WELCOME TO FERTILE GROUND Message from the Director
I am ready to spend 11 days exploring Portland’s burgeoning arts scene! Every year around this time, as I am putting this festival guide together, I get nervous. After nine years of this Festival, will artists and producers still want to put their work in Fertile Ground? Will it be any good? Will there be an exciting breadth of new work ready to be unleashed? Silly me. This is Portland. The secret place where innovative arts and artists flourish. Do we understand how lucky we are? This year’s crop of over 100 “acts of creation” are, more than ever, a vibrant array of Portland’s artistic impulses. This year, with 45 producers involved and more than 40 venues citywide, you’ll be exploring Portland through the eyes of artists who take giant leaps to share their work with Fertile Ground audiences. Fertile Ground Festival is a place where everything that can be created by Portland artists is fair game. And that’s very special. This uncurated festival is like none other, it offers artists and audiences the opportunity to explore the wilds of creativity and art-making in a plethora of genres and at every point in the process. In this year’s festival we will see theatre in its short and long forms, musical theatre, storytelling, circus arts, improvisation, animation, clown and a wide variety of dance disciplines. Once again, this year’s crop of offerings includes a dozen-plus works by PDX Playwrights, Artists Rep’s lunchtime reading series, Lake Oswego’s Lakewood Theatre with a handful of readings, lots of dance from Groovin’ Greenhouse at Polaris Dance Theatre, and, back this year, is an animation with HOMEBREW: A PDX Animation Showcase. I am grateful for the Portland Area Theatre Alliance’s support of this unique program and overjoyed to continue our partnership with Artslandia. Artslandia has become a vital voice for all things going on in the Portland arts scene and they continue to innovate on how to best serve the arts community. Fertile Ground is an incubator for new work in all forms of art creation—and that creation includes you. I invite you to join this creative process, this conversation between artist and audience, and explore what Portland’s abundant arts scene has to offer. I invite you to get out there, take a chance, go visit undiscovered nooks and crannies of all sorts, expand your art-going repertoire and see a little bit of everything—now’s your chance! Will you love everything you see? Maybe not, but I believe you’ll relish the expanse of artistic expression overall. Maybe you’ll be hooked on new work, become a new work aficionado and understand the process of creation a little better. Maybe you’ll just go out, take in a couple experiences and satiate your arts yearnings. Regardless, embrace your sense of adventure and be a part of Portland’s unique Fertile Ground. “Grow” out on a creative adventure, I’ll see you along the way!

FULLY STAGED WORLD PREMIERE Fertile Ground offers festival-goers a wide variety of world premiere projects. Listings that fall under “Fully Staged World Premiere” typically mean the show is fully formed and ready for the stage, to include design and technical support (light, sound, set, costumes, props), so that audience members will have a world premiere theatrical experience. However, for some in this category fully formed means the producer/creator has developed a new show that they are ready to share with the public.
DANCE Dance and theatre performances share common (fertile) ground in their development process and often in their form and presentation. Although founded in the theatre arts, Fertile Ground is an opportunity for audiences to experience a diversity in the Arts. This year, we are delighted to again offer the wide variety of companies and choreographers who make up the Polaris Dance Theatre’s Groovin’ Greenhouse, as well as Allegro Dance Company.

FERTILE GROUND: A CITY-WIDE FESTIVAL OF NEW WORKS
New “acts of creation” come in many art forms! This year, we welcome back HOMEBREW: A PDX Animation Showcase, which will bring viewers new works in the craft of animation. Get curious and see what these Portland artists are making for the screen this year.
WORKSHOP These projects are not quite ready to premiere, but are straining to be on their feet in front of an audience in a big way. These workshop productions are a wonderful opportunity to see a piece that is on the road to completion and perhaps lend your thoughts to its end product. Workshop performances are striving to get ready for the next step in the process toward a world premiere.
STAGED READING Most works of theatre have a multistage journey before they hit the stage as a world premiere; a staged reading is one point in that trajectory. More than a script reading, a staged reading involves actors bringing a script to life with stage movement and burgeoning some design and technical ideas.
READING Take a chance! Come listen as a playwright, with professional actors, shares the dialogue of a script with an audience. This is your opportunity to participate in the development of a play. These readings often feature some of Portland’s best playwrights and actors, and will give you a unique glimpse into the plays that will grace our stages of the future.
FESTIVAL ENRICHMENT This is your opportunity to hear first-hand from a panel of theatremakers about the process of getting new work to the stage. This year, Staged! will host an impressive panel of musical theatre experts to discuss their experiences in launching musicals all over the nation. Jerry Tischleder of Risk/Reward is back at Artists Rep with a host of independent theatre and arts-hybrid artists to talk about their creation process and what they have in the works next.

