WELCOME TO Message from the Director Portland is a fountain of innovation and creativity. After being involved with Fertile Ground for seven years I know that now more than ever! But somehow I am continually surprised at the process that art goes through to arrive before the public’s eyes. This year’s crop of new work is a vibrant array of “acts of creation” by Portland artists, many of whom are producing their own work and taking a giant leap to share it with Fertile Ground audiences. Some projects that began their development at Fertile Ground have travelled beyond Portland to far-reaching venues and festivals in Canada, France and New York City. This year’s crop of theatrical expressions includes PDX Playwrights again with a dozen plus works and Artists Rep with a lunchtime reading series, dance works with the Groovin' Greenhouse and SubRosa Dance Collective, along with animation back in the Festival with HOMEBREW: A PDX Animation Showcase. We are sure to have a richly diverse Fertile Ground 2016! I am grateful for the Portland Area Theatre Alliance’s support of this unique program and thrilled to continue our partnership with Artslandia on this Festival Guide. Artslandia has become a vital voice for all things going on in the Portland arts scene and they continue to innovate on how to best serve the community. Fertile Ground is an incubator for new work in all forms of art creation— and that creation includes you. I invite you to join this creative process, this conversation between artist and audience, and explore what Portland’s lush arts scene has to offer. I invite you to get out there, take a chance, go visit undiscovered nooks and crannies of all sorts, expand your art-going repertoire and see theatre, clown, dance and more. Will you love everything? Maybe not. But most certainly you will feed your arts yearnings, grow your perspective and embrace your sense of adventure as you participate in Portland’s unique culture… “Grow” out on a creative adventure this January! Nicole Lane Fertile Ground Festival Director

FULLY STAGED WORLD PREMIERE Fertile Ground is ecstatic to offer festival-goers a wide variety of world premiere projects. Listings that fall under “Fully Staged World Premiere” typically mean the show is fully formed and ready for the stage, to include design and technical support (light, sound, set, costumes, props), so that audience members will have a world premiere theatrical experience. However, for some in this category fully formed means the producer/creator has developed a new show that they are ready to share with the public. Some of these shows have performance dates that extend beyond the festival weekends—check listings for complete run dates and try to catch them all.

DANCE Dance and theatre performances share common (fertile) ground in their development process and often in their form and presentation. Although founded in the theatre arts, Fertile Ground is an opportunity for audiences to experience a diversity in the Arts. This year, we are delighted to offer once again the wide variety of companies and choreographers who make up the Polaris Dance Theatre’s Groovin' Greenhouse, as well as welcome back SubRosa Dance Collective.

FERTILE GROUND: A CITY-WIDE FESTIVAL OF NEW WORKS

WORKSHOP These projects are not quite ready to premiere, but are straining to be on their feet in front of an audience in a big way. These workshop productions are a wonderful opportunity to see a piece that is on the road to completion and perhaps lend your thoughts to its end product. Workshop performances are striving to get ready for the next step in the process toward a world premiere.

STAGED READING Most works of theatre have a multi-stage journey before they hit the stage as a world premiere; a staged reading is one point in that trajectory. More than a script reading, a staged reading involves actors bringing a script to life with stage movement (blocking) and sometimes working through some design and technical ideas.

READING Take a chance! Come listen in as a playwright, with professional actors, shares the dialogue of a script with an audience—often for the first time, sometimes with fresh revisions, and always seeking input. This is your opportunity to participate in the development of a play. These readings often feature some of Portland’s best playwrights and actors, and will give you a unique glimpse into the plays that will grace our stages of the future.

The Yellow Wallpaper

By Sue Mach Conceived by Grace Carter Directed by Philip Cuomo FESTIVAL DATES: Jan 21, 22, 23, 28, 29, 30 @ 7:30pm; Jan 24, 31 @ 2:00pm ADDITIONAL RUN DATES: Jan 15, 16 @ 7:30pm; Jan 17 @ 2:00pm; Feb 4, 5, 6 @ 7:30pm VENUE: CoHo Theatre 2257 NW Raleigh St. TICKETS: $28; $22.50 over 65/under 30; $17.50 Thrifty Thursday PURCHASE TICKETS: cohoproductions.org, 503.220.2646 The new expressionistic performance adaptation of The Yellow Wallpaper by Sue Mach and conceived by Grace Carter is based on the American short story by Charlotte Perkins Gilman. The story follows Charlotte, a woman confined to a single bedroom for three months in 1890—a “rest cure” for her postpartum depression. Isolated and under-stimulated, Charlotte turns to an interior world of imagination, obsessing on the room’s ghastly wallpaper, until a trapped woman appears to her in the pattern. This multidisciplinary installation descends to Charlotte’s inner landscape, following her “mad” journey through constraint, to creativity, transformation and freedom. This world premiere co-production features performances by Grace Carter, Christy Bigelow and Chris Harder as part of CoHo’s 20th Season: Great Journeys in Small Spaces. “Mach’s plays, tackle dense social and political issues with the clarion voice of both a teacher and a formidable storyteller.” –Portland Monthly. “Gripping…defies dramatic conventions… tantalizingly elusive.” –The Oregonian of Carter’s 4.48 Psychosis.

