WELCOME
WHITE BIRD’S FIRST CUBAN COMPANY Where has the time gone? We’re already at the end of White Bird’s 18th season. We started with MOMIX’s spellbinding “Alchemia,” and now we are excited and proud to conclude with our very first Cuban company, Malpaso Dance Company. We wish to thank our friends at The Joyce Theater in New York City, Linda Shelton and Martin Wechsler, who introduced Malpaso to the US in Spring 2014, with a program by Artistic Director Osnel Delgado and American choreographer Ronald K. Brown, which The New York Times called a “knockout.” The Joyce is responsible for organizing our engagement and the first tour of Malpaso across the US. We are thrilled to introduce Malpaso with a program featuring two Osnel Delgado works as well as a piece by White Bird and OBT favorite choreographer Trey McIntyre. We are also delighted to have a live band with us—a rarity for White Bird shows. It’s the Afro Latin Jazz Ensemble, founded by Arturo O’Farrill, Grammy-winning composer and musician, who composed the score for the last piece on the program, Delgado’s “24 hours and a dog.” Earlier today we had over 2,700 students and teachers enjoy a special matinee performance by Malpaso and the live band, the culmination of White Bird’s 16th Annual Outreach Project with Portland Public Schools. It is always a treat for us to work with our core group of PPS teachers, led by Kristen Brayson, and witness the wide-eyed excitement of these young people experiencing a dance performance, many for the first time. We want to express great thanks to the vitally important funders of our 16th Annual Outreach Project: Herbert A. Templeton Foundation, Rose E. Tucker Charitable Trust, Enterprise Holdings Foundation, Multnomah County Cultural Coalition, Oregon Cultural Trust, Regional Arts & Culture Council, and Portland’5 Centers for the Arts.
OUR NEW 19th SEASON Please stop by our lobby and mezzanine tables to pick up a copy of our brand new season brochure and to check out the new video preview of our season. It’s a season of great diversity, ranging from Diavolo to Martha Graham Dance Company, from Israel’s Inbal Pinto to Brazil’s Companhia Urbana de Dança. There is even a circus and cooking show, plus 14 stomping Argentine gauchos. You can subscribe at our tables or online at whitebird.org. We wish you a fantastic summer, and we can’t wait to see you back next October to discover a world of amazing dance.

I put them into a bonfire and watched them blacken and spark against the night sky. When the fire went out, I moved some of the charred paper with a stick and found that what was underneath was pristine. In some ways the fire had compacted it, sealed it, made it more of what it is. This struck me as an elegant metaphor for human life. The more we try to burn away and change our exterior, the more our essential born selves become evident and manifest.” — Trey McIntyre
