SPOTLIGHT BOARD MEMBER & FORMER APPRENTICE
NATASHA TERRANOVA WHEN WERE YOU FIRST INTRODUCED TO PORTLAND PLAYHOUSE? By happy accident, several years ago I was chatting with a friend who was on his way to see Fiction at The Playhouse and he offered to bring me along. I remember stepping out of crisp fall air into the warm, soft light of the church. Occasionally in small theaters there exists an ambiance that seems to emanate from a play backwards and forwards through time. Maybe Einstein wrote about this phenomenon at some point. It’s as if the energy generated during the show creates some sort of space-time event such that the essence of the creation not only carries a resonance in its audience for many years to come but also cascades over the preshow audience from the moment they walk in the door and begin to mingle with each other and with the theater space itself. Arguably, perhaps, this is less a mystical event than a testament to raconteurs who know what they’re doing. Tomato/tomato, I say. In any case, such was my experience on the night I saw Fiction in the fall of 2009, and I’ve been hooked on The Playhouse ever since.
WHAT DO YOU FIND MOST REWARDING ABOUT BEING INVOLVED WITH THE PLAYHOUSE? More than anything, my interactions with Portland Playhouse serve as a reminder of the unity that exists all around us and is always available if we decide we want to see it. The culture here helps me to stay in touch with the place deep inside myself that is always still. Communing with that still place makes anything possible: new ideas arise; habitual thinking falls away; assumptions about the way things are, and therefore must be, lose their rigidity; ways of thinking and doing become less fixed; and perhaps most importantly, stillness reveals a place from which to deeply listen. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE PORTLAND PLAYHOUSE MEMORY? I will always remember the sensation imbuing me as the packed church flooded out onto Prescott Street after the final performance of Radio Golf. It was the same experience I had as a 12-year-old when leaving our neighborhood theater after seeing a show that inspired me. There was a grassy hill near that theater and when the play let out I would log roll down that hill over and over, sprinting up to the top just to fling myself back down again as hard and as fast as I could. Children, I think, intuitively understand how vital stories are to our perception of the world around us and in informing the kind of reality we choose to create here. We grown-ups, on the other hand, often have a harder time remembering what’s important. Leaving The Church on that sunny day in June of 2010, wholly sensing the same unity between artifice and reality that galvanized my long ago log rolling days, I hopped on my bicycle and raced downtown in record time, flinging myself wholeheartedly into the business of the day with a renewed sense of optimism. Although I was headed to SW Montgomery Street that day, if somebody had asked, I’m pretty sure I’d have sworn up and down I was on my way to 1839 Wylie Avenue.
EDUCATION AT PORTLAND PLAYHOUSE We encourage students of all ages to explore human behavior in a safe and nurturing environment. We do this by utilizing Shakespeare text, Viewpoints, yoga, voice work, actor/director collaboration, and individual mentorships in all areas. Our programs build confidence and self-esteem, challenge and examine social perspectives, foster relationships through artistic collaboration, and create empathy through story telling. We offer the Fall Festival of Shakespeare for middle and high school students, residencies in schools and businesses, and a year-long apprentice program for college graduates.
Get your school involved! Email nikki@portlandplayhouse.org or call our office at 503-4885822 to learn more about bringing our Fall Festival of Shakespeare or a residency to your school.

APPRENTICE COMPANY SOLO SHOWS June 6 & 7, 7pm Each year our Apprentice Company builds solo shows over the last four months of their leadership. The devising process is deeply personal and reflective, it pushes our young artists to experiment, allows them to see who they really are, and invites each artist to create in a supportive environment. The work is scary and revealing, as it should be. My hope is to awaken in each artist a desire to create even when no one will hire them. Our work must move through us, and as artists we must be able to create from nothing.

GET
INVOLVED! There are all sorts of ways to join our community: • Volunteer as a beer-tender, usher, or greeter and earn a ticket to see the show! • Check out our Raffle or Wishlist (we’re especially in need of bus tickets/passes, bicycles for apprentice transportation, meal and housing donations, and gift certificates of all sorts)
• Help out in our office, run an event committee, or lend a hand with fundraising
Your contributions are greatly welcome and we’d love to hear from you! Contact Anna at volunteer@portlandplayhouse.org for more information or to get involved. P8 | PORTLAND PLAYHOUSE PETER AND THE STARCATCHER
