WELCOME TO CLASSICAL BALLET ACADEMY Welcome to Classical Ballet Academy’s thirteenth annual spring productions. In order to highlight all dancers, we are pleased to offer four different shows this spring season. Don Quixote features dancers in Classical Ballet Academy’s Pre-Professional Program. Dancers in our Contemporary, Modern, Hip Hop and Jazz Pre-Professional Program will perform in Visions. Beauty and the Beast Children’s Ballet is a charming production filled with dancers from Beginning Ballet through Level Four. It is impressive to see such young dancers perform this full-length children’s production. The Petite Carnival of the Animals features all our littlest dancers, ages two and a half to six. This show will melt your heart and give you a glimpse of where the next generation of CBA dancers begins. During the past thirteen years, Classical Ballet Academy has grown from a ballet school with only three dancers to more than four hundred; despite our size, we take pride in maintaining a small-school atmosphere and offering an environment where dancers of all ages and ability are treated as individuals and artists. Part of my mission at CBA is to help dancers appreciate the intense work and commitment required for this beautiful art form. It is essential for them also to appreciate all that their parents and families contribute to their dance education—and to the dance productions. Classical Ballet Academy strives to put on professionallevel productions using all student dancers and volunteers. I am deeply grateful for the CBA community. It feels like a large family that collaborates to create lasting memories

as well as art. More than two hundred parent volunteers donate their time and talents to make these shows happen. Every year I am overwhelmed by the support and gifts I find among the students and parents of Classical Ballet Academy. Every day in the hallways of CBA you will find parents sewing, collecting names of program sponsors, brainstorming new props/sets, organizing carpools, writing checks, and going above and beyond for their children and for the other dancers at CBA. Many of the dancers and families attend classes five nights a week and have sacrificed every Saturday and many Sundays to prepare for the performances. I would like to offer a special thank-you to all the Committee Chairs and Head Volunteers. You amaze me with everything you do and give. The graduating seniors have been such important people at the ballet school as well as in my life. I know you will go out and do amazing things in the world. Thank you for spending so many years at CBA. Your presence and positive impact will always be felt at the school. The staff at CBA is also exceptional. All the teachers put so much time, energy, love, and passion into everything they create. They inspire, choreograph, and train dancers year after year—they go well beyond “just teaching.” I am humbled to work alongside such talented teachers and artists. In addition to the many dancers and families that make up CBA I would also like to thank my family and friends for all their support and love.

Food, beverages, cameras and recording devices are not permitted in Lincoln Performance Hall. Smoking is not permitted in the Performance Hall or in the building. Please silence all cell phones. 2 | Classical Ballet Academy

It fills me with great delight to have you join us for our productions. We hope you enjoy the shows and experience the magic. With utmost gratitude,

Sarah Rigles, Director

OUR MISSION is to educate, inspire and transform dancers of all ages through the study of classical ballet and complimentary dance forms. Reshaping the mind and body takes discipline and strength. CBA is dedicated to helping each individual achieve this goal.

DIRECTORS SARAH RIGLES Director

Sarah Rigles has taught all levels of ballet in the Por tland Metropolitan area for more than twenty years. Sarah originally received her technical training at a small ballet school in Coeur d’ Alene, Idaho, directed by the renowned Ceci Klein; she then went on to train in the Vaganova method, accepted full scholarships to study at Pacific Northwest Ballet in Seattle, and, at the age of sixteen, accepted a full-scholarship trainee position with the Joffrey Ballet School in New York City, where she performed and assistanttaught. Her attention to detail and love for classical ballet has allowed her to stage and direct over thirty full-length ballets, such as The Nutcracker, as well as prepare students for ballet companies, colleges and acceptances/scholarships to prestigious summer programs/year-round study including American Ballet Theater, Ballet West, Boston Ballet, San Francisco Ballet, Kirov Academy, Pacific Northwest Ballet, HARID and The Bolshoi Ballet in Russia. She also works to prepare dancers for Youth America Grand Prix, the most acclaimed classical ballet competition. She has had many dancers place in the top twelve regionally and attend the finals in NYC. Her vast experience in the field, her passion for ballet, and her dedication to the art form make Miss Sarah the ideal ballet school director. Under her direction, CBA has become one of the largest and best ballet schools in Oregon.

