Over the years, Portland’5 Centers for the Arts has continued to evolve and change in order to maintain its standing as one of the top performing arts centers in North America. Three years ago we went through a rigorous rebranding process that resulted in a name change and a fabulous new website.

Our new name was designed to reflect our desire to be “Portland’s” performing arts centers and to better capture the five different performance spaces we operate on behalf of the citizens of Portland under a single umbrella name.

But, we also wanted to make sure that we had shows on our stages that would provide something for everyone.

In 2015 we dipped our toes into the waters of being an arts presenter to ensure our theaters were full and busy, and that shows that were skipping Portland for lack of a presenting organization would now have a reason to stop in Portland.

Portland’5 brings over 1,000 music, theater, dance, and lecture performances to Portland each year because we know that art matters. ART BRINGS JOY, INSPIRES THE MIND, AND UNITES COMMUNITIES. ART CHANGES LIVES. As the 5th largest performing arts center in the U.S., we are national leaders in keeping art and culture thriving.

Portland’5 Centers for the Arts was conceived in order to create a vibrant heart for our community’s cultural life.

Today we embody our original vision through five venues which draw close to a million patrons to Portland’s cultural district and generate an average of $60 million in regional spending every year.

We are continuing to grow, and this season we’re proud to introduce Portland’5 Presents, an initiative that will allow Portland’5 to begin presenting our own shows in order to bring an even more diverse range of programming to Portland, as well as generate revenue that will help us continue to support our resident companies and other local non-profit performing arts groups.

THE CROSSROADS PROJECT: RISING TIDE with the Fry Street Quartet Thurs, October 15 • 7:30pm NEWMARK THEATRE Presented in partnership with Chamber Music Northwest

The Crossroads Project is an entirely unique experience partnering the two great endeavors of science and art.

It’s a partnership with a purpose— bringing to bear the power of performance art to one of the great conversations of our time—human civilization’s growing unsustainability and the quest for truly meaningful response. Crossroads combines compelling music, spoken word by renowned physicist and educator Dr. Robert Davies, and evocative imagery in an effort to inspire deep and personal contemplation of this theme.

Kaminsky’s new work, Rising Tide, is the centerpiece of the performance, offering more direct responses to each component. “Rising Tide, my sixth string quartet, was commissioned by the Fry Street Quartet for The Crossroads Project”, says Kaminsky. “The work is in four movements—H2O, Bios, Forage, and Societas. I was motivated to bring together artists and scientists to create a compelling work of art incorporating scientific research that would inspire deep reflection, and, ultimately, action, among those who experience this performance. The final movement, from Janácek’s first quartet, closes the program with its extraordinary emotional soundscape that searches, haunts, and, ultimately questions. $26–$36

The music of Crossroads is the core of the performance, anchored by a new work by composer Laura Kaminsky, and works by Haydn and Janácek.

The first movement of Haydn’s “Sunrise” Quartet opens the performance—chosen not only because of the piece’s nickname but of Haydn’s place as the quintessential composer of the Enlightenment, which ties to the Prelude’s consideration of the enterprise of Science.

Thanks to a partnership with Energy Trust of Oregon, Portland’5 Centers for the Arts is moving towards a more sustainable future—one light bulb at a time. Last year, 7,642 light bulbs were changed at different areas outside Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall, the Newmark, Brunish and Winningstad Theatres, including the marquees over both entrances of the Schnitzer Concert Hall and along both sides of the iconic Portland Sign. Familiar but energy-draining 11-watt bulbs were finally replaced by longer-lasting and energy efficient two-watt LED bulbs.

Physically replacing the bulbs was a complex effort—a specialty lift had to be recruited in order to replace the bulbs on the Portland Sign, and one lane of traffic was even blocked to ensure public safety throughout the week-long period. But it was worth the hassle. The new light bulbs are expected to save 186,000 kilowatt hours—enough to power 16 homes, and will not only help Portland’5 save energy and support sustainability goals, but also save staff time and dollars.