completely under water, New Yorkers grow gills and continue on as usual. At the top of one skyscraper surrounded by ocean, a group of East Village folk singers meet every week to share songs they've just written and opinions—many opinions—about the state of the world. From this group, an unlikely friendship between an aging male folk singer who lives above the water line and a young female submerged-songwriter is forged. When he begins to forget words, and then melodies, and finally even the way home, she stubbornly fights to keep things as they were. This imaginative folk opera takes a moving, yet playful, look at how we humans sing, argue, create, equivocate, and just continue on through times of profound loss.

New Frontiers in Vaginal Consciousness (VAGCON™) By Kelly Nesbitt Creative Support by Giovanni Fusetti, Joyful Raven, Jen Mitas, Anet Ris & Eleanor O’Brien FESTIVAL DATES: Jan 19, 20, 21 @ 8pm (at Lightbox Kulturhaus); Jan 27, 28, 29 @ 8pm (at SomaSpace) VENUES: Lightbox Kulturhaus 2027 NE MLK Blvd. (Jan 19–21) SomaSpace 4050 NE Broadway St. (Jan 27–29) TICKETS: $12 PURCHASE TICKETS: fertilegroundpdx.org Dr. Tallulah is a fiery Shamanic Healer, Sexual Activist, Zen Cosmetologist and Vaginal Consciousness (VAGCON™) Pioneer. Imagine a metaphysical cross between Archie Bunker, Dr. Ruth, Carol Burnett, Edith Bouvier Beale and Maria Bamford. VAGCON™ is a workshop/performance led by Dr. Tallulah that integrates group thrusting, fake orgasmic breathing, 3rd eye rubbing, traumatic storytelling (with a twist!) and consumption of powerful jungle medicine. We utilize Qi-Gong Gi-Long foam rolling movement techniques, laughter-based therapy, and reversed Gestaltian methods to emphasize the phenomenality of both client (Dr. Tallulah) and therapist (Audience) to safely cultivate attunement, freedom and reconnect with our VAGCON™. This is the work! Anyone interested in becoming more connected to the VAGCON™ is welcome—beginners, cismales, wounded healers, laymen, seasoned practitioners. No vagina is necessary to tap into the fold!
This original story taps into the zeitgeist of a New Age baby boomer generation and walks the line between satire and the performer‘s (Nesbitt) own vulnerability in her quest for intimacy. It‘s a combination of pratfall/seriousness and uses pathos/audience participation in her descent into the exploration of her sexuality that reveals her heart’s truest desire. It‘s poignant, raw, zany, hilarious, grotesque, absurd and brilliant. You‘ll laugh, sigh, possibly cry. For mature audiences.

As an amalgam of two such rich traditions, ATW seeks to bring the performer and the audience to the same floor in an intimate exchange. Mindful, heartful, depthful creation arises from the space between. The unknown becomes a friend, absurdity is worn well, fear is gently smiled at. The making-a-fool quality is always present when you stand at the edge of the empty space and…willingly take the first step. Barbara Dilley

