A MESSAGE FROM THE ARTISTIC DIRECTOR by Dámaso Rodriguez

Welcome to Artists Repertory Theatre as we begin our 34th consecutive year of bringing Portland audiences world-class, intimate and provocative theatre. This also marks the beginning of my third season as Artists Rep’s artistic director. I find great inspiration in the spirit of the thousands of artists, stage crews, staff, board of directors, season subscribers, donors, volunteers and audiences, who have all played vital roles in our theatre’s more than three decades of continuous storytelling. Each of these contributors have conspired in their own wonderful ways to ensure that the show does indeed “go on”—no matter the obstacle. With The Understudy, playwright Theresa Rebeck presents us with a show’s insurance policy, or tool for survival: the understudy rehearsal. The play in this story is a fictional, recently-unearthed Franz Kafka masterpiece. But why must this show go on? The cynical view is that the show must go on because money will otherwise be lost, but that’s not what drives true theatre-makers to go to such lengths to ensure a play’s (or theatre’s) survival. I propose that such a question is an existential riddle. “The show must go on” in the same way that “life must go on”—the only way we can ensure that life has any meaning is if we all agree to act as if it does. “The show must go on” is proof that all theatre and storytelling is a metaphor for the act of living. This is heady stuff for notes before a backstage comedy, but it’s the depth beneath the humor that earns The Understudy its place at the top of our 2015/16 season. There’s a theme uniting this year’s plays, no matter how stylistically distinct or varied the subjects. From the upcoming must-see musical Cuba Libre to the absurd comedy The Skin of Our Teeth, each play presents us with characters facing and ultimately emerging through life’s obstacles—all while entertaining us in dynamically different ways. Of course, I hope you’ll join us this year as a subscriber and experience all of these extraordinary plays. In any case, I’m glad you are here right now and playing your part in making today’s performance “go on,” and I look forward to welcoming you back soon. Here’s to what’s ahead! Warmly,

THE UNDERSTUDY’S PLAY-WITHIN-A-PLAY by Jessica Evans Irvine, Publications Specialist

FRANZ KAFKA (1883–1924) Kafka was born in Prague to a Jewish family with German heritage. His childhood was bleak; his father was cold and domineering, and never approved of his son’s literary habits. As the oldest child and only son, Kafka was pressured to succeed. After finishing university, he began a career as a lawyer, writing in his spare time. The Metamorphosis, his most famous short story, was published in 1915. Kafka had many mental and physical health problems throughout his life—it is believed he suffered from anxiety and depression. He contracted tuberculosis in 1917, but the disease never fully left him and he died in 1924 at age 41. Kafka’s will left instructions to burn all of his unpublished manuscripts, diaries, and letters, but his friends refused to honor his wishes. The Trial and The Castle, which both inspired the fictitious play-within-aplay of The Understudy, were published posthumously. Kafka’s characters never give up hope. They accept that their persecution may never end; all they ask is that someday, it will be explained. Kafka’s writings play with perception and ambiguity. His main characters are stuck in absurd conflicts, but they never know precisely why. Everyone around them is either apathetic or violently aggressive. Despite these obstacles, Kafka’s characters never give up hope. They accept that their persecution may never end; all they ask is that someday, it will be explained.

DIRECTOR’S NOTE by Michael Mendelson I loved Theresa Rebeck’s play The Understudy as soon as I read it. Actually, while I was reading it, I found myself laughing out loud. There aren’t many plays I read about the work we do, as theatre artists, that strike in me such a surprisingly poignant chord. What hit me most was the universality of the story and the human condition Ms. Rebeck sets out to tackle: the need and desire to be seen. Acknowledged. Loved. I see myself in each of these complicated, sassy, straight-shooting, funny, vulnerable, passionate, compassionate, flawed, creative people you are about to meet. Jake, Roxanne, and Harry all feel unappreciated, used, and alone. They are all stuck in some fashion. Jake by his looks, Roxanne by her anger, and Harry by his ego. Immediately, I was caught by how true it felt to our work. The life of an artist is not an easy journey and not one for those who have a thin skin. It can be very rewarding, but has many pitfalls and setbacks that wound and sting.

However, like life, it is how we scale these walls and move through these seemingly insurmountable blows with grace that defines our individual humanity. This story might have played out in an office building or an apartment, indeed anyplace where we find people who have dreams that seem unattainable. However, it is here in a theatre, this familiar place, that we get to take this journey. The theatre itself is a character too, just you wait! At the very least, we all hope for a rich and textured life with friends and colleagues. Hopefully, we’ll find love along the way. These hopes are not unique to us theatre artists, but are universal. And in that vein, what a fantastic way to begin Artists Rep’s 2015/16 season—to be surprised, challenged, and laugh at ourselves a bit. Oh, and experience lots of heartache. That’s how we artists grow, you know, heartache and suffering…isn’t that how we all grow? Oh, and great joy.

PRODUCTION STAGE MANAGER

The Understudy turns the spotlight on one rarely seen aspect of theatre production: the stage manager. We interviewed Chelle Jazuk, one of our two Resident Production Stage Managers, about the art of stage management. ARTISTS REP: What drew you to working

as a stage manager? How did you get your start? CHELLE JAZUK: I started doing theatre at the tender age of two, and like many continued to pursue the life of a performer for many years thereafter… Later, I found my way to being an Assistant Stage Manager (ASM) on a project and pursued stage managing… [With stage management]I found my niche, and enjoy the experiences, challenges and joys this dynamic career encompasses. ARTISTS REP: What is the most random

thing a director or actor has ever asked for in rehearsals or performances? CHELLE JAZUK: Edible suppositories? Cat “brains”. There really becomes a point where you have so many random requests that you lose track…

ARTISTS REP: Stage management can

be incredibly stressful. How do you stay calm when it feels like the entire production is crashing down around you? CHELLE JAZUK: Eat chocolate. Dark chocolate. And breathe. Or if necessary, step outside where no one else is and let loose a guttural scream, then return as though nothing happened... ARTISTS REP: What is the relationship

like between stage management and actors during the run of a show? CHELLE JAZUK: Depends on the show, the particular SM team, and the individuals of the cast. The goal is always to operate like a summer camp, where everyone is having fun, taking care of their responsibilities, staying safe, and leaving each night with a big grin on their faces. ARTISTS REP: What is it like to manage a

stage crew as well as a full cast of actors? CHELLE JAZUK: Terrifying and exhilarating!