Chamber Music Northwest and Portland favorite Chris Thile, of Punch Brothers and Nickel Creek fame, is a mandolin virtuoso, composer and vocalist. With his broad outlook that encompasses progressive bluegrass, classical, rock and jazz, Thile transcends the borders of conventionally circumscribed genres, creating a distinctly American canon and a new musical aesthetic for performers and audiences alike. On this new program, he draws from his highly acclaimed 2013 recording of Bach Sonatas and Partitas, while also exploring his own compositions and contemporary music.“This record to me is not about this iconic violin music played on the mandolin like, ‘Oh boy, what fun, he’s playing a weird instrument!’,” says Thile. “It’s about Bach being one of the greatest musicians of all time, the solo violin music being some of his best work, and the mandolin having the potential to cast it in a new and hopefully interesting light.”

Recently awarded a MacArthur Fellowship (aka “Genius Grant”), in February 2013 Thile also won a Grammy for his work on The Goat Rodeo Sessions, collaborating with Yo-Yo Ma, Edgar Meyer and Stuart Duncan.

Hailed by The Times of London as “brilliant, audacious, original and, above all, entertaining,” the Punch Brothers recently released their latest album The Phosphorescent Blues in January 2015, and Thile and renowned bassist Edgar Meyer released their latest album collaboration Bass & Mandolin in September 2014. $29.50–$39.50 PORTLAND5.COM

Spanish Brass returns to Portland to tour their Christmas album, Sublime Christmas. While the selections include the Baroque composer Arcangelo Corelli’s “Christmas Concerto” and the authentic Catlan villancico “Fum, Fum, Fum” the focus is on songs from the Anglo-Saxon countries, where Christmas music perhaps has even deeper social roots than in the Mediterranean lands. Of special note are two modern American classics, “Christmas Time is Here” and “Linus and Lucy,” by jazz pianist/composer Vince Guaraldi, both highpoints of his album “A Charlie Brown Christmas.” $35

Hailed as “the future of chamber music” (Strings), Brooklyn Rider performs eclectic repertoire in arresting performances that have attracted legions of fans and rave reviews from classical, world, and rock critics alike. The brilliant young singer-songwriter and composer Gabriel Kahane (who performed at Chamber Music Northwest’s Summer Festival in 2013), who has written commissioned works for the Kronos Quartet and the Los Angeles Philharmonic, meets the dynamic string quartet Brooklyn Rider for a night of deeply absorbing music.

The quartet, whom The New York Times praised for “its consistent refinement, globe-spanning stylistic range, and do-it-yourself gumption,” will perform selections from Kahane’s “Come On All You Ghosts” for string quartet and voice, and Bradbury Studies, his recent essay for string quartet based on the song “Bradbury (304 Broadway)”, as well as selections from his much-lauded 2014 Sony release, “The Ambassador.” Also included are selections from the Brooklyn Rider Almanac, a groundbreaking multi-disciplinary project centered around an album of the same name, and Schubert’s great “Rosamunde” Quartet. $25.50–$45.50

Since its inception in 1985, Turtle Island Quartet has been a singular force in the creation of bold, new trends in chamber music for strings. Winner of the 2006 and 2008 Grammy Awards for Best Classical Crossover Album, Turtle Island fuses the classical quartet esthetic with contemporary American musical styles, and by devising a performance practice that honors both, the state of the art has inevitably been redefined. Cellist Yo-Yo Ma has proclaimed TIQ to be “a unified voice that truly breaks new ground—authentic and passionate—a reflection of some of the most creative music-making today.”

In their new Birth of the Cool program, Turtle Island Quartet employs their signature groove-based rhythmic techniques to create brand-new arrangements of cool jazz standards that prove that the line between classical music and jazz is much thinner than one might think. In addition to classics by Miles Davis, Dave Brubeck, John Carisi and others, the quartet will premiere a brand-new work by co-founder and violinist David Balakrishnan. Rounding out the program are selections from the Turtle Island Quartet’s latest album, “Confetti Man” for an evening that is typically Turtle Island Quartet’s style—virtuosic, innovative, and utterly surprising and unexpected. $34.50 PORTLAND5.COM

Banjoists Béla Fleck and Abigail Washburn have mastered the deceptively intricate art of the duet. Their performances embrace a diversity almost unthinkable—coming from just two banjos and one voice.

Washburn’s beguiling composing, playing and singing blend with Fleck’s riveting and virtuosic musicianship to create music both unique yet familiar in texture. Fleck, a 15-time Grammy winner, has collaborated with Chick Corea, Oumou Sangare, Zakir Hussain, Edgar Meyer, Dave Mathews, Earl Scruggs, and the entire Cleveland Orchestra for his Banjo Concert ‘The Impostor’. Washburn’s banjo has taken her far beyond the usual old-timey comfort zone, musically and geographically.

