FROM THE DIRECTOR My grandmother took me to see A Christmas Carol at a tiny theatre in a small town about 40 minutes from my our home in Harrisonburg, Virginia. These dates with her were special moments of my childhood. We drove to the Smithsonian Art Museum in DC, to the Opera, to the Kennedy Center to see the first tour of The Phantom of the Opera, but this trip to the Wayside Theatre was the first. I remember my terror and delight when Scrooge’s bed started to SHAKE. How was it shaking like that?! Magic. Here were adults playing dress up, running around, screaming, and having much more fun than any other grownups I had ever seen. I was hooked. I loved the play, but what I remember the most is the feeling of adventure and exploration with my grandmother. She wanted to show me the world, and share all of the most creative parts of it with me. I grew up Mennonite and parts of our family were conservative, and we even had an Old Order Mennonite babysitter who would come in a horse and buggy. But my grandmother was wild. She always drove a sports car, a Nissan 300ZX at the time. She always encouraged me to follow my dreams, and told me that I could do anything I set my mind to. But, “Be a good person!” She used to say to me, “Don’t be different, just to be different. Be different because you find something better.” I come back to this play every year because I am Scrooge. I forgot to honor and remember the past. I long for a ghost from the past to visit me and wake me up. To carry me back to Christmas Eve at my grandmother’s house with her Frank Sinatra Christmas album playing and her red cut glass water goblets, and hidden coins under our salad plates. To see my grandfather sitting at the head of the table, stern and weary from work ask us to take hands as he says the blessing. And then there’s the Present. For me, and for Nikki, this means juggling the endless tasks of raising two kids, working full time jobs (thank you Portland Playhouse!), staying engaged with our friends, and trying to be active members of our community. It’s impossible. It’s inconceivable to do anything other than stay just ahead of the next crisis. I find my thoughts to be in a loop of chaos and frustration, with a repeated refrain of “Enjoy these

But my grandmother was wild. She always encouraged me to follow my dreams, and told me that I could do anything I set my mind to. But, “Be a good person!” She used to say to me, “Don’t be different, just to be different. Be different because you find something better.”

years. They are the most precious. And will be gone before you know it.” For Scrooge, it takes a powerful force to truly wake up to the present moment. His journey to the Past makes space in his heart for the possibility of change. His experiences in the Present awake his desire to live a more full, open, vulnerable and giving life. But can people really change? Can you? Here is the primary question of A Christmas Carol. Is real change possible? Can we transcend the person we have become through the long march of time, and be reborn into a new, better, kinder, more accepting person? Scrooge gets to ask this question as he comes face to face with his own death. “The course of our lives foreshadow certain ends, to which, if we persevere, they must lead. But if a life should change its course will the ends be changed?” This is why I do this play, to ask myself this question, to remember my grandmother, and to wake up to the present moment. And of course, I’m still a sucker for a good shaking bed gag. In love and kindness to all you “fellow passengers to the grave”

–Brian Weaver.
