Director’s notes

In 1938, Thomas (Fats) Waller recorded more than 100 songs. 100. Songs. Which makes me wonder how many more songs he actually heard that weren’t recorded. He was possessed by a musical demon that held him tightly in its grip and refused to let go. Waller was born to a preacher in 1904, in a Harlem that was just beginning to find its identity. Though African Americans had long lived in this upper part of Manhattan, it was actually in the year of Waller’s birth that a huge migration began, catalyzed by a real estate crash that drove families out of other parts of the city. The Harlem that Waller grew up in saw the largest gathering of free African Americans the United States had yet seen. And this gathering created enormous energy, tension and possibility. There were voices crying for a return to Africa, sensing that America would never make a real place in her economic and political heart for the black community. Other voices demanded a fight for their rightful place in her future. Some taught decorum and respectability, urging the community to prove they were just as good as whites. Others sensed that the unique journey of their ancestors had created the possibility of a rhythm, a soul, a music and a literature that no white man could replicate. Waller began playing the piano (and the organ) as a young boy, and quickly exhibited a preternatural gift with his fingers. By 15, he was rocking the house on the organ at the local movie theater to the intense dismay of his father, who seriously believed that the new sounds Fats loved to make were inspired by the devil. What else could explain the sensuality of the dance moves that seemed to inevitably follow? The fights between father and son were violent and unending. But Fats was a man possessed: call it the devil, call it his muse, or call it his destiny — the music was not to be denied. His family life was always messy. There were too many gigs to play, too many women to seduce, too many bourbons to down, too many jokes to tell. He loved nothing more than to play a gig, lead the party over to a friend’s apartment and battle it out on the keys with the most thrilling pianists in the neighborhood — everyone dancing, eating, drinking and laughing until the wee hours of the morning. Fats traveled in all worlds, playing the best hotels and nightclubs, and the most elegant mansions (often having to enter through the kitchen). He acutely felt the blunt prejudice and overt oppression of his race in that moment and time. He ended up behind bars on more than one occasion for “forgetting” to pay child support from his first marriage. He had recordings funded by some of the most notorious gangsters of his day. He lived large, fast and relentlessly. I saw Richard Maltby, Jr.’s production of Ain’t Misbehavin’ as a 17-year-old senior in high school. It was my first Broadway show. With his permission, we’ve expanded the size of the ensemble for this production, in hopes of bringing the many facets of Fats Waller’s world to physical life through each song included in the evening. The Joint was Jumpin’: An Introduction to the

Harlem Renaissance The term Harlem Renaissance refers to the phenomenal swell of creative output generated by African American writers, scholars, artists and musicians during the brief period between, approximately, the end of the First World War and the start of the Great Depression. Shortly after the turn of the twentieth century, millions of African Americans relocated from the Southern United States to cities like Chicago, Detroit and New York. This process of urbanization, known as the first Great Migration, was precipitated by the need to escape the racial segregation rendered by Jim Crow laws, 伀挀琀漀戀攀爀 ㈀㐀 ⴀ 一漀瘀攀洀戀攀爀 ㈀㤀Ⰰ ㈀ ㄀㔀 which not only restricted their civil liberties, but also subjected them to the violence and hatred born of codified racism. As a result of this diaspora, the Manhattan neighborhood of Harlem became a hub for many African Americans seeking a more progressive place to call home. The swift growth of the community soon gave way to a revolutionary cultural movement. One of its prime concerns became the investigation of the politics of blackness and a new envisioning of African American identity. The Harlem community — populated by prominent individuals including W. E. B. Du Bois, Langston Hughes, Zora Neale Hurston, Marcus Garvey, Paul Robeson, Ethel Waters and Alain Locke — wrestled with these questions through a 䐀攀挀攀洀戀攀爀 ㈀ ⴀ ㈀㜀Ⰰ ㈀ ㄀㔀 vibrant surge of arts and letters, many of which were published in Du Bois’ magazine The Crisis, the official publication of the recently-founded N.A.A.C.P. This flourish of intellectual and creative activity found its underscore — its sonic fuel and propulsive rhythm — in the music of the movement: jazz. The word “jazz” encapsulates a multifarious genre descended of the blues, ragtime, and other styles pioneered by African American musicians toward the end of the nineteenth century. The expressive freedom and mischievous spirit of Fats Waller’s music came to be called the Harlem Stride. Waller’s style radiates a boldness of spirit that, much like the Harlem Renaissance, disrupted the status quo and left indelible marks on the cultural consciousness. As J.A. Rogers, a leading historian of the movement, wrote in his 1925 essay Jazz At Home: “The true spirit of jazz is a joyous revolt from convention, custom, authority, boredom, even sorrow — from everything 䐀攀挀攀洀戀攀爀 㤀 ⴀ ㌀㄀Ⰰ ㈀ ㄀㔀 that would confine the soul of man and hinder its riding free on the air.” —Benjamin Fainstein, PCS Literary Manager

