LETTER FROM THE ARTISTIC DIRECTOR

Oregon Ballet Theatre would like to express our most sincere thanks to our most generous sponsors.

Photo by Michael Slobodian

THANK YOU! DEAR FRIENDS OF THE OREGON BALLET THEATRE SCHOOL, Welcome to our Annual School Performance! This exciting performance is the culmination of a season of hard work and many hours of training – and we could not be happier to have you here to witness the growth in both artistry and talent of our students. As many of you know, School Director Anthony Jones departed the OBT School in February to take up the post of School Director at Ballet Arizona: we are so grateful for all he has done for OBT, and while we miss him, we also wish him the very best. One of Tony’s last duties here in Portland was the staging of master choreographer George Balanchine’s effervescent Valse Fantaisie, which we are honored to present in this performance. Full of the speed and daredevil technical prowess that characterizes the best of neo-classical ballet, Valse Fantaisie is a gift to both the students of our school and to you, our audience – one more reason to be grateful for the wonderful development of the Oregon Ballet Theatre School under the direction of Mr. Jones. We actually have so much to be grateful for – a staff and faculty that take pride in sharing their deep love of ballet with students; performance opportunities that include the chance to dance alongside OBT company members at the Keller Auditorium every year; and the chance to work with accomplished choreographers, such as OBT Resident Choreographer Nicolo Fonte, who taught and coached the OBT2 dancers in today’s Accidental Signals. Some of our teachers have trained generations of ballet aficionados. And who can forget how the OBT School students stole the show in Alice this February? This year was also especially noteworthy because OBT School student Finnian Carmeci was one of only seven Americans accepted into the prestigious Prix de Lausanne competition and was the very youngest finalist there! Our school has grown by leaps and bounds over the past four years, and we are poised for another exciting phase when new School Director Marion Tonner joins the OBT Family in June of this year. Marion comes to OBT with a wealth of experience as both a master teacher and an effective administrator, and I know that you will all welcome her when she arrives. Whether it is the formal classicism of our Don Quixote Vision Scene (staged by advanced teacher Natasha Bar), the spirited Satanella pas de deux (staged and coached by OBT2 Program Director Lisa Sundstrom), the works mentioned above, or our show-stopping closer A Grand Étude – created and staged by Elise Legere, Kembe Staley, Alison Roper, Peter Franc, Lisa Sundstrom, & Natasha Bar – we know you will enjoy the show today, and I hope you will also take great pride in the accomplishments of our wonderful students. Please also remember that it is only through your support that we are able to do so much – so THANK YOU!

TODAY’S PROGRAM OREGON BALLET THEATRE SCHOOL Presents the

ANNUAL SCHOOL PERFORMANCE Don Quixote Dream Scene CHOREOGRAPHY: NATASHA BAR after MARIUS PETIPA MUSIC: LUDWIG MINKUS, Don Quixote LIGHTING DESIGN: MICHAEL MAZZOLA WORLD PREMIERE: December 26, 1869; Imperial Russian Ballet;

Bolshoi Theatre; Moscow, Russia

OBT SCHOOL PREMIERE: April 12, 2018; Newmark Theatre; Portland, Oregon Don Quixote excerpts by Ludwig Mikus, performed by the Sofia National Opera Orchestra, Nayden Todorov, Conductor, Courtesy of Naxos of America

SYNOPSIS: Since Marius Petipa’s first choreographic interpretation of Cervantes’ Don Quixote in 1869, the work has been reshaped by choreographers ranging from Nureyev to Balanchine. It has offered a wealth of engaging and challenging performance opportunities for generations of classical dancers. In the Dream Sequence, the idealistic Don Quixote — who has set off on a quest to seek adventure and live by the code of chivalry — falls asleep and dreams of fantastical creatures, followed by beautiful maidens, including his ideal woman Dulcina, who is represented by Kitri, the local innkeeper’s daughter.

