Norman Huynh Norman Huynh has established himself as a conductor with an ability to captivate an audience through a multitude of musical genres. This season, Huynh continues to showcase his versatility in concerts featuring Itzhak Perlman, hip hop artists Nas and Wyclef Jean, and vocal superstar Storm Large. Born in 1988, Huynh is a first generation Asian American and the first in his family to pursue classical music as a career. Upcoming and recent engagements include the St. Louis Symphony, Detroit Symphony, and Grant Park Music Festival. He has served as a cover conductor for the New York Philharmonic and Los Angeles Philharmonic with John Williams. Huynh has been at the forefront of moving orchestral music out of the traditional concert hall. In 2011, he co-founded the Occasional Symphony in Baltimore to celebrate holidays by performing innovative concerts in distinct venues throughout the inner-city. The orchestra performed on Dr. Seuss’ birthday at Port Discovery Children’s Museum, Halloween in a burnt church turned concert venue, and Cinco de Mayo in the basement bar of a Mexican restaurant. Huynh currently resides in Portland, or, and enjoys skiing, board games, and riding his motorcycle. You can follow him on Instagram @normanconductor.

IN THE SPOTLIGHT
Meet Justin Fisher, the cover artist for this issue of InSymphony Kids. The Oregon Symphony selected Justin’s art from the many spectacular submissions of the Castles and Wizards coloring page in the Kids Activity Book. Congratulations, Justin! We hope you enjoy the show!
Tell us a little bit about yourself? My name is Justin, and I’m ten years old. I’m in fifth grade at Carson Elementary in Carson, Washington. I like baseball, Legos, dirt bikes, playing video games, and I think wizards are cool. Do you play any instruments, or would you like to someday? I’ve been playing the piano for almost a year now. I think that it’s the greatest instrument ever. How did you get the Oregon Symphony’s Kid’s Activity Book? My mom got an email and showed me the activity book. I really liked the Castles and Wizards page. What made you choose the coloring page of the wizard and castle to send to the Symphony? I thought that it would be awesome to play the piano inside a castle. I’d really like to do that someday. What’s your favorite color? What kinds of things do you like to draw? My favorite color is blue, especially iridescent blue. I like to draw wizards, swords, dragons, and knights. We hear that the Castles and Wizards concert will be the first time you see the Oregon Symphony perform. What are you most excited about when you think about going to the show?
Justin Fisher
I’m most excited to hear all the Harry Potter songs played by a real-life symphony. Which Harry Potter book is your favorite? I have to go with The Sorcerer’s Stone. If you could have any magical power, what would you choose? I would choose to be able to throw fire from my hands and to be fire-resistant. What do you imagine would be the coolest part about living in a castle? I think that it would be cool to have the biggest dining hall ever because I love food so much. What’s your favorite thing to do when you get to stay out past bedtime? My favorite thing to do is to take road trips up to Seattle with my family to watch the Mariners play baseball. We always have a lot of fun on the long drive and get home really late. .