An alumnus of Uncle Earl, the powerhouse all-female stringband, Abby’s adopted second homeland is China, and her music resounds with echoes of Appalachia and the tidal wave of emerging Chinese cultural influence.

Together, Fleck and Washburn employ the relatively rare 3-finger and clawhammer banjo duet to create an explosion of musical white heat. $25–$45

Black Violin is the blend of classical, hip-hop, rock, R&B, and bluegrass music.

Live, they are accompanied by their incredible band, featuring ace turntable whiz DJ SPS and drummer Nathaniel Stokes. Named one of the hottest bands at South by Southwest in 2013, Black Violin was invited to perform at Bonnaroo and returned to SXSW this year to standing room only crowds.

Since starting Black Violin a decade ago Wil Baptiste and Kevin “Kev Marcus” Sylvester have performed an average of 200 shows a year in 49 states and 36 countries while appearing at official NFL celebrations for three Super Bowls and last year’s U.S. Open in Forest Hills with Jordin Sparks. Individually and together, Black Violin has collaborated with the likes of P. Diddy, Kanye West, 50 Cent, Tom Petty, Aerosmith, Aretha Franklin and The Eagles.

A childhood in East Africa gave Emmy Awardwinning cinematographer Bob Poole a fierce curiosity about the natural world as well as an adventurous spirit. Now, for a new, 6-part PBS/ Nat Geo International series, Bob is drawing on that experience to document the rebirth of a lost Eden: Mozambique’s Gorongosa National Park, a jewel of Africa’s parks system until civil war almost destroyed it. There, he joined forces with rangers and scientists (including his sister, renowned elephant researcher Joyce Poole), on perhaps the biggest conservation project on the planet—and learned that the wild places we’ve broken can be put back together.

Voyage across the oceans with one of National Geographic’s most seasoned photographers and discover a vast, hidden world beneath the waves. Using his camera to communicate, Brian Skerry has spent more than 10,000 hours underwater telling the oceans’ stories. His images celebrate the mystery of the depths and offer portraits of creatures so intimate they sometimes appear to have been shot in a studio. Skerry dives eight months of the year, often in extreme conditions beneath Arctic ice or in predator-infested waters, and has even lived at the bottom of the sea to get close to his subjects.

THE SEARCH FOR LIFE BEYOND EARTH Kevin Hand, Astrobiologist Tues, May 17 • 7:30pm NEWMARK THEATRE

Astrobiologist Kevin Hand is searching for life beyond Earth.

Working at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, he is designing instruments that will travel to Jupiter’s moon Europa to search for a possible subsurface ocean, which may support primitive forms of life. His work often takes him out of the lab to visit some of the world’s most forbidding environments—such as Antarctica and the deep sea to investigate how microbes eke out a living under extreme conditions. In support of our aim to involve underserved communities and celebrate diversity, our new education program is designed to provide elementary school children a free opportunity to hear nationally celebrated musical artists, learn about music, and experience our venues. Each event will offer a diverse range of ethnic and cultural perspectives, and celebrate the rich heritage of music in all its forms and cultures while teaching children about music, musicians, and instruments.

The inaugural year features special performances given by visiting artists including Turtle Island String Quartet, Black Violin, and Mariachi Sol De Mexico® de Jose Hernandez.

NOONTIME SHOWCASE Mondays • October–June Wednesdays • July–August 12:00pm–1:00pm Bring your lunch, pull up a chair, and let us entertain you year round! Starting on Mondays in October, join us in the Antoinette Hatfield Hall rotunda for free noontime performances every month featuring a wide variety of artists and styles. In the summer, we’ll move outside to enjoy the beautiful weather with noontime performances on Main Street every Wednesday July–August.

The whole family will love Summer Arts on Main Street! Enjoy spectacular free music and entertainment at the Noontime Showcase while taking advantage of free children’s arts and crafts activities. If you’re in the mood for shopping, peruse one of the many outdoor booths featuring local artisans selling handmade crafts, or swing through the Portland Farmers Market on the South Park Blocks.

