. shows that are light on tech requirements and able to be bumped in and out very quickly. Commitment and drive. Enthusiasm in working with us to create and develop an exciting and rewarding place for the support and presentation of independent performing arts in the innereastern region of Melbourne.
