CHRISTMAS REVELS
WELC OM E WELCOME TO THE 2018 PRODUCTION of The Christmas Revels in Portland! Our 24th year marks both a journey to Scotland and a journey to a new stage home, the Newmark Theatre. Important on so many levels, the move represents another strong step forward for this special community. As our 25th anniversary approaches we are thriving, and we owe that to your generous support. In this performance and in the coming year, we look forward to celebrating and sharing memories of the years past, while planning and anticipating the years to come. Revels is based on community, one built on the sharing of cherished traditions and rituals and your joyous participation. We make music together, we dance together, we laugh together, and in doing so we create a place where all are welcome—a shared experience that brightens the darkness and renews us for the coming year. Whether Revels offers you a respite from the bustle of the holidays, a reprieve from the clamor of daily life, or an opportunity to sing loudly and joyfully, we are so glad you’re here. So join with us this winter solstice season, as we raise our voices to cheer the return of the light. Welcome Yule!

HIGHLA N D VO YAGE / / P ART ONE 1. OVERTURE Portland Brass Quintet; Elias Alexander, Kevin Carr, Highland pipes
Composed by Betsy Branch for this year’s Christmas Revels.
2. MORMOND BRAES Many traditional Scottish songs of love and work refer to landmarks and towns. This lassie is leaving the Mormond hills (braes) in Aberdeenshire to find a new love in nearby Strichen town.
3. CUSTOM O’ THE YEAR Kevin Carr
A sonnet to welcome the winter solstice, written by Richard Lewis for our 2005 Christmas Revels.
4. THE SKYE BOAT SONG This song was published in Songs of the North in 1884, with lyrics recounting how Bonnie Prince Charlie was smuggled to the Isle of Skye after the Scots were defeated by British forces in 1746. The words we sing are those of a poem written by Robert Louis Stevenson in 1892.

The young 18th-century poet Robert Tannahill wrote the words to this song, filled with imagery of the Scottish countryside south of Glasgow. The tune is “Lord Balgownie’s Favourite.”
6. THE GUISE O’ TOUGH A shortened version of a 17-verse bothy ballad, a type of work song from the northeastern region of Scotland. A bothy was a farm outbuilding where the workers lived. The verses describe what it was like to work at the Guise o’ Tough farm.

7. PUIRT-À-BEUL (“TUNES FROM THE MOUTH”) Elias Alexander, soloist
A set of three Scottish Gaelic “mouth music” songs: “I’m Fond of Potatoes and Butter,” "The Spree We Had at Christmas,” and “Party in the Hen House.” In this traditional form of Celtic singing, the rhythm is more important than the words, which are sometimes just nonsense syllables.
8. CHILDREN’S SONGS AND GAMES Some Say the Devil’s Dead
Variations of this song are found in Scotland, Ireland, and Northumberland. The Four Tradesmen
A game song remembered by piper Martyn Bennett from his Scottish childhood. The Revels children and their director Regina Pirruccello devise all their own choreography. HIGHLAND VOYAGE

9. CA’ THE YOWES Mellea Blaser, Laura Chisholm, Jenna Dalton, Angela Truby, ensemble
A few verses of one of the best-loved songs ever published by Scotland’s national poet, Robert Burns, set to an older tune. Arranged for Revels by George Emlen.
10. THE GAY GORDONS An old-time dance popular at a cèilidh, a social gathering that may include music, singing, dancing, and storytelling.
11. AIR FALALALO Originally a Scottish Gaelic tune called “Air Fail A Lail O.” The English text is by Sir Hugh Roberton (1874–1952), conductor of the famed Glasgow Orpheus Choir. Arranged for Revels by the contemporary musician Anne Bingham Goess. “There’s a lilt in the song I sing, there’s laughter and love.”
12. CRAIGIEBURN WOOD Angela Truby, soloist
The forest of Craigieburn near Moffat was a favorite haunt of Robert Burns, who composed the poetry and possibly the tune of this love song.
13. THE THREE SISTERS AND THE THREE CROWS Three travelers arrive, and are invited to tell a Christmas Cèilidh story.
14. MORE CHILDREN’S SONGS & GAMES Coulter’s Candy
One Robert Coultart, a confectioner, traveled throughout the Borders selling candy and singing his sales pitch. The anise-flavored toffee put “meat on the bones” of the little ones. Bee Baw Babbity (Babbity Bowster)
Two different versions of this very old Scottish children’s song are combined here. The first is a counting game, and also a good song for dandling a baby on your knee.
15. TÀLADH CHRÌOSDA (THE CHRIST CHILD’S LULLABY) A Scottish Gaelic carol found on the tiny island of Eriskay, and published by folk music collector Marjory Kennedy-Fraser in the 1920s. It is sung at midnight mass on Christmas Eve in many churches in the Outer Hebrides. Arranged by Jeannette Sorrell, Sylvain Bergeron, and Betsy Branch.

