FROM THE DIRECTOR We’re big fans of Roald Dahl here at NWCT (we’ve produced Willy Wonka, The BFG, The Witches, and James and the Giant Peach!), so we were thrilled when Matilda the Musical became available! Dahl's writing respects the intelligence of children and rejects the idea that "older" equals "better". Matilda is a quintessential Dahl heroine—an initially unassuming young child who is surrounded by incompetence, cruelty, and neglect. She is also an avid reader and storyteller with a sense of justice so strong she has no choice but to develop magical powers to confront the oppressions which surround her. Matilda is unquestionably a departure from the classic American musical theater titles NWCT typically produces during the holidays. The music is modern, the plot is twisted, and the satirical, occasionally dark humor is decidedly British! Matilda was originally staged by the Royal Shakespeare Company, before premiering in London’s West End in 2011. It is firmly rooted in the broad, melodramatic traditions of British Panto, including a Dahl-esque take on the Pantomime Dame (Miss Trunchbull), a female character played by an older male actor. But in the end, this is not a story about how terrible grown-ups are, it’s about how remarkable Matilda is. Through her unflinching bravery and her insistence that she can make a difference, she inspires her generation to act with courage and commitment when things aren’t right and teaches them that they are the authors of their own story. I can’t think of a better story to tell right here, right now. Sincerely,

Sarah Jane Hardy Artistic Director of NWCT
