WELCOME TO CLASSICAL BALLET ACADEMY WELCOME to Classical Ballet Academy’s fifteenth annual performance season! This week at the theater marks our fourteenth annual Nutcracker productions. In order to highlight all dancers, we are pleased to offer four different shows this holiday season. Dancers in The Nutcracker auditioned in August and were accepted into Classical Ballet Academy’s Pre-Professional Program and cast in this timeless holiday favorite. Dancers in our Contemporary, Modern, and Jazz Pre-Professional Program auditioned and were awarded parts in A Christmas Carol. The Children’s Nutcracker is a charming production filled with dancers from Beginning Ballet through Level Four. It is impressive to see such young dancers perform this full-length children’s production. The Nutcracker Sweet Suite features all our littlest dancers, ages two and a half to six. This show will melt your heart and give you a glimpse of where the next generation of CBA dancers begins. During the past fifteen years, Classical Ballet Academy has grown from a ballet school with only three dancers to more than four hundred; despite our size, we take pride in maintaining a small-school atmosphere and offering an environment where dancers of all ages and ability are treated as individuals and artists. Every year a new crop of dancers matures and takes on more challenging roles. The tradition and opportunity of performing in The Nutcracker is a memory these dancers will have for a lifetime. I am so proud of the way all the dancers at CBA have developed their gifts and artistry in just three short

months. They are the reason I go to work: their dedication, talent, energy, and passion make my job a true joy! Dancers grow up at the school and then take flight into the world. Seeing their success and having them come back to spend time with us on the stage again is such a gift to me as well as to the younger dancers. Thank you to the CBA alumni who are with us this week on the stage and in the audience! Part of my mission at CBA is to help dancers appreciate the intense work and commitment required for this beautiful art form. It is essential for them also to appreciate all that their parents and families contribute to their dance education—and to the dance productions. Classical Ballet Academy strives to put on professional-level productions using all student dancers and volunteers. I am deeply grateful for the CBA community. It feels like a large family that collaborates to create lasting memories as well as art. More than two hundred parent volunteers donate their time and talents to make these shows happen. Every year I am overwhelmed by the support and gifts I find among the students and parents of Classical Ballet Academy. Every day in the hallways of CBA you will find parents sewing, collecting names of program sponsors, brainstorming new props/sets, organizing carpools, writing checks, and going above and beyond for their children and for the other dancers at CBA. Many of the dancers attend classes five nights a week, and many of them and their families have sacrificed every Saturday and several Sundays to prepare for the

performances. I would like to offer a special thank-you to all the Committee Chairs and Head Volunteers. You amaze me with everything you do and give. The staff at CBA is also exceptional. All the teachers put so much time, energy, love, and passion into everything they create. They inspire, choreograph, and train dancers year after year—they go well beyond “just teaching.” Their vision, choreography, teaching, and organization are amazing. CBA is a collective effort. I am humbled to work alongside such talented teachers and artists. In addition to the many dancers and families that make up CBA I would also like to thank my family and friends for all their support and love. I am so blessed to have true friendship and love in my life. It fills me with great delight to have you begin the holiday season with Classical Ballet Academy’s winter productions of The Nutcracker, A Christmas Carol, The Children’s Nutcracker, and The Nutcracker Sweet Suite. We hope you enjoy the shows and experience the magic. With utmost gratitude,

Sarah Rigles, Director

NUTCRACKER NOTE 2018 The Nutcracker is a very old ballet and was originally staged at the Mariinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg, Russia, in 1890. It was not well received and was considered a ballet “produced with children for children.” In 1954 George Balanchine restaged The Nutcracker in New York City. This time people really liked it. When it was aired on television in 1957, the ballet became more famous than ever. In the 1960s small ballet companies started producing The Nutcracker. It is now the most popular and “staged” ballet in the world, and a beloved holiday tradition for many families. As with all of the classic ballets, there are social and political components that are offensive. The dance world is changing, but unfortunately classical ballet remains mired in a tradition that includes colonialism and racism. In the Second Act of The Nutcracker, Clara visits the Land of the Sweets, which traditionally includes “caricatures” of several different cultures. We prefer to make the Land of the Sweets a celebration of different cultures. CBA strives to prepare dancers for a professional career in dance, where they will need to be familiar with The Nutcracker, while also remaining cognizant of how encountering these stereotypes can be harmful to students and their families. CBA is committed to the ongoing challenge of finding the balance between preserving the art form and moving it forward into a more accepting, inclusive, and openminded space. This challenge is exciting and integral for ballet’s continuation and growth of this beautiful art form. Sarah Rigles, Director