Venetian Carnival: Pas de Deux from Satanella CHOREOGRAPHY: LISA SUNDSTROM after MARIUS PETIPA MUSIC: CESARE PUGNI, after a theme by NICCOLÒ PAGANINI LIGHTING DESIGN: MICHAEL MAZZOLA WORLD PREMIERE: February 12, 1859; Imperial Russian Ballet;

Mariinsky Theatre; St. Petersburg, Russia

OBT SCHOOL PREMIERE: April 21, 2018; Newmark Theatre; Portland, Oregon

SYNOPSIS: Satanella tells the story of a young count who summons the devil to be his companion. The devil takes on many guises, before appearing as the enchanting beauty Satanella, whom the count falls in love with. Then, on the eve of their wedding, Satanella takes off her mask and reveals her true face. Originally choreographed for the benefit performance of Amelia Ferraris, Marius Petipa incorporated this pas de deux into Satanella’s third act when he revived the ballet for Alexandra Vergina in 1868. The pas de deux has since become a staple of classical ballet.

OREGON BALLET THEATRE • ANNUAL SCHOOL PERFORMANCE

SYNOPSIS: “Accidental Signals is primarily a dance inspired by both the lush and playful qualities of Britten’s Simple Symphony. However, during the creation process, there seemed to be developing, among the dancers and myself, a real sense of wanting to communicate with each other through the gestural quality of the movement. These ‘signals’ seemed to occur almost ‘accidentally.’ Accidental Signals is dedicated to the memory of Elizabeth Sawyer for her guidance and support and for the mutual love of Britten’s music.” —Nicolo Fonte

State Theater; New York City, New York

OBT PREMIERE: 11 April 2008; Newmark Theatre; Portland, Oregon The performance of Valse Fantaisie, a Balanchine® Ballet, is presented by arrangement with The George Balanchine Trust and has been produced in accordance with the Balanchine Style® and Balanchine Technique® Service standards established and provided by the Trust.

SYNOPSIS: Attended by the male dancer, the ballerinas move together in a whirl of perpetual motion. The 1967 rendering of ValseFantaisie was originally presented as the second section of Glinkiana, which was choreographed to four different compositions by Glinka. The music, roughly contemporaneous with the waltzes of Frédéric Chopin, is fast and light, although it was popularly called “the Melancholy Waltz.” Mikhail Glinka (1804-1857), Russia’s first national composer, has been called the Mozart of his country. He is best known for his operas A Life for the Tsar and Ruslan and Ludmila. As a student at the Mariinsky Theatre, Balanchine danced in the latter; in 1969 he directed and choreographed the opera for the State Opera of Hamburg.

A Grand Étude CHOREOGRAPHY: NATASHA BAR, PETER FRANC, ELISE LEGERE, ALISON ROPER, KEMBE STALEY, LISA SUNDSTROM MUSIC: PYOTR ILYICH TCHAIKOVSKY, Suite No. 3 in G major, Op. 55: IV. Theme and Variations LIGHTING DESIGN: MICHAEL MAZZOLA WORLD PREMIERE: April 21, 2018; Oregon Ballet Theatre School;

Suite No. 3 in G major, Op. 55: IV. Theme and Variations by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, performed by the National Symphony Orchestra of Ireland, Stefan Sanderling, Conductor, Courtesy of Naxos of America.

SYNOPSIS: This colorful pageant brings together levels one through six of the School of Oregon Ballet Theatre, plus members of OBT2. Each level presents a piece of choreography created especially for this afternoon’s performance by one of the school’s faculty members. The Étude presents a dancer’s development and progression level-by-level as they move through the school. The finale brings the entire school together onstage for a grand défilé and a stirring close to today’s performance.

ARTISTIC STAFF

KEVIN IRVING

ARTISTIC DIRECTOR

Kevin Irving began dancing with jazz classes in his hometown dance school (Long Island, New York), and later joined the school and training ensemble of Alvin Ailey. From 1982 to 1985, he danced with The Elisa Monte Dance Company of New York, but, at 24, he took a sharp turn toward classical dance and joined Les Grands Ballets Canadiens, in Montréal. Promoted first to soloist and then to principal dancer, Irving became a well-known figure wherever LGBC performed. In 1993, Irving joined Twyla Tharp Dance for a project that included performances at L’Opera de Paris and the PBS television film of In the Upper Room. From 1994 to 2002, Irving was ballet master and associate director with Nacho Duato’s Compañía Nacional de Danza in Madrid, Spain. From 2002 to 2007, he was artistic director of The Göteborg Ballet in Sweden. The company, under Irving’s tenure as director, was named the most important dance company in Sweden in Ballet International’s critics’ poll. From 2007 to 2013, he was a frequent guest ballet master with The Royal Danish Ballet and has been a guest teacher with numerous other companies and schools. He has staged ballets by Nacho Duato and Nicolo Fonte on companies such as The Royal Ballet Covent Garden, Nederlands Dans Theater, Hubbard Street Dance Chicago, and The Australian Ballet, among many others. Irving was also associate director at dance company Morphoses (2011–2012), coordinating special initiatives aimed at defining the company’s unique brand and profile in the dance world. In 2010, Irving founded I-DANCE (Inspiring Dance: American Nation Choreographic Exchange), a non-profit organization that has sent teachers and choreographers to dance communities in Central and South America. He was named artistic director of Oregon Ballet Theatre in July 2013. Photo by Michael Slobodian