CANDALEE WREDE Assistant Director

Miss Candalee began her dance training at age four with Marcelle Renoux, founder of the oldest dance studio in Portland. Her training included both Royal Academy of Dance and Cechetti methods along with a variety of techniques. Miss Candalee’s dance studies were primarily in ballet and extensively in pointe and pas de deux. She also studied jazz, modern, folk, and theatrical dance. At age fourteen, Ms. Wrede was honored by becoming the youngest lead soloist for Renoux’s performing company, which allowed her to study and perform many classical roles and to learn the art of developing complete original story ballets. She was a dance major at the University of Oregon, and she has maintained a lifelong commitment to dance through ongoing

study and teaching of its different forms, theories, and methods. Miss Candalee began teaching in 1972 as the ballet mistress for the National Academy of Gymnastics, training both former and future Olympians. She owned and operated her own dance studio from 1981 to 1992. She established a Junior Ballet Company as part of the studio, and the members performed original ballets such as Pippi Longstocking and The Last Unicorn. She was granted an honorary teaching certificate from the State of Oregon when she designed and implemented a full dance and dance history program for Sam Barlow High School. Miss Candalee has taught at CBA for more than nine years and is the Assistant Director. She teaches, choreographs, and mentors the staff at CBA. She hopes to promote a long legacy of dance training for the younger and very talented generation of dancers and studio owners in the Portland area.

SISSY DAWSON

Artistic Director of the PreProfessional Contemporary Program, Office Manager

Sissy Dawson has studied dance in Portland since age 3. While maintaining a primary focus on ballet, she has also trained extensively in jazz, modern, West African, and contemporary dance. She graduated from the Pre-Professional Program at Classical Ballet Academy at age seventeen and was asked to join CBA staff in 2010. She was promoted to Artistic Director of the Pre-Professional Contemporary, Modern, Jazz and Hip Hop Program in 2016, after teaching Contemporary for two years. She choreographed and performed as a soloist with Agneiszka Laska Dancers from until 2014. She also performed in ALD’s Rite of Spring with the Chicago Philharmonic Orchestra in Chicago and Broken Flowers internationally in Mexico and Poland. She is currently dancing with Wild Rumpus Jazz Co. Sissy recently directed her first full-length production A Christmas Carol for CBA’s Pre-Professional Contemporary, Modern and Jazz classes. She loves working with the dedicated students of CBA and her fellow teachers. Having grown up in this community, she feels fortunate to give back by helping foster the next generation’s development and love of dance.

DON QUIXOTE ARTISTIC DIRECTOR Sarah Rigles

COMPOSER Ludwig Minkus

DON QUIXOTE SYNOPSIS

PROLOGUE Driven by the vision of Dulcinea, the tarnished, yet inspired, Don Quixote begins his adventures with his trusty squire Sancho Panza in tow.

ACT I

BARCELONA, SPAIN (VILLAGE)

Kitri, Lorenzo’s daughter, is in love with Basilio the barber. Much to her chagrin, she learns of her father’s plans to marry her to Gamache, a foppish nobleman. Don Quixote and Sancho Panza enter the village, causing great commotion. Noticing Kitri, Don Quixote wonders if he has, at last, found his Dulcinea. Village dancers and a Street dancer perform. At the height of merriment, Kitri and Basilio, aided by their friends sneak off followed by Don Quixote and Sancho Panza. Gamache and Lorenzo attempt to pursue the young couple.

4 | Classical Ballet Academy

ACT II

ACT III

Don Quixote and Sancho Panza discover the fleeing couple in a friendly gypsy camp. All are inspired by the romance of the night. The Queen Gypsy, Graziosa, and her gypsy friends dance for them. As the vision of Dulcinea appears to him, Don Quixote realizes Kitri is not his “ideal”, but indeed belongs with Basilio. Suddenly the wind gains momentum. Don Quixote foolishly attacks a windmill, believing it to be a giant threatening Dulcinea’s safety. Failing miserably, he collapses into a deep sleep.