DIRECTORS SARAH RIGLES

Director Sarah Rigles has taught all levels of ballet in the Portland metropolitan area for more than twenty years. Sarah originally received her technical training at a small ballet school in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, directed by the renowned Ceci Klein. She then went on to train in the Vaganova method, accepted full scholarships to study at Pacific Northwest Ballet in Seattle, and, at the age of sixteen, accepted a full-scholarship trainee position with the Joffrey Ballet School in New York City, where she performed and assistanttaught. Her attention to detail and love for classical ballet has allowed her to stage and direct full-length ballets, such as The Nutcracker, as well as prepare students for ballet companies, colleges, prestigious summer programs, and year-round study, including American Ballet Theater, Ballet West, Boston Ballet, San Francisco Ballet, Kirov Academy, Pacific Northwest Ballet, HARID and The Bolshoi Ballet in Russia. She also works to prepare dancers for Youth America Grand Prix, the most acclaimed classical ballet competition. She has had many dancers place in the top twelve regionally and attend the finals in NYC. Her vast experience in the field, her passion for ballet, and her dedication to the art form make Miss Sarah the ideal ballet school director. Under her direction, CBA has become one of the largest and best ballet schools in Oregon.

Faculty SISSY DAWSON

Contemporary Dance Director Sissy Dawson has studied dance in Portland since age 3. While maintaining a primary focus on ballet in her training, she has also trained extensively in jazz, modern, West African, and contemporary dance under the guidance of Sarah Rigles, Candalee Wrede, Jason & Michelle Davis, Amy Bonaduce, DJ Rayley, Donnie Lewis, Sekou Walker, Claire Olberding, and many more beloved teachers. She graduated from the PreProfessional Program at Classical Ballet Academy at age seventeen and was asked to join CBA staff in 2010 and now manages all aspects of the school’s daily operations. She was promoted to Artistic Director of the Pre-Professional Contemporary, Modern, Jazz and Fusion Program in 2016 after officially joining the teaching staff in 2014. She choreographed and performed as a soloist with Agneiszka Laska Dancers until 2014 where she was able to perform with the Chicago Philharmonic orchestra in Chicago and tour internationally to Mexico and Poland as well as locally. She continues to dance and perform in Portland today. She has trained dancers for the prestigious competitions Youth America Grand Prix and New York City Dance Alliance where her pieces have received top scores and have moved on to finals in both competitions in New York City. She loves working with the dedicated students of CBA and her fellow teachers. Having grown up in this community, she feels fortunate to be able give back by helping foster the next generation’s development and love of dance. Being able to help young dancers grow and expand as people and artists is one of her greatest joys.

NUTCRACKER STORY ACT I Finely dressed guests begin to arrive at a lavish Christmas party. Young Clara and her brother, Fritz, are bursting with excitement at the prospect of holiday treats to come. The festivities get under way but are soon interrupted by the arrival of a mysterious guest, Clara’s great-uncle Drosselmeier. Drosselmeier gives toys to all the children and entertains the guests with a collection of lifelike mechanical dolls. Saving the best for last, he presents Clara, his favorite niece, with a very special gift: a wooden

Nutcracker. Fritz snatches the precious new toy from his sister and carelessly breaks it. Clara’s friends comfort her as Drosselmeier does his best to repair the Nutcracker. After hours of dancing and celebration, the party draws to a close and the guests depart. Clara, unable to fall asleep, tiptoes out of her bedroom to check on the Nutcracker still by the Christmas tree. She falls asleep on the sofa and has a magnificent dream. The Christmas tree grows to an enormous height and soon the room is filled with

frightening rats and their Rat King. The Nutcracker, now life-size, arrives to protect Clara. He summons his soldiers and a battle ensues. With the help of the battle cats the rats are defeated, but the Rat Queen manages to stab the Nutcracker with her sword. While Clara cries over her fallen hero, the Nutcracker is magically transformed into a Prince. Snowflakes dance as the Nutcracker Prince pushes Clara through the Land of the Snow in a magical sleigh.

ACT II The Nutcracker Prince escorts Clara from the Land of the Snow into the Land of the Sweets, where she is greeted by dazzling Peppermint Ice Candies. Clara sits upon

a throne and is invited to behold the enchanting scene. One by one, colorful sweets, magical creatures from afar, and beautiful flowers swirl and dance before

her. When the performances come to an end, everyone waves good-bye to Clara, and the Nutcracker ushers her away in his magical sleigh.

A CHRISTMAS CAROL Our story begins on Christmas Eve in the center of London in 1843. As many are spreading cheer and goodwill, one wicked miser, Mr. Ebenezer Scrooge, mutters “Bah! Humbug!” to them all. Hating Christmas, Scrooge berates all those who cross his path—scolding

his lowly employee, Bob Cratchit, and criticizing his only living relative for caring about spending time with family. The worst of Scrooge is revealed when the recently widowed Smite, indebted to the miser, asks for leniency to afford his wife a proper funeral. Scrooge refuses, claiming

that Smite can be taken to debtor’s prison for all he cares. Smite’s daughter implores Scrooge to find compassion and love in his heart, but unmoved by the girl, the miser walks away, feeling no remorse. However, a surprise is in store for Scrooge when he arrives home that evening…
