Did you know? The symphony orchestra is the largest and most exciting of all musical groups, with as many as 100 players. It is divided into four musical families called strings, woodwinds, brass, and percussion. Every instrument in the orchestra belongs to one of these families. In a symphony orchestra, the musical families are related to one another, just like cousins, aunts, and uncles. The orchestra is a big family of instruments playing together.

ART DEPT

Under the Same Sky K

evin Ledo’s mural Under the Same Sky is a message of unity and love brought to our city by the Paint Outside the Lines campaign. The project works with community groups to bring together artists of all different backgrounds, races, and religions to create art that reminds us that our differences are a reason for celebration and not hate. It’s essential that we keep this in mind in times like these when the people leading our country are making decisions that divide us instead of bringing us together. Students from David Douglas High School and rise (Refugee and Immigrant Student Empowerment) worked with the artist to create this mural of a happy little girl looking toward the sky, under which we are all equal and deserving of the same rights. Their messages about belonging and diversity are stenciled on the girl’s body in Arabic, Swahili, English, and Somali.

Know where this mural is located? Email the address to submit@artslandia.com with ‘Subject: Ar t Dept’ for the chance to win an Artslandia Box.

Portland’s Director of Recreation in 1946 was a woman named Dorothea Lensch. As someone very passionate about serving marginalized community members, she always looked for opportunities to bring Portland together in accessible ways. One of these ventures was the creation of the Junior Museum and Adventure House located in a mansion in sw Portland with exhibits on natural history, art classes, and even a “pet lending library.” The original Junior Museum was located inside of the Jacob Kamm house, which was the first mansion in Portland. The entire house was lifted from the ground in 1950 and moved to another location in sw Portland where it is preserved today. In 2001, the museum moved to a building in Washington Park that used to house the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry. Rebranded as the Portland Children’s Museum, the facility had the goal of familiarizing children with the fascinating world around them through interaction and problem solving. The museum now hosts 300,000 visitors each year and contains 13 exhibits including Outdoor Adventure, Twilight Trail, and Water Works.

Historic photographs for this series are provided by the Oregon Historical Society, a museum, research library, archive, and scholarly asset located in the heart of Portland’s Cultural District. CANCER TRIED TO STOP HIM. Bennett had other ideas.

Bennett was diagnosed with a life-threatening cancer at just two weeks old. The news was heartbreaking. The odds of survival were low. Your generosity powers this world-class care. With your support, there’s no limit to what Doernbecher can do. Please make a gift to Doernbecher today.