THEATRE WORKSHOP Whink Productions presents

Buried Fire

Music & Lyrics by Dave Fleschner Book by Wayne Harrel Directed by Judy Straalsund FESTIVAL DATES: Jan 21, 22 @ 7:30pm (Michelle’s Pianos) ADDITIONAL RUN DATE: Jan. 20 @ 7:30pm (O’Connor’s Vault)

VENUES: Michelle’s Pianos 600 SE Stark St. O’Connor’s Vault 7850 SW Capitol Hwy. TICKETS: $18 advance/$20 at the door; $15 student-senior advance/$17 at the door PURCHASE TICKETS: fertilegroundpdx.org Buried Fire is a musical ride through love lost, gained and squandered, told through 16-plus songs from The Blues Cabaret’s new album “Where Love Begins.” It’s conceived by Dave Fleschner, composer, lyricist, arranger, singer and pianist from Portland, who’s toured internationally with Curtis Salgado and played with B.B. King. The story is by Wayne Harrel, two-time Oregon Book Award Finalist and author of the Fertile Ground favorite Remme’s Run. And it features a trio of amazing singers, headlined by San Diego’s Earl Thomas, a powerhouse, international vocalist and Grammy-nominated songwriter himself. Flanking Earl are two of the Portland Gay Men’s Chorus’ top soloists: sweetly dapper Jimmy Wilcox and salty Nashville sessions man Billy Mixer. There’s a rent party feel to every performance as they reminisce about That Night on the Rooftop, savor The Thrill of the Chase or ask the eternal question: Was this love written in the stars, or was it just tagged on a wall? Love is a Merry-Go-Round, writes Fleschner in this soulful new show, and Buried Fire is so worth the trip.

THEATRE FULLY STAGED WORLD PREMIERE The Broken Planetarium presents

Frankenstein: A Cabaret

by Laura Christina Dunn & Maggie Mascal Directed by Maggie Mascal Composed by Laura Christina Dunn & Maggie Mascal Choreographed by Rebekah Stiles FESTIVAL DATES: Jan 21, 22 @ 10:00pm; Jan 23 @ 8:00pm; Jan 24 @ 2:00pm ADDITIONAL DATE: Jan 20 @ 8:00pm VENUE: The Steep and Thorny Way to Heaven 1464 SE 2nd Ave. TICKETS: $20; $15 students/seniors PURCHASE TICKETS: fertilegroundpdx.org

From the writer and producers of last year’s The Snow Queen, The Broken Planetarium introduces a new allegorical folk opera based on Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein. The show takes on contemporary issues of female sexuality and what it means to be an artist, and tells the story through the subversive genre of cabaret. Set in presentday Portland, the story is told through mock documentary, opera-spiced eerie folk music, contemporary dance, and humor in order to convey a redemptive look at what it means to desire and create. By Lawrence Howard Directed by Lynne Duddy FESTIVAL DATES: Jan 23, 30 @ 8:00pm VENUE: Alberta Abbey 126 NE Alberta St. TICKETS: $15 advance; $18 at the door; $5 Arts for All PURCHASE TICKETS: portlandstorytheater.org, 503.284.2226 Since Portland Story Theater first debuted Shackleton’s Antarctic Nightmare, the story of the 1914 voyage of The Endurance and the epic struggle of her crew to survive after their ship was crushed in the pack ice of the Weddell Sea, the show has seen three sold-out runs in Portland and even played Off-Broadway in New York. This year, for the first time ever, we’ll weave in the harrowing story of the Ross Sea Party, 10 valiant men on the other side of the continent who gave everything they had to lay down a series of caches of food and fuel along the route, believing that Shackleton’s life would depend upon them. This is a story that speaks to something very deep within the human psyche. It’s about courage and fortitude and determination. It’s about a glorious failure. It’s a story that will renew your faith in the indomitable power of the human spirit. Meticulously researched and historically accurate, Shackleton, The Untold Story is the sixth installment in Portland Story Theater’s acclaimed Armchair Adventurer series, created and performed by Lawrence Howard and directed by Lynne Duddy. As writers, they have license to critique each other’s work, but because this is a class on memoir, what results is often a laser-like critique of each other’s lives—sometimes painful, sometimes sad, sometimes joyful, and often very funny. And because they are here to write about their lives, not just talk about them, they are charged with “coherence,” with making sense of love, work, art and aging, and, together, to explore what all this means at the intersection of gender, race and class. Can they be allies for each other on this writer’s journey or will hard words fly, old wounds fester, and women weep? And what does it matter? Talkback following performances facilitated by Age and Gender Equity in the Arts (AGE) and Professor Roberta Hunte.

After a successful year as one of Portland’s favorite underground storytelling outfits, the Affable Gentlemen are going public with this thrilling two-night extravaganza. Produced by Elaborate Alibi (36 Perfectly Appropriate Mealtime Conversations and #BadDecisions), this show combines the rising young company’s commitment to boundary-pushing content with classic vaudevillian flavor. Come Saturday January 30 for an all-ages night of music, magic, and unforgettable mustaches. Come Sunday January 31 for the "blue" version —loaded with new acts and lewd behavior. We'll hit the sauce and get saucy!

THEATRE You are Not My Enemy Bathtub Gin

By Miriam Feder FESTIVAL DATES: Jan 31 @ 1:00pm VENUE: Hipbone Studio 1847 E Burnside St., #104 TICKETS: $10 PURCHASE TICKETS: fertilegroundpdx.org ARMETTA—You Are Not My Enemy: This play is freely adapted from the traditional Japanese Noh Drama Atsumori by Zeami. Here, past meets present, the material world meets the world of the spirits, and old enemies are finally brought face-to-face on a lonely beach in a timeless moment of forgiveness and reconciliation. This reading especially emphasizes sound, both voices and live music, in celebrating a contemporary American response to the centuries-old spirit of Noh. FEDER—Bathtub Gin: Who is crazy? Who is wise? And what is Em supposed to think about the old woman who has invaded her very intimate space? A little friendly conversation, a bit too much advice and a trip to the library might be just what Em needs to land on her feet.