ANTHONY JONES

FORMER SCHOOL DIRECTOR, VALSE FANTAISIE STAGER

A native of Minneapolis, Jones began his early ballet studies at the Minnesota Dance Theatre, followed by professional training at the National Ballet School in Toronto, and ultimately The School of American Ballet in New York, where he studied under Stanley Williams, Andrei Kramarevsky, and Richard Rapp. He joined

6

Seattle’s Pacific Northwest Ballet in 1990 and was promoted to soloist in 1993. At PNB he performed a broad repertory that included the works of Marius Petipa, George Balanchine, Sir Antony Tudor, August Bournonville, Glen Tetley, and Kent Stowell, among others. After his performing career, he graduated from New York University and eventually became director of The Huntington Ballet Theatre in Long Island, New York, and worked as an acquisitions associate at the Frick Collection in New York City. In 2010, he joined the faculty of the Palucca Hochschule für Tanz Dresden (The Palucca School and University of Dance) in Dresden, Germany, as a teacher for classical ballet. In August 2013, he was appointed school director of the Oregon Ballet Theatre School. In 2018, he was appointed school director of The School of Ballet Arizona.

NICOLO FONTE

RESIDENT CHOREOGRAPHER

Nicolo Fonte was appointed Oregon Ballet Theatre’s resident choreographer in the spring of 2016 marking the culmination of a nearly 10-year relationship during which he created five world premieres for the company beginning with the opening of Bolero in 2008. Fonte’s work has been noted by critics for a unique movement language as well as a highly developed fusion of ideas, dance, and design. Born in Brooklyn, New York, Fonte started dancing at the age of 14. He studied at the Joffrey Ballet School in New York as well as at the San Francisco Ballet and New York City Ballet Schools while completing a Bachelor of Fine Arts at SUNY Purchase. Upon graduation he danced with Peridance in NYC and later joined Les Grands Ballets Canadiens in Montréal, dancing in the works of Balanchine, Tudor, Kudelka, and Spaniard Nacho Duato. Fonte subsequently joined Duato’s Compañia Nacional de Danza in Madrid and forged a strong identity in the Spanish company for seven years—for both his dancing and his choreography. En los Segundos Ocultos, (In Hidden Seconds), one of three ballets Fonte made for the Spanish company, was hailed as a breakthrough work of great impact with the poetic vision of a mature artist and indeed this ballet established his presence on the European dance scene. In 2000, Fonte retired from performing to devote himself full-time to his choreographic career. Since that time, he has created or staged his ballets for companies large and small all over the world, such as The Dutch National Ballet, Houston Ballet, Royal Danish Ballet, Pacific Northwest Ballet, Ballet West, and Royal Ballet of Flanders, among many others.

OREGON BALLET THEATRE • ANNUAL SCHOOL PERFORMANCE

Fonte received a Choo San Goh award for his 2002 collaboration with Pacific Northwest Ballet, Almost Tango, of which R.M. Campbell of the Seattle Post-Intelligencer wrote, “Fonte is a thinker, an architect who creates the new rather than reinvent the old. He is a master of manipulating space and creating relationships.” Almost Tango was also voted as one of Dance Europe’s “Best Premieres” when it was re-staged for The Australian Ballet in 2004. From 2002 to 2006, Nicolo enjoyed an ongoing creative partnership with The Göteborg Ballet in Sweden, creating and staging numerous works that helped establish the company’s distinct profile. Fonte has also played an important role in the ongoing development of Aspen Santa Fe Ballet as one of that company’s most popular guest choreographers. In addition to Oregon Ballet Theatre, Nicolo Fonte is currently the resident choreographer for Ballet West in Salt Lake City, which began with the 2012/13 season. Photo by Jana Cruder