Since his last PCS production, he has toured the United States and Britain with a countryrock band, played in eight different bands in the Portland area, continued to teach upright and electric bass and cello, and (best of all) got married. Will and his wife Nicole welcomed their son Greyson in April, and spend most of their time trying to make him laugh. Mieke Bruggeman-Smith Reeds

Mieke Bruggeman-Smith is a performer, educator, composer/arranger and development director for the Portland Jazz Composers’ Ensemble (PJCE). She performs in a wide variety of groups, including the all-female sax quartet, Quadraphonnes; the Afro-Cuban band, Melao de Cuba; and the 12-piece jazz chamber orchestra, PJCE; as well as playing classical alto when she can, and performing musicals. Recent PCS productions include: Dreamgirls, Fiddler on the Roof and Somewhere in Time. Mieke also enjoys teaching private lessons at her home studio and co-teaching at Roosevelt High School, Beaumont Middle School and the Portland Youth Jazz Orchestra. She is heavily involved in promoting music education and loves collaborating with her music community. Music is the one outlet that (as author Tom Robbins might say) keeps the oxygen from leaking out of her life. Levis Dragulin Trumpet

Levis began performing on trumpet when he was 11 years old. In 2006, he was awarded a Bachelor of Science in Music from Portland State University. After that, he decided to work on Royal Caribbean cruise lines as a theater band musician, performing lead trumpet. He traveled the world for four years to places such as Australia, New Zealand, Alaska, Mexico, the Caribbean and the Mediterranean. In the last six years, Levis has been involved in around 30 musical performances, including Little Shop of Horrors, Hairspray, Annie Get Your Gun, Bye Bye Birdie, South Pacific, La Cage aux Folles, Cats, My Fair Lady, Beauty and the Beast, Show Boat, The Music Man, Dreamgirls, Thoroughly Modern Millie, Oklahoma! and Anything Goes.


ain’t Misbehavin’ | Band & creative team Sam Foulger Drums

Sam is a versatile musician and teacher, performing with theater companies such as Portland Center Stage (Dreamgirls) and Oregon Children’s Theatre (Schoolhouse Rock, The Magic Treehouse); stage shows like The Mont Chris Hubbard Bonus Show and The Warren Black Show; and with jazz groups including the Blake Lyman Quintet, Art Resnick Trio and Jim Beatty Jazz Band. Since 2008, he’s played drums for regional man of mystery, Tony Starlight. Originally from Poughkeepsie, New York, Sam studied music education and symphonic percussion at Penn State, and now lives with his wife, dogs and rollerblades, here in Portland, OR. Thomas “Fats” Waller

Fats Waller (May 21, 1904–December 15, 1943) was an African-American jazz pianist, organist, composer and comedic entertainer. His nickname came about because he weighed nearly 300 pounds. He was born Thomas Wright Waller in New York City. Waller studied classical piano and organ before apprenticing himself to legendary Harlem stride pianist James P. Johnson. Johnson introduced Waller to the world of rent parties (a party with a piano player, designed to help pay the rent by charging the guests), and soon he developed a performing career. He was an excellent pianist — now considered one of the very best who ever played in the stride style — but his songwriting, and his lovable, roguish stage personality, overshadowed his playing. Before his solo career, he played with many performers, from Erskine Tate to Bessie Smith, but his greatest success came with his own five- or six-piece combo, Fats Waller and his Rhythm. Among his songs are, “Squeeze Me” (1919); “Ain’t Misbehavin’” (1929); “Blue Turning Grey Over You” (1929); “Honeysuckle Rose” (1929); “I’ve Got a Feeling I’m Falling” (1929); and “Jitterbug Waltz” (1942). He collaborated with the Tin Pan Alley lyricist, Andy Razaf, and had a commercially successful career. Waller made a successful tour of the British Isles in the late 1930s, and appeared in one of the earliest BBC television broadcasts. He also appeared in several feature films and short subject films, most notably Stormy Weather (1943). With Razaf, he wrote, “What Did I Do (To Be So Black and Blue)?” (1929),

