APRIL/MAY 2018 • ARTSL ANDIA KIDS AT THE PERFORMANCE

3

Welcome to The Very Hungry Caterpillar Show!

Can’t pick a

“How do you select your shows?” is a question I am asked regularly.

favorite?

First, I need to define my search criteria. I need five shows that span an interest range of four to 14 years old. I look for at least one new work, one mega hit, and one important piece (content or provenance). Three pieces that are big enough for the 800seat Newmark Theatre; two pieces that are intimate enough for the Winningstad Theatre (only 300 seats). A mix of musicals and non-musicals. Pieces that appeal to today’s youth. Shows that employ diverse casts and designers and tell diverse stories. There are lots of puzzle pieces to put together for five shows. At OCT, we take great pride in bringing to our audience plays that no one has ever seen before. I search the internet for new books that might be great sources. I ask the young people in our Acting Academy classes, our Young Professionals Company, and in our audiences: “What are you reading right now?” I talk to my national colleagues about titles they might want to co-commission. Once I find a book that is perfect, I then start the process of getting the rights.

Photo: PDX Jazz

To find shows that may be more familiar, I start looking at other companies’ current seasons to see if there are any plays that leap out at me. I read scripts, listen to music, and ask my colleagues about their experiences producing their show. This process led me to Dallas Children’s Theater and The Very Hungry Caterpillar Show.

You support the arts. You want to help support the arts community as a whole. You could research, budget, write 100 checks to as many different groups. . .

I chose The Very Hungry Caterpillar Show because I thought it would be a great fit for this theater. The smaller size of the Winningstad Theatre offers opportunities for an up close and personal experience for our audience. A smaller cast size and more basic scenic elements are a plus because of the physical size of the stage. A space where the smallest members of our audience can have that “up close” experience. It is a non-linear process that is like a treasure hunt. I always hope to discover a gem or two!

PORTLAND’5 CENTERS FOR THE ARTS

Founded in 1988, Oregon Children’s Theatre (OCT) is Oregon’s largest nonprofit professional children’s theater company. OCT’s mission is to create exceptional theater experiences that transform lives. OCT annually reaches over 120,000 children, parents, and educators from more than 18 Oregon and four Washington counties. OCT offers a yearround Acting Academy for students ages 3–18 and the unique Young Professionals mentoring program. The company also offers a range of services to schools and the community, including teacher professional development, resource guides and suggested lesson plans, Loud & Clear (a public speaking workshop), an extensive outreach program, and student internship and apprenticeship opportunities. Under the shared vision of healthier kids and communities, Kaiser Permanente Northwest and OCT are delivering free Educational Theatre Programs to schools and community organizations in Oregon and SW Washington. This innovative collaboration helps catalyze healthy life choices. Through free touring productions, residencies, workshops and after-school programs, the Educational Theatre Program has served over 300,000 students since its inception in 2006. Oregon Children’s Theatre is a resident company of Portland’5 Centers for the Arts and a member of Theatre Communications Group, Travel Portland, and ASSITEJ, the international children’s theater association.

I am an old object, but I am still used today.

I am a tool used by beekeepers to collect honeycombs without being stung.

I hold something hot in the metal cone. Smoke comes out of the hole in the front.

Visit History Hub! Oregon Historical Society 1200 SW Park Ave. Portland, OR 97205 HOURS: Mon–Sat: 10am–5pm Sun: Noon–5pm www.ohs.org 503.222.1741

Answer: I am a bee smoker. Smoke hides a smell that bees give off when they sense something dangerous. Smoke also alerts the bees to a possible fire, so the bees eat the honey and get ready to flee. When bees eat honey, their bellies swell, and they cannot sting. A beekeeper then collects the honeycombs. 18
