W E L CO M E TO C L AS S I CA L B A L L ET ACA D E M Y WELCOME to Classical Ballet Academy’s fifteenth annual performance season! This week at the theater marks our fifteenth annual Spring productions. In order to highlight all dancers, we are pleased to offer four different shows this Spring season. Dancers in Cinderella auditioned in August and were accepted into Classical Ballet Academy’s Pre-Professional Program. After our annual Nutcracker season the dancers were cast in this full-length ballet. Dancers in our Contemporary, Modern, Fusion, and Jazz Pre-Professional Program were awarded parts in Visions. An Afternoon at the Art Museum is a charming production filled with dancers from Beginning Ballet through Level Four. It is impressive to see such young dancers perform this full-length children’s production. The Carnival of the Animals features all our littlest dancers, ages two and a half to six. This show will melt your heart and give you a glimpse of where the next generation of CBA dancers begins. During the past fifteen years, Classical Ballet Academy has grown from a ballet school with only three dancers to more than four hundred; despite our size, we take pride in maintaining a small-school atmosphere and offering an environment where dancers of all ages and ability are treated as individuals and artists. I am so proud of the way all the dancers at CBA have developed their gifts and artistry over this school year. They are the reason I go to work: their dedication, talent, energy, and passion make my job a true joy! Dancers

grow up at the school and then take flight into the world. Seeing their success and having them come back to spend time with us on the stage again is such a gift to me as well as to the younger dancers. Thank you to the CBA alumni and teachers who are with us this week on the stage and in the audience! Part of my mission at CBA is to help dancers appreciate the intense work and commitment required for this beautiful art form. It is essential for them also to appreciate all that their parents and families contribute to their dance education—and to the dance productions. Classical Ballet Academy strives to put on professionallevel productions using all student dancers and volunteers. I am deeply grateful for the CBA community. It feels like a large family that collaborates to create lasting memories as well as art. More than two hundred parent volunteers donate their time and talents to make these shows happen. Every year I am overwhelmed by the support and gifts I find among the students and parents of Classical Ballet Academy. Every day in the hallways of CBA you will find parents sewing, collecting names of program sponsors, brainstorming new props/sets, organizing carpools, writing checks, and going above and beyond for their children and for the other dancers at CBA. Many of the dancers attend classes five nights a week, and many of them and their families have sacrificed every Saturday and several Sundays to prepare for the performances. I would like to offer a special thank-you to all the Committee Chairs

OUR MISSION is to educate, inspire and transform dancers of all ages through the study of classical ballet and complimentary dance forms. Reshaping the mind and body takes discipline and strength. CBA is dedicated to helping each individual achieve this goal.

CLASSICALBALLET.NET

The graduating seniors have been such important people at the ballet school as well as in my life. I know you will go out and do amazing things in the world. Thank you for spending so many years at CBA. Your presence and positive impact will always be felt at the school. The staff at CBA is also exceptional. All the teachers put so much time, energy, love, and passion into everything they create. They inspire, choreograph, and train dancers year after year—they go well beyond “just teaching.” Their vision, choreography, teaching, and organization are amazing. CBA is a collective effort. I am humbled to work alongside such talented teachers and artists. In addition to the many dancers and families that make up CBA I would also like to thank my family and friends for all their support and love. I am so blessed to have true friendship and love in my life. We hope you enjoy the shows and experience the magic of dance. With utmost gratitude,

Sarah Rigles, Director

DIRECTORS SARAH RIGLES

Director Sarah Rigles has taught all levels of ballet in the Portland metropolitan area for more than twenty years. Sarah originally received her technical training at a small ballet school in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, directed by the renowned Ceci Klein. She then went on to train in the Vaganova method, accepted full scholarships to study at Pacific Northwest Ballet in Seattle, and, at the age of sixteen, accepted a full-scholarship trainee position with the Joffrey Ballet School in New York City, where she performed and assistanttaught. Her attention to detail and love for classical ballet has allowed her to stage and direct full-length ballets, such as The Nutcracker, as well as prepare students for ballet companies, colleges, prestigious summer programs, and year-round study, including American Ballet Theater, Ballet West, Boston Ballet, San Francisco Ballet, Kirov Academy, Pacific Northwest Ballet, HARID and The Bolshoi Ballet in Russia. She also works to prepare dancers for Youth America Grand Prix, the most acclaimed classical ballet competition. She has had many dancers place in the top twelve regionally and attend the finals in NYC. Her vast experience in the field, her passion for ballet, and her dedication to the art form make Miss Sarah the ideal ballet school director. Under her direction, CBA has become one of the largest and best ballet schools in Oregon.