16. LORD OF THE DANCE W. David Shepherd, soloist; Wilson Alness, Francis Attanasio, Russ Grandgeorge, dancers (alternating)
“Simple Gifts” is the Shaker tune that Sydney Carter used to set these modern lyrics. It was translated into dance using a compilation of traditional Morris Dance steps by Carol Langstaff, Martin Graetz, and Jonathan Morris, and is now a central feature of every Christmas Revels. We invite you to join in this dance and song in the lobby.

Dance, then, wherever you may be, I am the lord of the dance, said he, And I’ll lead you all, wherever you may be, And I’ll lead you all in the dance, said he.

HIGHLA N D VO YAGE / / P ART TWO 17. ENTR’ACTE Portland Brass Quintet
“Duncan Lamont,” a Scottish bagpipe tune by Donald MacLeod, arranged for brass quintet by Betsy Branch.
18. OIKAN AYNS BETHLEHEM (THE BABE IN BETHLEHEM) A processional carol from the Isle of Man, sung in Manx Gaelic. It begins with the words “Now keep we this festival with purest of hearts.” Arranged by Jeannette Sorrell and Sylvain Bergeron.
19. THE TRAVELERS MEET THE BLUE MEN OF MINCH The legendary Blue Men inhabit a strait in northwest Scotland called the Minch. Apart from their blue color, the mythical creatures look much like humans. They have the power to create severe storms, but when the weather is fine they rest just under the surface of the water. They can speak, and when a group approaches a ship, its chief rises up out of the water and shouts two lines of poetry to the captain. If he cannot add two lines to complete the verse, the Blue Men may capsize the boat.
20. TRAVELLER’S PRAYER During the late 19th century, amateur folklorist Alexander Carmichael collected poems, prayers, invocations, hymns, and charms in the Gaelic-speaking regions of Scotland and published them under the title Carmina Gadelica. John Renbourn (1944-2015), English guitarist and composer, adapted and set to music this prayer to the moon from that book.
21. ABBOTS BROMLEY HORN DANCE Betsy Branch, fiddle
This presentation was adapted in the 20th century from an ancient ritual for good luck in hunting the stag. It is still danced in the old lively style every September in the village of Abbots Bromley in England. Accompanying the dancers are the traditional folk fool, the man-woman, the hobby horse, and the boy archer, linking it with the mumming traditions of Old Christmas. The music is “The Wheelwright Robinson’s Tune.”
22. ROW ON Elias Alexander, soloist; George Kunz, Gerard Lester, Bill Ryan, Seth Truby, ensemble
The text of this song was discovered in the 1846 journal of a crewman aboard the whaler Three Brothers, out of Nantucket. It was first published in 1964 in Gale Huntington’s book Songs the Whalemen Sang, and the English musician Tim Laycock gave it a tune in recent years. Arranged by Elias Alexander, Colin Cotter, and Ryan McKasson.

H IGH L AN D VO YAGE // PART TWO 23. DA DAY DAWIS (THE DAY DAWNS) This melody honoring the dawn of the winter solstice was collected in 1822 in the Shetland Islands by Samuel Hibbert, who published it with this note: “This tune has long been consecrated to Yule day, and is never played on any other occasion.”
24. ALLELUIA Laura Chisholm, Azalea Micketti, Randy Orr, Angela Truby, Seth Truby, ensemble
A celebratory carol in jig time composed in 2011 by Jeannette Sorrell. It begins with the melody sung in plainchant style.
25. DONA NOBIS PACEM (GIVE US PEACE)
SING THIS ROUND WITH US!
26. SOME SCOTTISH DANCE TUNES Two strathspeys and three reels. Folk dance musicians love to skillfully string together favorite tunes into sets, for your dancing and listening pleasure.