John is the author of The Waste Land and Other Poems (Canarium, 2010), which received the Norma Farber First Book Award from the Poetry Society of America, and the chapbook Lucinda (Spork, 2013). The fulllength version of Lucinda will appear from Canarium in 2016. He is also the editor of Poems (19621997) by Robert Lax (Wave, 2013).

He lives in Portland and teaches at Portland State University.

MICHELE GLAZER

Michele’s most recent book of poems is On Tact, & the Made Up World (Iowa, 2010).

Her awards include fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts, Regional Arts & Culture Council, Oregon Arts Commission, and Literary Arts. Glazer teaches in and directs the MFA and BFA Creative Writing programs at Portland State University.

Samiya Bashir is the author of Gospel and Where the Apple Falls.

Recent issues of Poetry, Ecotone, World Literature Today, Poet Lore, Eleven Eleven, Cascadia Review, Hoax, The Normal School, and others house her newest poems. She holds a BA from the University of California, where she served as Poet Laureate, an MFA from the University of Michigan, where her poetry garnered two Hopwood Awards, and has won numerous fellowships, grants, and honors for her work. She teaches creative writing at Reed College.

KEVIN CRAFT

Seattle-based author and poet Kevin Craft is the current Editor of Poetry Northwest, the regions oldest literary magazine. His poems, reviews, and essays have appeared widely in such place as Poetry, The Kenyon Review, New England Review, Alaska Quarterly Review, and The Stranger. Kevin believes that poems, like good travelers, live in the go-between.

Karen Holmberg’s second book of poems, Axis Mundi, won the John Ciardi Prize and was published in 2013 by BkMk Press. Slate named it one of the ten best poetry books of 2013.

Recent poetry and nonfiction has appeared in such magazines as Southern Poetry Review, New England Review, West Branch, Black Warrior Review, Indiana Review, and Poetry East. She teaches poetry writing in the MFA program at Oregon State University.

JENNIFER RICHTER

Jennifer’s new collection, No Acute Distress, was named a Crab Orchard Series in Poetry Editor’s Selection; her first book, Threshold, was chosen by Natasha Trethewey for the Crab Orchard Series in Poetry and by Robert Pinsky as an Oregon Book Award Finalist. A former Wallace Stegner Fellow and Jones Lecturer at Stanford University, Richter currently teaches in Oregon State University’s MFA Program.

Poets on Broadway is presented by the Portland’5 Foundation and the Attic Institute. This series is made possible through an Opportunity Grant from the Regional Arts and Culture Council (RACC).

A collaborative cross-departmental group of Portland’5 employees dedicated to supporting Metro’s Sustainability Plan by adopting and implementing sustainability policies and practices at all Portland’5 facilities. Since its inception in 2013, the Green Team has increased signage and communication to help reduce waste, installed new recycling receptacles, and launched a campaign to promote energy conservation and efficiency with the help of Art, a light bulb mascot who reminds everyone to turn off the lights!

Founded in 1994, the Portland’5 Centers for the Arts Foundation is a non-profit organization dedicated to ensuring a strong cultural arts presence in the community by supporting Portland’5 Centers for the Arts through advocacy, fundraising, and regionwide community outreach. Their work helps us maintain high-quality venues that attract premiere performances, enriching our community and keeping our city vibrant.

Current Portland’5 Foundation projects include the Name a Seat Campaign, in which patrons and fans can make a tax-deductible donation to the foundation and have their name of choice engraved on a brass plaque attached to the armrest of a theater seat, and the Portland Walk of Stars, an event hosted by the foundation to honor key contributors of services, advocacy and/or financial resources to the arts and urban living in the greater Portland area. Honorees are recognized at this event with special performances and their own embedded granite star on Main Street.

WE ARE ETERNALLY GRATEFUL! Each season, new volunteers help fill out Portland’5’s volunteer corps that regularly hovers between 500 and 600 people. These volunteers undergo extensive training—customer service procedures, safety and evacuation drills, ticket reading, and more. Each job is crucial to the visitor experience at Portland’5 venues such as tour guides, office assistants, and gift shop sellers as well as ushers in the Winningstad, Newmark and Brunish Theatres.

The Portland’5 talented volunteer corps also produces the Noontime Showcase, a free monthly series of family-friendly performances that provide unique opportunities for nonprofit arts groups to increase their audience reach.