The villagers dance in the tavern. Finally discovered, Kitri is forced by Lorenzo to accept the attentions of Gamache. The thwarted Basilio pretends to end his own life. Upon learning of the farce, Kitri implores Don Quixote to persuade Lorenzo to wed her to the “corpse”. Instantly Basilio comes to “life”! Triumphantly, Kitri leaves to prepare for marriage while Don Quixote and Basilio salute Lorenzo and Gamache for stoically accepting the inevitable.

SCENE 1: GYPSY CAMP

SCENE 2: THE DREAM Don Quixote has an enchanted dream of beautiful fairies lead by the Queen of the Fairies and the Queen of the Dryads. In the dream Cupid allows him to see his beloved Dulcinea.

(INTERMISSION)

A TAVERN

ACT IV

THE WEDDING The village celebrates the marriage. Everyone dances to celebrate the wedding. Don Quixote congratulates the couple, bids them a warm “farewell”, and resumes his ever-lasting adventures.

ABOUT VISIONS Welcome to Classical Ballet Academy’s Pre-Professional Contemporary, Modern, Jazz, Hip Hop and Fusion showcase, Visions. The title of the performance is inspired by the many artistic visions that our wonderful and talented teachers have created to share with you this evening. We begin the performance with our youngest dancers in Fusion (an introductory class to Contemporary, Modern and Jazz) and move on to our new Hip Hop classes that

were introduced at the beginning of the year. Both classes are taught by our newest and coolest teacher Nicholas Petrich. Next the Jazz classes share excerpts inspired by the hit Broadway show Dreamgirls taught by the lovely and spirited Gail Black. The Modern classes taught by the always insightful and creative Lauren Michelle Sprague share human experiences when we face and overcome adversity in Bravery. Last we share Dreams by the Contemporary

classes with choreography from our outstanding teachers Susan Fischer, Kelsey Adams, and Sissy Dawson that will transport you to a world of creatures, fantasy, and self-exploration. We hope you enjoy the performance and want to let all of the dancers know that we are incredibly proud of all of them and are excited to share their talent and artistry with you.

DREAMGIRLS Dreamgirls is a Broadway musical, with music by Henry Krieger and lyrics and book by Tom Eyen. Based on the show business aspirations and successes of R&B acts such as The Supremes, The Shirelles, James Brown, Jackie Wilson, and others. The musical follows the story of a young female singing trio from Chicago, Illinois called “The Dreams”, who become music superstars. BRAVERY “THE SURVIVAL OF A REFUGEE” I have been thinking a lot about two dear friends I know: one an Assyrian minority immigrant from Iran and the other an immigrant from Afghanistan. Also recently the many unheard voices of Syria. Not only do their cries for help stand out, but their stories of determination and the will to live a life of freedom from religious, ethnic, socio-economic, or political persecution. I have never known a person more brave, courageous, and strong as those people who carry with them a story that changes us all. Ava Banks, Watson Bean, Aitana Bolanos-Hevia, Madeleine Burns, Esther Calvert, Grace Chadderdon, Chloe Comer, Emma Gall, Daphne Jilot, Kaitlin Nelson, Bella Ownby, Abigail Schroeder, Rico White “FINDING FREEDOM FROM A DARK PRESENCE” It takes bravery to face our own monsters or demons and to look them right into the eyes and do away with them. Sometimes we are our own worst enemy. It just takes the voice of another friend or two to stand with you to overcome life’s tribulations, while at other times it takes a legion or an army of voices to help you conquer fears. “WARSHIPS SAILING THROUGH FOGGY WATERS” The bravery of just one soldier can bind a group together like a brotherhood. Fratres means “brothers” in Latin, and it is the title of a 1977 composition by the Estonian composer Arvo Pärt in which he applies a “set of variations on a six-bar theme combining frantic activity and sublime stillness that encapsulates.” All humans wrestle with Arvo Part’s notion of a personal imbalance between instant and eternity; Pärt’s observation that ‘the instant and eternity are struggling within us.’ When I listened to this music I envisioned French fleets lost at sea and voyaging together into the unknown.