which became a hit for Louis Armstrong. This song, a searing treatment of racism, black and white, calls into question the accusations of “shallow entertainment” leveled at both Armstrong and Waller. On December 15, 1943, at age 39, Waller died aboard an eastbound train in the vicinity of Kansas City, Missouri, following a West Coast engagement. Murray Horwitz is an American playwright, lyricist, NPR broadcaster and arts administrator. Horwitz graduated from Kenyon College with a Bachelor of Arts in English and Drama. He began his career working as a clown with Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey Circus. In 1973, after moving to New York City, Horwitz appeared in the one-man show, An Evening Of Sholom Aleichem, which was directed by Richard Maltby, Jr. (in which he continues to perform at The Kennedy Center, The Manhattan Theatre Club and The New York Shakespeare Festival/Public Theater). In 1978, Horwitz and Maltby created Ain’t Misbehavin’ and won Tony, Obie, Emmy, Grammy and New York Drama Critics’ Circle awards for the show. He subsequently became the assistant director of Opera/Musical Theater at

the National Endowment for the Arts. In 1992, he received an honorary doctorate of fine arts from Kenyon College. Chris Coleman Director

Chris joined Portland Center Stage as artistic director in May, 2000. Most recently, he directed the Off-Broadway debut of Threesome at 59E59 Theaters (a production that had its world premiere at PCS and was also presented at ACTSeattle). Before coming to Portland, Chris was artistic director at Actor’s Express in Atlanta, a company he co-founded in the basement of an old church in 1988. Chris recently returned to Atlanta to direct the world premiere of Edward Foote at Alliance Theatre. He also directed Phylicia Rashad and Kenny Leon in Same Time Next Year at True Colors Theatre Company in Atlanta, in 2014. Don is excited to re-create his design for The Santaland Diaries. Don has served as a lighting designer for JAW: A Playwrights Festival, and was PCS’s master electrician from 1996–2007. Previous PCS lighting designs include: The Santaland Diaries (2009–2014), The People’s Republic of Portland (2013 and 2015), The Receptionist, Act a Lady, The Thugs, Fully Committed, Another Fine Mess, Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf ? and The Santaland Diaries with A Christmas Memory (2002–2004) that earned Don one of his seven Drammy Awards for Lighting Design. Roughly the number of hand-painted bricks featured in the set. The local scenic artists that created the set used eco-friendly sheets of molded Pulp Art to achieve the realistic appearance of a brick wall. The year The Second City first opened its doors in Chicago. This improv giant created Twist Your Dickens, and also trained comedic greats such as Dan Aykroyd, Gilda Radner, Stephen Colbert and Tina Fey.

Bobby Mort wrote for The Colbert Report during the 2012-2013 Season (one Emmy Award) and currently resides in Los Angeles. He grew up in South Carolina, before moving to Chicago where he trained at iO Chicago and performed for a number of years with the improv group, People of Earth, and sketch comedy trio, Maximum Party Zone. Bobby is extremely excited to be working with Peter Gwinn, the fine folks of The Second City, and Portland Center Stage on Twist Your Dickens. Ron West Director

This production marks Ron West’s debut as a member of SSDC, The Society of Stage Directors and Choreographers. That his name would be ever be uttered in the same sentence with “choreographer” is nothing short of miraculous. In the P 16 | Portland Center Stage twist your dickens

past year, he directed The 39 Steps at the Malibu Playhouse and Quick and Dirty (which he also wrote) at The Second City Hollywood. Also, he and the renowned playwright Catherine Butterfield completed their work on a stage adaptation of Anthony Trollope’s The Way We Live Now. Ron has directed more shows than he can count for The Second City, including the awardwinning Curious George Goes to War and the international tour of Sex & The Second City. He and Phil Swann wrote the Shakespeare-based musicals, The People vs. Friar Laurence and deLEARious. They also collaborated on Neil Simon’s Musical Fools, based on the play by Neil Simon. Yes, that Neil Simon. On TV, Ron most recently appeared on The Soul Man and Blunt Talk, though he can’t figure out what channel they’re on. He is happy to report that the power of Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol withstands, and even supports, the irreverent treatment you are about to witness. Jeff Cone is the costume shop manager at the Alliance Theatre in Atlanta, Georgia. Before moving to Atlanta, Jeff spent 16 seasons as PCS’s resident costume designer and costume shop manager. In that time he designed costumes for over 75 productions. Of those shows, over 50 were in PCS’s first eight seasons at the Armory. Favorite PCS productions include West Side Story, Cabaret, The 39 Steps, One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, Sometimes a Great Notion, Snow Falling on Cedars, The Imaginary Invalid, Black Pearl Sings!, Venus in Fur and Clybourne Park.
