DIRECTOR’S NOTES by Scott Palmer NOËL COWARD wrote Blithe Spirit in just five days, during the darkest, deadliest heart of the Second World War. It was an unrepentant success; running for nearly 2,000 performances in London where it broke all ticket sales records for the London Theatre, a record that it held for more than 30 years. But Coward was already enormously popular in both the UK and the United States by the time Blithe Spirit premiered, and his fame attracted other London celebrities, characters, and wannabes to him like moths to a flame. Among those drawn in by Coward’s gravity was one remarkable character that played an enormously important role in the creation of Blithe Spirit: Radclyffe Hall. Marguerite Antonia Radclyffe-Hall was born on the 12th of August 1880 at West Cliff, Bournemouth. At the age of twenty-one she inherited a large sum of money left in trust by her grandfather Charles Radclyffe-Hall. Radclyffe was a lesbian and she lived with the singer Mabel Veronica Batten, who was twenty-five years her senior, until Mabel’s death in 1916. Soon afterwards Radclyffe began a relationship with Una Elena Troubridge, a talented sculptor and high society staple. Although she had enough money to live in leisure, Radclyffe decided to take up writing and published several popular novels. In 1928 Radclyffe published her most controversial work, The Well of Loneliness, a tragic novel about the life of a lesbian, which conveys the message that lesbians cannot help being what they are and are unfairly persecuted by society. In the early years of Radclyffe’s affair with Una Troubridge, the two women began to develop a deep interest in the occult and, specifically, with American spiritualism – a psychic fad that had traveled to the UK from the United States in the early 1900s. (These infamous American mediums, with their brash person-
alities, uncouth accents, and theatrical styles are the inspiration for our portrayal of Madame Arcati!) Radclyffe and Troubridge believed that they were able to communicate with Mabel, and receive messages from her from the “other side.” The two women trained in psychic practice for more than 8 years and there was something serious and weighty in these experiences for Radclyffe. Coward spent time with Radclyffe starting in late 1923 or early 1924, and the two writers were ghostly influences on each other throughout their careers – with Radclyffe basing a number of her male characters after Coward, and Coward giving nods to Radclyffe in a number of his plays and one-acts. They shared a huge circle of friends, and Coward and Radclyffe spent time together at Coward’s country house, Goldenhurst, beginning in 1928 – at the height of the public furor over The Well of Loneliness, and during the height of Radclyffe’s training as a medium. It was during these visits that Radclyffe would provide Coward with the details of her supernatural exploits, of her hits and misses in seeking to contact the dead, and of her deep hunger for knowledge about the truth of life after death. Although it would be more than a decade before Coward turned his attention to Blithe Spirit, his own recollections indicate that he had been contemplating a play about super-naturalism, séances, and ghostly visitations for a long time. It wasn’t until the Second World War that he felt it time to return to the idea. And he did - with a vengeance. Underneath all of Blithe Spirit’s froth is a darkness, a bitterness, and a contempt that cannot be ignored. Coward despised convention: the conventions of heterosexual marriage, which are mercilessly lampooned in Blithe Spirit;
contempt for the restrictions of social norms and niceties, which are so brilliantly ridiculed in Blithe Spirit through an unashamedly frivolous disregard for the dead and their memory; contempt for fads like super-naturalism and the occult through the skewering of Madame Arcati, and by assuring us, at the end, that she is a sham. His contempt for gender stereotypes and his dismissiveness of the possibility of love between the sexes, shown so brilliantly in Charles’ complete lack of interest in his second wife, and his pronouncement to Madame Arcati that, although he is fond of his wives, he by no means ever loved them. Noël Coward also had great contempt for his own “friends,” their depth of feeling, their experiences, their styles of dress and speech, and their forced social interactions. He mocked their pain, and the ways they approached dealing with grief. He used Blithe Spirit to lampoon Radclyffe Hall, to mock her desire to reconnect with her dead lover, her professions of love, her desire to be accepted, and her yearning to be connected to the broader world. Coward himself said, “It is my considered opinion that the human race is cruel, idiotic, sentimental, predatory, ungrateful, ugly, conceited and egocentric to the last ditch and that the occasional discovery of an isolated exception is as deliciously surprising as finding a sudden brazil nut in what you know to be five pounds of vanilla creams.” There is a cruelty in Blithe Spirit, and a focus on the mockery of the frailties of human nature. Coward himself puts it perfectly and distinctly: “To take a gloomy view of life is not part of my philosophy; to laugh at the idiocies of my fellow creatures is.” Scott Palmer Founding Artistic Director
