WEAVING WOMEN TOGETHER A WORKSHOP PRODUCTION
By Nikki Weaver | Directed by Adrienne Campbell-Holt
on Christmas Eve and guide the grumpy miser through a transformative journey towards friendship and love.
In October 2015, Nikki Weaver sent a letter to 60 women - some she knew and some she didn’t - requesting a piece of fabric
“An immersive musical wonderland that embodies the holiday spirit.” - PORTLAND MONTHLY
and an explanation of its personal value. The result: Weaving Women Together is an entirely female-driven piece about the loss of Nikki’s mother and how she has collected her in other women, and a magic skirt made entirely of the tales - and fabric - shared by these women.

Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright August Wilson examines black life and race relations in 1950’s Pittsburgh. The recent film adaptation directed by Denzel Washington was nominated for several Academy Awards, with Viola Davis winning Actress in a Supporting Role as Rose. This will be the seventh of Wilson’s acclaimed, “American Century Cycle” that the Playhouse has staged.
I believe in the American Theater. I believe in it ’s power to inform about the human condition, it ’s power to heal... it ’s power to uncover the truths we wrestle from uncertain and sometimes unyielding realities. - AUGUST WILSON

Funny, sweet , heroic, and musical, Scarlet manages to stay true to history and, of course, Nathaniel Hawthorne’s novel. It’s a heart-wrenching tale of two star-crossed lovers and a scorned husband who is consumed with hatred. A world premiere musical in partnership with PHAME and Bitch Media.

PORTLAND PLAYHOUSE
Our mission is to create a space where ALL people can come together to celebrate the complexity of our shared human experience.
A WORLD AWAKENED BY THE WONDER OF THEATRE.
L-R: Marc-Daniel Domond, Alex Colas, Andrew Colas, Hermann Colas Jr. and Aneshka Colas-Dickson.
Our historic church, our “house of play” will be converted into a beautiful and functional space for our audience, actors, and neighbors in the King community. Our goal is $2.4 million, and at the moment, we’re 79 percent of the way there. Here’s a community partner helping make this possible: With fondness, Alex Colas remembers the church at the corner of Prescott and 6th serving as scenery in the developing story of his childhood. He grew up near the King neighborhood. While he might not have fully realized it at the time, the surroundings instilled a distinct pride of place, a sense of investment in Colas. It shaped him. “I understand this community,” Colas says. Which is why it’s hardly a surprise that Colas, currently the head of the special projects division at Colas Construction, is now guiding the major renovation of that same church, which, of course, is now home to Portland Playhouse. The Playhouse mission resonates with Colas because it’s familiar. “A big part is obviously inclusion, a multitude of different communities and backgrounds,” Colas says. “Being a minority general contractor, one of the only ones in our region, it definitely sounded interesting to find another organization that has similar values and strives to keep different perspectives and levels of inclusion in their program. As a company, that’s pretty much how we operate.”
“THE SPACE IS GOING TO TRANSFORM THAT NEIGHBORHOOD, THAT COMMUNITY, AND THAT CORNER TREMENDOUSLY…”
Whether it’s the rejuvenation of a century-old house of worship or the conversion of abandoned strip clubs into homeless shelters—Colas Construction is in the midst of remodeling its third—the return remains the same. The community ultimately benefits. “It’s going to be completely transformational,” Colas says. “The space is going to transform that neighborhood, that community and that corner tremendously… And the whole non-profit aspect? I know you allow kids from the community to go to performances, charge less or free and all of those things—that’s who we are and that needs to continue. Arts and music—those are the first things they cut in public schools, you know?” That local sensibility is what made Colas Construction attractive to the Playhouse, and the roots obviously run deep. In June 1997, Hermann Colas founded the company as West-Trend Construction, which has thrived and grown into its current state with several of his children—including Alex—serving prominent roles. They’ve never abandoned what they know. “Providing arts and theatre for people in that neighborhood is awesome,” Colas says.
HELP US GROW OUR THEATRE AND MAKE IT LAST Starting in May 2017, we will transform our historic church into a beautiful and functional space for our audience, actors and neighbors in the King community.
WE’VE RAISED 79% OF OUR $2.4M FUNDRAISING GOAL.