By Mary Rose & Nathaniel Holder Directed by Sean Bowie FESTIVAL DATES: Jan 19, 21, 27 @ 7:30pm; Jan 20, 26, 28 @ 9:30pm VENUE: Headwaters Theatre 55 NE Farragut St. #4 TICKETS: Pay What You Are Able This year we’re thinking inside the box … A free box…You fill the box…We make the show. Yocto Theatre—the company that brought you Genuis and last year’s hit, CockTales, returns to Fertile Ground this year with Free Box—an object-based improvised adventure. The conceit is simple: inspired by the Portland phenomenon of free boxing, you—the audience member—is invited to bring an item to put in our free box. The show’s performers will have no exposure to the box before the show and will have no idea what’s in there. They will proceed to improvise a show using its contents. What’s it gonna be? A lamp? Textbook? Photo album? A Neil Diamond Greatest Hits Cassette? As each object is discovered, it will influence the course of the improvisation. No two shows will be the same as they will change based on the donations. Free Box will feature Mary Rose and Nathaniel Holder, two accomplished practitioners of Action Theater—a practice of improvisation that has its roots in physical theatre, dance and meditation. Oh, and we needn’t forget… at the end of the night, you get to raid the free box! Yocto Theatre was founded on one simple principle, “Play it forward…” with our philosophy rooted firmly in the principles of the gift economy. All are welcome. None will be turned away.

By Sky Yeager Directed by Jonathan Walters FESTIVAL DATES: Jan 19, 21, 27 @ 9:30; Jan 20, 26, 28 @ 7:30; Jan 22, 29 @ 4pm VENUE: The Headwaters 55 NE Farragut St. #4 TICKETS $15; $12 Students/Artists PURCHASE TICKETS fertilegroundpdx.org Last Dance is a new original piece, combining theatre, projection, dance and music that details one angel’s complicated and liberating transference into human form occurring in real time over the course of an evening. The play, written by Sky Yeager, is created/ performed by actor and butoh dancer Kat Macmillan and actor Jaime Lee Christina and directed by Jonathan Walters. Last Dance explores notions of suicide, agency in life and spiritual purpose. The character’s journey invites the audience to ponder what really happens on the “other side” of life after death or before birth. The question of “how precious life really is” is a theme woven throughout the thought process of this once-divine being incarnated in order to feel human love. The guardian angel that warned her not to take that leap is in tow, by turns vicariously living through her charge and also protecting and attempting to bring her back. Last Dance is an experience, which in the end encourages the audience to take hold of their own choices, suspend their beliefs and disbeliefs and live their lives to the fullest, trusting the divine wisdom in each and every heartbeat.

displacement. City planners now have a new, ambitious project in mind: a major expansion of Emanuel Hospital. As scores of additional homes and stores are razed, people in the neighborhood grow increasingly angry about their loss of community and their powerlessness in the face of it. An exception to this widespread sense of frustration is Ty King, an ex-Army sergeant and the owner of a local boxing club. Where others see disruption, Ty sees opportunity. Hoping to find lucrative work as the hospital expands and the neighborhood rebuilds, Ty uses all his savings to start a small construction company. Ty is dealing with other pressing matters as well, as his protégé Donnie, a young and promising boxer, prepares for an important upcoming bout. Donnie seems to be equally enthralled by the burgeoning Black Panther movement and Ty’s 17-year-old daughter, Ava. Ty views both fascinations with great unease, as he sees himself losing control over much of what is central in his life. Events come to a boil when the hospital expansion does not go as planned, with climactic consequences for both the neighborhood and Ty himself. A curated conversation will follow the Jan 22 matinee performance.

THEATRE/PERFORMANCE ART
Rogue Pack’s Stories from Maclaren is facilitated by playwright Francesca Piantadosi. Piantadosi conducts playwriting workshops @ Maclaren Youth Correctional Facility for incarcerated boys in the custody of Oregon Youth Authority. Ten boys, ages 12–24, will share their personal stories by writing an original and authentic piece of theatre. Piantadosi guides the boys through the scriptwriting workshop process. Each week their plays are read aloud and critiqued by fellow students. A dramaturg and director participate to discuss their functions in the theatrical process and provide feedback. In the rehearsal process, the boys collaborate with professional actors who will perform their scripts and bring their stories to life. Via videoconferencing from Maclaren, the boys will watch the performances and participate in audience talk-backs after each show along with the performers. Rogue Pack provides an open forum in which these incarcerated youth, who come from surprisingly diverse cultures and backgrounds, can reveal their challenges, hopes and desires. This is an opportunity for these youth to connect with the greater Portland community through artistic expression, resulting in cultural understanding between the playwrights and audience. Youth gain a greater understanding of their own cultural identities as the public realizes the challenges these boys face and are given an opportunity to offer their support in these troubled times.

