WELCOME TO OREGON CHILDREN’S THEATRE! On January 19, OCT joined 500 theaters nationally and many theaters locally for The Ghostlight Project to affirm our commitment to stand for and protect the values of inclusion, participation, and compassion for everyone regardless of race, class, religion, country of origin, immigration status, (dis)ability, age, gender identity, or sexual orientation. We were honored to have OCT staff, board, friends, teachers, students, Young Professionals, cast members, and the brothers
and sisters of IATSE stagehands union gather with us at OCT Headquarters (1939 NE Sandy Boulevard). What struck me most about the gathering was that it was about empathy, love, and affirmation of our values. These values are expressed and represented in Flora & Ulysses and Tomás & the Library Lady. Flora’s world is filled with oddities and outsiders. It is a world that we could easily dismiss, but embracing it is so joyous and fun, that to dismiss it would be our loss. Tomás’ world is full of hardship and barriers, yet he and his family remain kind and loving and they inspire us to grow and achieve. We embrace the values of The Ghostlight Project because it is who we are as an organization. As human beings, we are all different, but when we gather together as a community to tell and listen to stories, we illuminate our similarities. At OCT, we believe in and nurture the human potential of the youth we serve.

Have you ever wished you had a superpower? What would your superpower be?
2
Could this superpower help you be a hero? How would you use this superpower for good? What positive things could you do in the world if you had this superpower? Who would you save?
3
Is there a time when you were heroic? OR a time when someone was heroic for you?
4
Have you ever experienced a big change—something that changed what your daily life looked like, such as moving, getting a new baby sister or brother, starting a new school?
5
What was hard about that change? What didn’t you like about it, or what was difficult to get used to? • What was good about that change? • How did that make you feel? • What new strengths did you get from that change?

Our support of their production, Tomás & the Library Lady, which celebrates cultural differences and the power of reading, is a terrific message for all children. Breaking geographic barriers, the production tour will reach rural and underserved communities through their Ticket to Read initiative, providing free copies of the book for children to share with their families. We believe there’s a direct correlation between children’s education and the long-term economic health of a community. We find great value in a partner that helps put books in the hands of kids and offers experience with live theater. Enjoy the show! TOMÁS & THE LIBRARY LADY IN REAL LIFE Tomás Rivera was born in Texas to migrant farm workers in 1935. In 1944, he moved with his family to Iowa to work in the fields. While he was there he met a kind librarian, Bertha Gaukle, who helped instill his love for reading. Rivera grew up to be a high school teacher, then a professor, and ultimately the chancellor at University of California, Riverside, where the campus library is also named after him. The library houses an archive of his work, including 85,000 pieces donated by his wife after his death in 1984. Throughout his life, Rivera was a strong advocate of the power of education for Mexican-Americans. He was given an award from the Chicano News Media Association for outstanding achievements and contributions to the Chicano community, and also received an award from the Riverside Chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People for his leadership as Chancellor at the Riverside Campus. Discussion Questions! 1. Tomás learns English as his second
language. Does your family speak a language other than English at home? Have you ever been in a situation where you didn’t understand the language someone was speaking? How did it make you feel?
2. Tomás develops a special relationship with the librarian. Is there an adult who has influenced your life or shared something special with you?
3. When Tomás reads, his
imagination takes him right into the story. If you could become a part of one of your favorite books, which book and what part of the story would it be?
4. When did you first learn to read? What was the first book you read by yourself?
5. Tomás tells the library lady he would like to read about tigers and dinosaurs. What do you want to learn about? Could you learn about any of those things in a book? Questions from www.desmoinesperformingarts.org/documents/resources/67.pdf

PORTLAND’5 CENTERS FOR THE ARTS Founded in 1988, Oregon Children’s Theatre (OCT) is Oregon’s largest nonprofit professional children’s theater company. OCT’s mission is to create exceptional theater experiences that transform lives. OCT annually reaches 120,000 children, parents, and educators from more than 18 Oregon and four Washington counties. OCT offers a year-round Acting Academy for students ages 3–18 and the unique Young Professionals mentoring program. The company also offers a range of services to schools and the community, including teacher professional development, resource guides and suggested lesson plans, Loud & Clear (a public speaking workshop), an extensive outreach program, and student internship and apprenticeship opportunities. Under the shared vision of healthier kids and communities, Kaiser Permanente Northwest and OCT are delivering free Educational Theatre Programs to schools and community organizations in Oregon and SW Washington. This innovative collaboration helps catalyze healthy life choices. Through free touring productions, residencies, workshops and after-school programs, the Educational Theatre Program has served over 300,000 students since its inception in 2006. Oregon Children’s Theatre is a resident company of Portland’5 Centers for the Arts and a member of Theatre Communications Group, Travel Portland, and ASSITEJ, the international children’s theater association.
