HAPPY Y! DA H T R I B From Ella Enchanted and all your friends at OCT! Karla Arria-Devoe Gloria Bigback Rielyn Culver Makayla Edwards Jonathan Garcia Vivianne Jones Madison Penn Dylan Rousseau Kean Spencer Emma Stewart Jack Twining Freeman Avery Waterman

Message from the Artistic Director Welcome to Oregon Children’s Theatre’s 31st season and Ella Enchanted. This season you will meet many characters that are refreshing, delightful, and take a very different journey than you might expect. Ella Enchanted Ella is not your usual princess. In this story, Ella is challenged, but not helpless. She outsmarts her enemies; she doesn’t run and hide. She protects the Prince, not the other way around. She sets out on a quest to save herself instead of waiting to be saved. In the “year of the woman,” Ella is a champion. Naked Mole Rat Gets Dressed: The Rock Experience Wilbur, a naked mole rat, is confronted with an unexpected change: he tries on a hat. Breaking society’s rules and risking banishment and ridicule (because naked mole rats are naked, always, that’s the way it has always been), Wilbur finally finds himself; clothing makes him feel complete. This character is so much like the children we serve. They are all discovering daily what identifies them as human beings, and the fear, joy, and hope that comes with those discoveries. And it rocks. The Legend of Rock Paper Scissors These characters, never seen onstage before, individually set out on a quest to be bested, “to find someone who can defeat me.” They are legendary in their own environment: the backyard, Mom’s office, and the junk drawer. They embody a quest not to win, but to grow. In a world where winning is prioritized, these quests are hilarious yet profound in a Zen sort of way. Jason and the Argonauts Andy and Josh are the storytellers who portray every character in the play. They are at once adults and children. They turn paper boats and action figures into giant ships and heroic figures. They are both telling the story and existing in the middle of the action. In every sense of the word “play,” they play. The relationship between these two characters will be a joy to behold. Diary of a Worm, a Spider, and a Fly Besides the three title characters, there are three other characters: Ant, Butterfly, and Mrs. McBee. What I love about this mix of characters is they are all different species (some natural predators of the others). Yet their commonality— growing up—unites them. Each is different with different needs, backgrounds, foods, culture, and even language, yet they overcome those differences. They are a delightful mix that will make you laugh and sometimes even tear up a little. I know you will enjoy the characters at OCT this season. Thank you for choosing OCT!

PORTLAND’5 CENTERS FOR THE ARTS

Founded in 1988, Oregon Children’s Theatre (OCT) is Oregon’s largest nonprofit professional children’s theater company. OCT’s mission is to create exceptional theater experiences that transform lives. OCT annually reaches over 120,000 children, parents, and educators from more than 18 Oregon and four Washington counties. OCT offers a year-round Acting Academy for students ages 3–18 and the unique Young Professionals mentoring program. The company also offers a range of services to schools and the community, including teacher professional development, resource guides and suggested lesson plans, Loud & Clear (a public speaking workshop), an extensive outreach program, and student internship and apprenticeship opportunities. Under the shared vision of healthier kids and communities, Kaiser Permanente Northwest and OCT are delivering free Educational Theatre Programs to schools and community organizations in Oregon and SW Washington. This innovative collaboration helps catalyze healthy life choices. Through free touring productions, residencies, workshops and after-school programs, the Educational Theatre Program has served over 300,000 students since its inception in 2006. Oregon Children’s Theatre is a resident company of Portland’5 Centers for the Arts and a member of Theatre Communications Group, Travel Portland, and ASSITEJ, the international children’s theater association.

CURIOUS CRAFT

Magic Spinner You will need: Colored Paper Template (download from

www.artslandia.com/category/kids)

Scissors Metal Brad Markers Gems Glue

1 Print out the Magic Spinner

template from artslandia.com. Cut out the circle on the template, and use it to trace a circle of the same size on colored paper. Cut out the circle and one wedge from the colored paper to match the photo below.

2 Decorate the colored paper with

markers and gems. Write an action word in each section of the Magic Spinner template. Place the decorated wheel on top of the Magic Spinner, and then push the brad through the center of both.

3 Play a game with your friends! Say

someone’s name, close your eyes, and spin the decorated part of the wheel. Read the word revealed, and just like Ella, your friend has to do the action. Take turns and have fun! Send a photo of your Magic Spinner to submit@artslandia.com for a chance to be featured.