A woman of her time, Sarah delayed motherhood as education, career endeavors, lack of sperm and lack of support all clouded her journey until it was almost too late. This solo-show chronicles the trials of one woman whose desire to become a mother during an age of liberation made her a rebel, a warrior, an anarchist and a science experiment. Told with heart-touching candor and witty humor, this story covers the difficult ground of family-making for the post-feminist female. “I always wanted to be a mother, and yet, becoming a mother was not really something our mothers wanted for us. During a time when the term “Planned Parenthood” has become synonymous with abortions and pregnancy prevention, how can our society embrace and teach young woman and men to truly think about and responsibly include family planning into their adult lives? I hope that in sharing my story, other woman will be empowered to share theirs.” –Sarah E. Shively

At a time when the edge of American settlement barely reached beyond the Appalachian Mountains, two visionaries—President Thomas Jefferson and millionaire John Jacob Astor—foresaw that one day the Pacific would dominate world trade as much as the Atlantic did in their day. Just two years after the Lewis and Clark expedition concluded in 1806, Jefferson and Astor turned their sights westward once again. Thus began one of history’s dramatic but largely forgotten turning points in the conquest of the North American continent. This monumental piece of American history will be told in two parts over the course of two seasons. Part One is about the journey to Astoria and Part Two (which will premiere in the 2017–2018 season) is about the establishment of Astoria, the first permanent United States settlement on the West Coast.
THEATRE WORKSHOP Steve Perkins presents
Men Run Amok (or It Takes Balls) By Steve Perkins & Jim Menges Directed by Steve Perkins FESTIVAL DATES: Jan 22, 23, 24 @ 7:30pm VENUE: Shout House 210 SE Madison St. Ste. 11 TICKETS: $10; $15 door PURCHASE TICKETS: fertilegroundpdx.org Men Run Amok (or It Takes Balls) is an evening of three short workshop performances about brotherhood, sisterhood and others caught in-between. Fairy/Tale is a modern fable of nature vs. nurture, of the lines drawn to survive and create family. The story by
Steve Perkins features two brothers comingof-age, one straight, the other not so much. In Marty’s World, an American expatriate happily drowning in Asia’s male dominated nightlife swims upstream against globalization and karma. Free market and morals collide, resulting in hilarious observations and sobering realities. Playwright Jim Menges has lived in Bangkok and worked extensively in the computer industry. Hard-learned lessons and words of inspiration for old boys and young men alike provide the framework for a man ought to know that…, an ensemble piece developed through improvisation from Steve Perkins’ book by the same title. All three plays question the binary path taken throughout history. From violence toward women and one another to institutionalized control, there can be no denying that men have run amok for quite some time. Let’s have that conversation. (No one ever speaks of women running amok.) “Balls!” said The Queen, “If I had ‘em, I’d be King.”

Now we are taking the opportunity to build something simple and new that we hope is equal parts poignant, delightful and quirky. Set in a chaotic post-Trojan War world, the play examines the lengths a group of Taurian women will go to shield themselves from the corrupting influences of patriarchal violence and unchecked sexual desire. Burrowing into the famously screwed up House of Atreus, Iphigenia 3.0 imagines a reality wherein Iphigenia was saved from sacrifice at the very last moment and welcomed into a community of chaste, religious women. All is well until Iphigenia’s long-lost brother, Orestes, washes up on shore and the estranged siblings instantly fall in love with each other. Along for the ride are Orestes’ sex-obsessed cousin Pylades, the ghosts of Agamemnon and Clytemnestra and a chorus of three Taurian women who are as winsome as they are bloodthirsty. As the characters fight to keep the doomed siblings apart, the stakes get higher and the body count rises. Iphigenia 3.0 is a thrilling, violent, meta-theatrical experience not meant for the faint of heart.