HIGHLA N D VO YAGE / / P ART TWO 27. MORE CHILDREN’S SONGS & GAMES At the Back of Burnie’s Hill
An old Scottish children’s rhyme. Manx Lullaby
A cradle song from the Isle of Man. “Oh hush thee my dove, oh hush thee my rowan.” The Three Craws
A well-known song from the singing of Jimmie Macgregor and Robin Hall of Glasgow.
28. THE EIGHTSOME REEL A popular Scottish country dance, rooted in the French quadrille and the native Scottish reel.
29. SMEÒRACH CHLANN DÒMHNAILL (THE MAVIS OF CLAN DONALD) Elias Alexander, soloist
An 18th-century Gaelic song by poet John MacCodrum in praise of Clan MacDonald and the island of North Uist: “If every bird praises its own land, why then should not I? Land of heroes, land of poets— the abundant, hospitable, estimable land.”
30. GALOSHINS PLAY The core death-and-resurrection plot of the Scottish Galoshins play is shared with English and Irish mummers plays familiar to Revels audiences: a protagonist meets an antagonist in direct combat. One of the two falls and is subsequently revived by a third party who acts as a doctor. In our version of the “guiser” play, The Black Knight vanquishes a few Scottish Heroes, until The Doctor is called upon to revive the final foe. The traditional long-sword dance and its unique tune come from the tiny island of Papa Stour in the Shetlands. A highlight of the dance is the forming of the “lock” when all swords are interwoven and carried aloft.
31. RORATE COELI DESUPER Mellea Blaser, Laura Chisholm, Angela Truby, ensemble
William Dunbar, a late 15th-century poet and ordained priest, was employed at the court of King James IV of Scotland. One of his many works was the text of this Christmas hymn. The tune, composed by James Oswald in the 18th century, is “Strily Vale.” Arranged for Revels by George Emlen.
32. THE SHORTEST DAY Eden Francis or Linda Highman
A poem written for Revels by Susan Cooper in 1977, now an essential feature of Christmas Revels performances throughout the country.

CHRISTMAS REVELS
H IGH L AN D VO YAGE // PART TWO 33. SUSSEX MUMMERS’ CAROL This is a fragment of a carol now sung widely, originating in the great musical traditions of Sussex, England. In each of the nine American cities where Christmas Revels is performed annually to celebrate the winter solstice, this is the song of parting and blessing. The brass instrument arrangement is by Brian Holmes, with descant and final verse harmonization by Ralph Vaughan Williams.

JOE HICKERSON You’ll often see Revels donor Joe Hickerson at one of our pub sings, or any Revels event with a sing-along. Joe has lived the words of Pete Seeger: “Why should two sing alone, when one could sing together?” Joe grew up with the Fireside Book of Folk Songs and became a big fan of The Weavers as a teenager. As a student at Oberlin College he was inspired to form his own folk group, The Folksmiths. Joe has performed and lectured on folksong around the world and has recordings on the Folk-Legacy and Folkways labels. Joe was the Librarian and Director of the Archive of Folksong/Folk Culture at the Library of Congress for 35 years, where he met Revels, Inc. founder Jack Langstaff who “used to come in a lot.” Joe says, “Portland Revels is one of the high points of the arts in the Portland area.”
AMY POLO Whether leading a song at a Revels Flourish event, gathering Revels raffle prizes, cooking a special fundraising dinner, or contributing to the Revels vision at meetings, Amy Polo participates with passion. Amy has always loved early music, from her days as a student in Boston to singing in madrigal and chant groups. She began performing in The Christmas Revels chorus in 2003, singing in nine shows. Amy has been the leader of The Choristers, the children’s choir at Trinity Episcopal Cathedral, for 25 years. Amy says, “It has been a joy to share the experience of being in the Revels chorus over the years with both of my children and with so many wonderful, treasured friends. As a board member, it is a joy to share The Christmas Revels with a broader community as we move to the Newmark.”
