DIRECTOR’S NOTE by Cristi Miles Why is it so important for us to experience Dickens’ A Christmas Carol year after year? As I try to answer this question I realize that I am living the answer. Because I forget. I forget its lesson. With the fast, exciting pace of my modern, busy life, I forget to simply breathe and be. I forget to slow down, I forget that I am not alone on this journey, and that there is more to living than achieving and accumulating. I forget that, as Fred says,

“there are many things from which I have derived good by which I have not profited.” Year after year, I crave to hear or read or see Dickens’ story because I need to remember. I need to remember that no matter how Scrooge-like I become, I can still change for the better. The holiday season, and this story, remind me that

“it is a good time; a kind, forgiving, charitable time: the only time I know of, in the long calendar of the year, when men and women seem by one consent to open their shut up hearts freely, and to think of all men equally, as if we all are merely fellow passengers to the grave.” And you, my fellow passenger, maybe you too are forgetful. May you consent to open your heart freely to this human tale of forgetting, learning and changing. May it remind you to cherish the people, the moments, and the beautiful life that surrounds us all, not just during this time of year, but every day. Happiest of Holidays!

WON’T YOU JOIN US FOR OUR NEXT PRODUCTION? YOU FOR ME FOR YOU

By Mia Chung Directed by Gretchen Corbett

From North Korea to China to the United States, YOU FOR ME FOR YOU follows two sisters who have nothing but each other left as they explore the worlds within these worlds. In the supernatural but emotionally visceral universe Chung creates, we follow Junhee as she races to the future at the pace of American culture, which is to her both alien in its language and customs, and excessive in its choices and responsibilities. Meanwhile, Minjee searches for hope in the twisted and terrifying labyrinth of modern day North Korea. Both learn the harrowing truth: that sacrifice is required for survival. THIS PLAY IS PRODUCED IN COLLABORATION WITH OUR PARTNERS: Asian Pacific American Network of Oregon (APANO) has worked for social justice for over 15 years, and continues to evolve as Oregon’s leading Asian and Pacific Islander grassroots advocacy organization. The Korean American Coalition (KAC) is a national nonprofit, nonpartisan community advocacy organization. KAC’s mission is to foster a strong Korean American community in Oregon by promoting Korean American participation in civic, legislative and community affairs through advocacy, community service, leadership development and cultural education. The Korean Student Association at Portland State University aims to promote reconciliation and harmony between Koreans and Americans and other international students at PSU. The KSA will support them by assisting new incoming students with housing, information on the job market and life around campus.

P4 | PORTLAND PLAYHOUSE A CHRISTMAS CAROL

MAEVE O’CONNER (Ensemble) especially

wants a mini pig. Maeve sang (in French of course!) in Portland Opera’s Carmen. Prior roles: Ellen in Number the Stars (North End Players), Sorv in The Left Hand of Darkness (Hand2Mouth/Portland Playhouse collaboration), and a featured zombie in the film Zompocalypse: Dead End. Everything that I am is because of my university and my family and for them both I am so very thankful. Merry Christmas everyone!

ASHLEY NICOLE WILLIAMS (Ensemble)

Graduated in 2007 with a BFA: next stop LA. Los Angeles took her into the worlds of television (Big Bang Theory, Two and a Half Men) and feature film production (My Sister’s Keeper). In 2009, she returned to her rich and verdant Northwest roots and began freelance collaborations with local Portland theaters. Today her freelance work continues to grow, and Ashton also manages the costume shop for the Lewis and Clark College Theatre Department.

SPONSOR SPOTLIGHT HAROLD GOLDSTEIN & CAROL STREETER Why do you support theater and arts education? CAROL: Theater and arts education are important in our culture. There used to be arts education through the schools, but there really isn’t much anymore. Arts education and performances can keep a community healthy. HAROLD: Arts in America needs to be supported by donations, because with the exception of commercial art it won’t be sustainable. Art brings people the ability to express themselves in meaningful ways. CAROL: It enriches people lives. Portland Playhouse performances have really enriched my life.

How does Portland Playhouse’s mission statement resonate with you? CAROL: I love the inclusiveness of the mission statement. I don’t think they specifically used the world “inclusion”, but that’s what it’s all about, including everyone. HAROLD: I’m just so pleased that the Portland Playhouse is a mission driven organization, and that we hold to that.

What is your favorite Portland Playhouse memory? HAROLD: My favorite memory is when the community came out to City Hall to support our staying in the community and not being closed down. CAROL: The apprentice shows. The first time I saw the apprentice shows I sat there and cried through the whole thing. And then I went again the next night and cried again. I’m just so amazed that people can get up there and open themselves up like that. It makes me feel like I know the apprentices.

What are your hopes for Portland Playhouse’s future? HAROLD: Mine is that we can continue to put on the level of performances that we do, and that we can make our building into an attraction that will bring people into the neighborhood and make it a premier experience for people to attend performances. CAROL: I love the apprentice program and the Shakespeare in the schools program, and I would love like to see those continue forever, because I think they offer unique opportunities to students.