FAC ULTY SISSY DAWSON

Contemporary Dance Director S is sy D awson h as studied dance in Portland since age three. While maintaining a primary focus on ballet in her training, she has also trained extensively in jazz, modern, West African, and contemporary dance under the guidance of Sarah Rigles, Candalee Wrede, Jason & Michelle Davis, Amy Bonaduce, DJ Rayley, Donnie Lewis, Sekou Walker, Claire Olberding, and many more beloved teachers. She graduated from the PreProfessional Program at Classical Ballet Academy at age seventeen and was asked to join CBA staff in 2010 and now manages all aspects of the school’s daily operations. She was promoted to Artistic Director of the Pre-Professional Contemporary, Modern, Jazz and Fusion Program in 2016 after officially joining the teaching staff in 2014. She choreographed and performed as a soloist with Agneiszka Laska Dancers until 2014 where she was able to perform with the Chicago Philharmonic orchestra in Chicago and tour internationally to Mexico and Poland as well as locally. She continues to dance and perform in Portland today. She has trained dancers for the prestigious competitions Youth America Grand Prix and New York City Dance Alliance where her pieces have received top scores and have moved on to finals in both competitions in New York City. She loves working with the dedicated students of CBA and her fellow teachers. Having grown up in this community, she feels fortunate to be able give back by helping foster the next generation’s development and love of dance. Being able to help young dancers grow and expand as people and artists is one of her greatest joys.

Classical Ballet Academy’s Original Production of

CINDERELLA CHOREOGRAPHY Sarah Rigles

MUSIC PERFORMED BY The Moscow RTV Large Symphony Orchestra & Guennadi Rosdhestvenski

COMPOSER Sergei Prokofiev

CINDERELLA STORY We are pleased to present an original fulllength version of the ballet Cinderella. There are many versions of the story of Cinderella (the earliest was written down in China in the 9 th century), and it has been the basis for a long list of pantomimes, operas, and ballets. The music of Cinderella, composed by Sergei Prokofiev to a scenario by Nikolai Volkov,

4

CLASSICALBALLET.NET

has inspired a great many choreographers since its inception. Prokofiev’s Cinderella premiered at the Bolshoi Theater in Russia on November 21, 1945, with choreography by Rostislav Zakharov. Classical Ballet Academy’s production has new and original choreography, sets and costumes.

The story of the ballet Cinderella is a familiar one. This ballet reminds us to be true to ourselves, that dreams will come true if you believe in magic, that good conquers evil, and that love will find its way. It fills me with great delight to have you enjoy this comedic ballet Cinderella. We hope you enjoy the show and find your “happily ever after.”

Classical Ballet Academy’s Original Production of

VISIONS DIRECTOR Sarah Rigles

CHOREOGRAPHY Gail Black | Sissy Dawson | Susan Fischer Nicholas Petrich | Lauren Layman

ARTISTIC DIRECTOR Sissy Dawson

VISIONS Welcome to Classical Ballet Academy’s Pre-Professional Contemporary, Modern, Jazz & Fusion showcase Visions. This showcase is inspired by the many artistic “visions” that our wonderful and talented teachers have created to share with you all this evening. We begin the program with imaginative pieces by Gail Black and Nicholas Petrich, our Jazz and Fusion teachers respectively. They continually

10

CLASSICALBALLET.NET

push students to reach outside of their comfort zone and find love within every step they learn. We move on to Lauren Layman’s ever insightful pieces set on the Modern classes. Her choreography challenges her students both physically and mentally. We finish tonight’s program with choreography by Sissy Dawson and Susan Fischer for the Contemporary classes. Together they create a space for

students to push themselves physically, find their artistic voice, and flourish not only as dancers, but as individuals. All of the teachers are incredibly proud of the dancers and the hard work they have put into their classes all year. The road to becoming an artist is long and winding with many bumps and detours. Keep going. Keep working. Keep dancing.

THE CHILD WITHIN CHOREOGRAPHY: LAUREN LAYMAN This piece is dedicated to the new life of Rosalean Jeanne Layman.

“There was a rose, that blushing grew within my life’s young bower; the angels sprinkled holy dew upon the blessed flower. I glory to resign it, love, though it was dear to me; amid thy laurels twine it, love, it only blooms for thee. There was a rich and radiant gem I long kept it hid from sight; lost from some seraph’s diadem, it shone with heaven’s own light! The world could never tear it, love, that gem of gems, from me; yet on thy fond breast wear it, love, it only shines for thee. There was a bird came to my breast, when I was very young; I only knew that sweet bird’s nest, to me she only sung. But ah! One summer day, love, I saw that bird depart! The truant flew thy way, love, and nestled in thy heart.” ~ Grace Greenwood