THEATRE STAGED READING Empire of Australia presents
You Can’t Get There From Here By Wally Zialcita Based on an alternate universe conceived by Richard Kotulski FESTIVAL DATES: Jan 28, 29 @ 12:30pm VENUE: Actors in Action 323 NE Wygant St., Ste 203 TICKETS: Pay What You Wish, at the venue Empire of Australia is an ongoing project that speculates an alternate history of the world. Working through a variety of media, including theatre, we imagine what might have been if the world had taken a different turn in the year 1151. You Can’t Get There From Here, a stage play set in an alternate present day, asks: “What would you do if you learned that there was an ideal version of yourself? Shouldn’t you want to be that person? Shouldn’t you be willing to pay the price?” The year is 2017, and Madigan is heartbroken. Her 17-year-old son Kiley, she insists, is not himself. Madigan grieves for what Kiley should have been: tall, clever, brave, and a pretty good tap dancer. The ideal version of Kiley, the son she has loved for all of his life, should have been a happy boy. Should have been, could have been, can be. A controversial new medical procedure promises to assuage the guilt of mothers everywhere, swapping one life for another. But the buy-in is a bit steep, and Madigan is having a crisis of faith. She needs a second opinion, an 11th-hour second opinion. Is anyone out there listening?
THEATRE STAGED READING Community Dream Productions with support from Third Rail Repertory Theatre presents
Blind
By Bonnie Ratner Directed by Bobby Bermea FESTIVAL DATES: Jan 28 @ 1pm; Jan 29 @ 7:30pm VENUE: Third Rail at Imago Theatre 17 SE 8th Ave.
TICKETS: $10 PURCHASE TICKETS: fertilegroundpdx.org Blind, set in the 1960s, is a play for our time, asking hard questions like “Who owns the neighborhood?” and “How can we truly see other as human beings when we’re unwilling to take a hard look at ourselves?” In 1967, Harold Stein commutes from his home on Long Island to his small shoe store in Bedford Stuyvesant, Brooklyn. Like other Jewish merchants in this predominantly black neighborhood, Stein operates his store behind a locked door, fearful of being robbed or worse. On Long Island, his wife, Sylvia, is also trapped—partly by her own demons, but also by a culture that denies her dreams. Stein has no answer for his wife’s troubles or the charged political climate. Sylvia’s answer is to blame the “other.” His daughter Susan’s answer is to accuse Stein of being a “ghetto merchant.” In Bed Stuy, Millie True teaches high school. Her son, Jimmy, is a Black nationalist like his father, Millie’s ex. Millie understands the pull toward that philosophy, although she leans more toward Dr. King’s “Beloved Community.” Millie witnesses a young black man trying to get into Stein’s store. She sees Stein deny him entrance because the merchants don’t let in black males by themselves. She intervenes, disrupting Stein’s fear and isolation. His ensuing relationships with Millie and her family, especially her teenage son, challenge not only Stein but also those of us who bear witness to his journey. Talkback facilitated by Color of Now following Jan 28 matinee.

Heaven Or Helen
By Vanessa Hopkins Directed by Vanessa Hopkins FESTIVAL DATES: Jan 29 @ 7:30pm VENUE: New Expressive Works 810 SE Belmont St. TICKETS: $10–$15 PURCHASE TICKETS: fertilegroundpdx.org There are so many women in history that have led extraordinary and highly influential lives who no one knows anything about. Helen Schucman, a spunky little Jewish lady with a PhD. in Clinical Psychology and a self
proclaimed atheist; In the mid '60s while she was a professor of Psychology at Columbia University, was instructed by a “Force” (she later believed to be Jesus) to write the book A Course In Miracles. She and her colleague, Dr. William Thetford, spent over seven years secretly committed to documenting what she was channeling. She struggled deeply during those years of dictation, fearing for her sanity as well as her reputation. When it was finally published, she insisted her name not be associated with the book until after her death in 1981. Heaven or Helen not only gives us the back story of her unique life but takes us on an intimate inner journey through her subconscious mind; through digital imagery, movement, original music and soundscapes— expect to be taken on a ride in and out of dimensional time and space.