DRAMATURGICAL NOTES by Carlee Whalen BLITHE: (ADJ.) SHOWING A CASUAL AND CHEERFUL INDIFFERENCE CONSIDERED TO BE CALLOUS OR IMPROPER... In early May, 1941, at the seaside in the Welsh resort town of Port Meirion, actress Joyce Carey sat across from actor and playwright Noël Coward. As World War II raged on across Europe, they were lost in a discussion about his idea for a new play involving ghosts, a boozy British couple, and a seance. Just a few hours later they had come up with a title: Blithe Spirit. Coward went on to spend the rest of his holiday working tirelessly in front of his typewriter. Within just five days, he had a finished product — a product that would go on to grace stages all over the world for many years to come. “May ninth, the play was finished and, disdaining archness and false modesty, I will admit that I knew it was witty, I knew it was well constructed, and I also knew that it would be a success…” - Noël Coward Coward’s supernatural farce Blithe Spirit first premiered in London’s West End in the summer of 1941. Written as a distraction from the Sec-

ond World War, many wondered if it was appropriate to be producing a play about ghosts when so many were being haunted by the loved ones they were losing in the war. This didn’t stop Coward; in fact, it emboldened him. By design, the characters in Blithe Spirit are superficial and crass, undercutting any sense of tragedy surrounding death. From Coward’s perspective, you can’t feel sad for anyone in the story because none of the characters are redeemable in anyway. “You can’t sympathize with any of them. If there was a heart it would be a sad story.” Blithe Spirit was hailed as “one of [Coward’s] funniest gambadoes, completely unrelated to the world in which he is living,” providing a comical distraction from the surrounding horrors of the time. And though we no longer live under the constant threat of air raid sirens, Coward’s quite hilarious play is still enjoyed around the world today. Carlee Whalen Dramaturg

NOËL COWARD (PLAYWRIGHT) Born in 1899, Noël Coward was raised as a working class boy in the London suburb of Teddington. His father was an unsuccessful piano salesman with little personal ambition, often resulting in poor family finances. From a young age Coward possessed a natural intelligence; he was an avid reader and instinctive performer with an insatiable ambition to learn and succeed. Encouraged by his mother to attend a dance academy in London, Coward entered into the professional world of theatre at the age of 12. From this point on, his writing and acting career swiftly flourished and he gradually became acquainted with a different class of people. Coward’s presence in the public eye turned him into a celebrity in his own right across both the UK and USA. The media avidly followed and reported on Coward’s plays and public appearances, elevating his celebrity status significantly as his career continued to develop. Despite his high-profile persona and arguably lavish lifestyle, Coward was fundamentally a man who loved all artistic forms and possessed a work ethic like no other. He immersed himself in work from the age of 10. Consequently, Coward became known as ‘The Master’ by many of his contemporaries and fans. He was hugely prolific; his final verse was written only days before he died. A quote from Lord Louis Mountbatten on Coward’s 70 th birthday perhaps best sums this up: ‘There are probably greater painters than Noël, greater novelists than Noël, greater librettists, greater composers of music, greater singers, greater dancers, greater comedians, greater tragedians, greater stage producers, greater film directors, greater cabaret stars, greater TV stars. If there are, they are 14 different people. Only one man combined all 14 labels – The Master.’
EPHRIAM HARNSBERGER (STAGE MANAGER) Ephriam completed his Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree in Omaha, Nebraska at Creighton University. This is his thirteenth production with Bag&Baggage. Productions include: Death and the Maiden (SM); Charles Dickens…Carol (SM); Farndale…Checkmate Manor (SM); Spinning Into Butter (SM); Romeo & Juliet/Layla & Majnun (SM); Brontë (SM); Parfumerie (SM); The Drowning Girls (SM); The Graduate (SM); Coriolanus (SM); Emma (ASM); The Best of Everything (ASM); The Lady Aoi (SM); Othello (SM); The South Omaha Stories (SM/AD); The Spitfire Grill (SM/AD); The Tempest (ASM); Complete Works of William Shakespeare [abridged] (ASM); Titus Andronicus (ASM); Twelfth Night (ASM); Phantom (AD); Dames at Sea (SM); Almost, Maine (SM); Julius Caesar (ASM); and Comedy of Errors (ASM). Although he is usually found backstage he has also appeared onstage in Cabaret (as Emcee); Noises Off! (as Selsdon); and Urinetown (as Bobby). Ephriam is honored to work alongside the stunning company members of Blithe Spirit. When he is not wandering about the stage Ephriam also enjoys cooking, camping, hiking, and singing silly songs with his sisters. He would like to thank Bag&Baggage, Nik, Rosemary, and his parents. Jim has also taught technical theatre at PCC Sylvania and has held numerous administrative positions in theatre during his career. In his free time, Jim loves to travel, explore great food and enjoys working off steam swinging a German longsword or Military saber at his local HEMA gyms, Indes Western Martial Arts and NW Armizare. SUSTAINING SUPPORT The names listed below are our very first ever Bag&Baggage Sustaining Supporters - and you can join them! You probably know the model from OPB: these are monthly donations, in smaller amounts, that provide a nonprofit like Bag&Baggage with ongoing, consistent, and predictable support year-round. Donations like this mean that we can plan better: they help eliminate cashflow challenges, and they allow us to leverage larger donations and grants from trusts and foundations.
