Message from the Artistic Director The story of Wilbur,

it’s a small difference that feels absolutely right for him and his identity, but it is so different that his friends reject him. Does any of this sound familiar?

It is a simple story, but it resonates with me, and I hope it will with you.

The character of Wilbur resonates with me because many times as a child I felt rejected, shunned, and cast out. I was not as brave as Wilbur. I did not question the reasoning behind comments about my weight, my athletic skills, or my glasses. Wilbur asks a very simple and profound question: “Why not?” That one question changes his whole community’s point of view.

the naked mole rat, has fascinated me for years.

I discovered the picture book in 2010 when searching for new plays for OCT. I ran across the title in Chicago-based Lifeline Theatre’s season, purchased a copy of the book, requested the script, and ended up loving the story. Sadly, I was unable to secure the rights. I was disappointed, but hopeful that we would be able to present the story someday. Someday has finally arrived! Last year Seattle Children’s Theatre premiered a new adaptation written by the book’s author, Mo Willems. After reading this new script and listening to the music, I again fell in love with the story. Wilbur, our hero, is just like any other naked mole rat… until he discovers that he likes to wear clothes. For him

In a world of constant change, it becomes more and more important to ask the questions that may lead us to a new point of view or a new understanding of people who are different from us; a question that allows us to walk a mile in their argyle socks. Thank you for choosing Oregon Children’s Theatre, and have fun!

Stan Foote Artistic Director, Oregon Children’s Theatre

Oh, and that kid will probably have fun, too. There will be many performances of NAKED MOLE RAT GETS DRESSED: THE ROCK EXPERIENCE in the coming years, but this performance will be a special, magical, unique communication between the actors, the other audience members, and you. PORTLAND’5 CENTERS FOR THE ARTS

Founded in 1988, Oregon Children’s Theatre (OCT) is Oregon’s largest nonprofit professional children’s theater company. OCT’s mission is to create exceptional theater experiences that transform lives.

OREGON CHILDREN’S THEATRE STAFF

OCT annually reaches over 120,000 children, parents, and educators from more than 18 Oregon and four Washington counties. OCT offers a year-round Acting Academy for students ages 3–18 and the unique Young Professionals mentoring program. The company also offers a range of services to schools and the community, including teacher professional development, resource guides and suggested lesson plans, Loud & Clear (a public speaking workshop), an extensive outreach program, and student internship and apprenticeship opportunities.

Dani Baldwin, Artistic Director, Young Professionals Company

Under the shared vision of healthier kids and communities, Kaiser Permanente Northwest and OCT are delivering free Educational Theatre Programs to schools and community organizations in Oregon and SW Washington. This innovative collaboration helps catalyze healthy life choices. Through free touring productions, residencies, workshops and after-school programs, the Educational Theatre Program has served over 300,000 students since its inception in 2006. Oregon Children’s Theatre is a resident company of Portland’5 Centers for the Arts and a member of Theatre Communications Group, Travel Portland, and ASSITEJ, the international children’s theater association.

First commissioned and produced by Seattle Children’s Theatre. Script and lyrics by Mo Willems. Music by Deborah Wicks la Puma. Based on the book NAKED MOLE RAT GETS DRESSED, copyright © 2009 by Mo Willems, published by Hyperion Books for Children, an imprint of Disney Publishing. All rights reserved. Used with permission.
