Message from the Artistic Director Welcome to The Legend of Rock Paper Scissors! Like many of us, I grew
up playing the game, so when I found this title on the New York Times bestseller list, I was instantly intrigued. I immediately went to Powell’s Books, found a copy, laughed very loudly right inside the store, and drew some unwanted attention to myself. I brought it back to the office and laughed even louder, bringing more unwanted attention to myself. It is such a funny concept for a book; the book itself is beautifully illustrated and full of belly laughs. The rest is LEGEND. I did a little research and found that the game dated back to the Chinese Han dynasty (206 BC–220 AD). The first known mention of the game—known as shoushiling—was in the book Wuzazu by the Chinese Ming-dynasty writer Xie Zhaozhi (fl. c. 1600). From there, the game moved into Japan (jan-ken), Britain (zhot), France (chi-fou-mi), and America (John Kem Po). Rock Paper Scissors is epic in its historical evolution and how it crosses through many cultures. I have talked with
people who have learned the game in many languages, including French, Japanese, Korean, and Chinese. As well as being an international legend of a game, this production features a national partnership. The Legend of Rock Paper Scissors is a co-commission with our friends at First Stage Children’s Theatre (FSCT) in Milwaukee, WI. The playwright, John Maclay, was a resident artist at FCST at the time. The composer, Eric Nordin, has worked with OCT as a musical director for many projects. The result is what you will see on stage today! I think the collaboration has produced a musical that is as funny as the book.

Discussion Questions 1. What does “good sportsmanship” look like? Why is it important? 2. What are some ways to settle disagreements that don’t involve fighting or violence? 3. How do you learn from failure? 4. What is a legend? 5. What makes someone a champion?
Just like Rock, Paper, and Scissors, kids need opportunities to discover their inner warrior. Theater helps children in the battle for self-confidence.

about us Founded in 1988, Oregon Children’s Theatre
(OCT) is Oregon’s largest nonprofit professional theater for young audiences. OCT’s mission is to create exceptional theater experiences that transform lives. OCT annually reaches over 120,000 children, parents, and educators from more than 18 Oregon and four Washington counties. OCT offers a year-round Acting Academy for students ages 3–18 and the unique Young Professionals mentoring program. The company also offers a range of services to schools and the community, including teacher professional development, resource guides and suggested lesson plans, Loud & Clear (a public speaking workshop), an extensive outreach program, and student internship and apprenticeship opportunities. Under the shared vision of healthier kids and communities, Kaiser Permanente Northwest and OCT are delivering free Educational Theatre Programs to schools and community organizations in Oregon and SW Washington. This innovative collaboration helps catalyze healthy life choices. Through free touring productions, residencies, workshops and after-school programs, the Educational Theatre Program has served over 400,000 students since its inception in 2006. Oregon Children’s Theatre is a resident company of Portland’5 Centers for the Arts and a member of Theatre Communications Group, TYA/USA, Travel Portland, and ASSITEJ, the international children’s theater association.

Melted Crayon
You will need: Smooth Rocks Crayons (Try glittery ones!) Foil or Parchment Paper Sheet Pan Oven Mitt Towel
Let’s create! 1. Have an adult help you preheat the oven to 325˚F. Fold the towel several times and place it on a table to create a heat-safe space to work. 2. Line a sheet pan with foil or parchment paper. Place the rocks on the pan and put in the oven. 3. Heat the rocks in the oven for 10–15 minutes and then have the adult wear an oven mitt to move the warm rocks onto the towel. 4. While being careful not to touch the warm rocks with your hands, use your crayons to color each rock. Try different colors for interesting effects!
Email a picture of your rocks to submit@artslandia.com for a chance to be featured in our next magazine..

OREGON’S TOP-RANKED CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL. Children are our greatest gift. At Doernbecher, we built a hospital around that belief. It’s why we have more specialists than anyone else in the state. And we’re the only children’s hospital in Oregon to rank among the best in the country.
