WHEN SARAH JANE AND I SAT DOWN TO DISCUSS THE STARLINGS’ FALL SHOW, WE KNEW THAT GOING BIG WAS OUR ONLY OPTION. AFTER ALL, WE WERE PLANNING NWCT’S 25TH ANNIVERSARY SEASON OPENER! Flying always helps me think, so I spread my wings for a swift lap around the building. Inspiration struck and Sarah Jane suggested we create a show about flight. I have to admit, I was skeptical at first (flying is “old hat” for us birds). But she persisted and, after some convincing, I saw the appeal for our human friends. And what better way to explore the skies than with the legendary Amelia Earhart, and stories from other aviators, astronauts, and pioneers in human flight?

QUEEN BESSIE Molly and friends CONSTELLATION Little One, The Starlings BIRD’S EYE VIEW The Starlings

We are delighted to say that for The Starlings and all the fearless fliers you’ll meet today, the sky is truly our only limit. NOW, WHO’S READY FOR TAKEOFF?

creative team Originally from Liverpool, England, SARAH JANE HARDY worked as a dancer and choreographer before turning to theater. She became the Artistic Director of NWCT in 2006 and has led the company through many record-breaking and award winning seasons, including the 22nd season which swept the regional Drammy and PAMTA awards with nine and seven wins, respectively. Always an avid supporter of new works, Sarah Jane has commissioned 18 plays and musicals for NWCT.

JOHN ELLINGSON is NWCT’s Associate Artistic Director. His early training began with clowning under the mentorship of Portland’s own Rusty Nails. Since then, John has developed into a gifted physical performer, musical theater actor, designer, puppeteer and clown. In addition to receiving multiple individual Drammy and PAMTA awards as both a performer and a designer, John’s artistic stamp has been on every NWCT production since 2006.

REECE MARSHBURN, Composer and Lyricist, (whose earliest

musical influence was the piano playing Muppet dog, Rowlf) has his undergraduate degree in Jazz Studies from Western Washington University, where he studied with jazz bassist and arranger Chuck Israels. After moving to Portland, OR, he worked as a pianist and conductor at Portland Center Stage, and provided arrangements to many of the top arts organizations including Portland Center Stage, Oregon Ballet Theatre, and The Broadway Rose Theatre.

MARIANNA THIELEN, Composer and Lyricist, attended the

University of Northern Colorado and graduated with a BA in Musical Theatre with a Voice Emphasis. She has performed in musicals with Lakewood Theatre, Broadway Rose Theatre, and works as a guest vocalist in a number of ensembles in Portland. Together Reece and Marianna write and perform under the name The Bylines.

Sarah Jane and John first worked together on a student production of Grease! in 2003. Since then, they have collaborated dozens of times in a variety of different ways— teacher/student, director/actor, producer/director, director/ designer, co-writers, and co-creators. Constantly challenging each other to think further and further outside the box, their creative partnership is the backbone of NWCT’s unique aesthetic. Sarah Jane and John concocted the idea for The Starlings over three years ago as they were looking for more ways to include puppets in the season. The idea caught on and grew quickly and before they knew it, their lives and NWCT was overrun with birds.

8 NW CHILDREN’S THEATER AMELIA EARHART’S FIRST FLIGHT

In June 2011, Marshburn and Thielen attended in the Johnny Mercer Songwriters’ Project. Shortly after, they recorded and released their first self titled album(The Bylines). In 2013, they won a Regional Arts and Culture Council grant to produce a live video and album which they released in 2014 (The Bylines Live). Meant To Be, a theatrical concert of all original material co-produced with Third Rail Repertory Theatre debuted in August of 2015, and was remounted in July of 2016. They have performed nationwide in venues form Los Angeles to New York City and opened for Randy Newman at the Britt Festival in Jacksonville, Oregon. They made their international debut last summer as featured performers on the Star Clipper, a tall ship that cruised out of Venice, Italy. After working with NWCT on the Starling’s debut show, Sleeping Beauty, last year and winning two Portland Area Music Theatre Awards (PAMTAs) for best original musical and best original song, they are grateful for another opportunity to join this fabulous flock.
