We are delighted to end our 2018/19 season with three of the most energetic and uplifting companies and artists performing today. David Parsons, formerly a celebrated dancer with the Paul Taylor Dance Company, started his own company Parsons Dance in 1985, and David continues to create work that is physically demanding as well as supremely alive. Our program pays tribute to the vibrant sounds and color of New Orleans—with David’s Whirlaway and Ma Maison by Trey McIntyre, well known to White Bird and Oregon Ballet Theatre audiences. Also David’s Caught will literally take your breath away!
Next up, on April 9 and 10, is the brilliant tap artist Savion Glover. Savion was last with us and in Portland in 2006, and over these intervening years, he has been busier than ever, not only performing but choreographing, teaching and producing as well. His brand new show, All FuNKD’ UP, will showcase Savion’s footwork in all its virtuosic glory, alongside a gifted tap ensemble and a 6-piece funk band. Concluding our season on April 24 is the Portland debut of PHILADANCO. The company was founded in 1970 by one of the most esteemed figures in American dance, Joan Myers Brown. With Joan, we conclude this season’s celebration of six visionary women dance artists. Joan has created a company that pays tribute to African American traditions in dance, and their White Bird program will demonstrate the breadth of powerful choreography being created today by Black artists, performed by exceptionally well-trained dancers. We hope you enjoy our final three shows of the season and look eagerly forward to welcoming you to Season 22 of White Bird in early October with Viva MOMIX! Have a great summer!

DAVID PARSONS (Artistic Director/ Co-Founder) has enjoyed a remarkable career as a director, choreographer, performer, master teacher and producer. Raised in Kansas City, Parsons made it to New York at the age of 17 when he received a scholarship to the Alvin Ailey School. After Ailey, he became an understudy with the Paul Taylor Dance Company and then joined the company as a principal dancer. He stayed for eight years. During summers, he toured with MOMIX; he appeared with Mikhail Baryshnikov and Mark Morris in the first White Oak tour; and he launched his choreographic career by setting work on the Taylor Company and on the National Ballet of Canada, Hubbard Street Dance Chicago, Batsheva Dance Company, and the Paris Opera Ballet. After leaving the Taylor company, Parsons was a guest artist with New York City Ballet for four years before his artistic prowess led him to undertake such diverse projects as choreographing Aida at Arena di Verona and producing and co-choreographing María de Buenos Aires at the Skirball Center, as well as creating the choreography for Fool’s Fire, a 1992 film directed by Julie Taymor. Perhaps one of his most thrilling assignments was choreographing and directing the dance elements for Times Square 2000, the 24-hour festivities in Times Square celebrating the turn
of the Millennium. Parsons continues his involvement in diverse projects, with his most recent gig taking him to Japan, where he choreographed A Knight’s Tale, a new musical theater work directed by John Caird, who previously directed the Broadway and West End productions of Les Misérables and the London’s National Theatre’s production of Candide. Staged at Tokyo’s iconic Imperial Theatre from July 25 through August 29, 2018, the work featured Japanese pop stars in leading roles. In addition to the more than 75 works that he has created for Parsons Dance, Parsons has received commissions from American Ballet Theatre, New York City Ballet, Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, the American Dance Festival, Jacob’s Pillow, the Spoleto Festival, and Het Muziektheater in Amsterdam, among dozens of others. Heralded by The New York Times as “one of the great movers of modern dance,” Parsons has received many accolades throughout his career, including three Choreography Fellowship Grants from the National Endowment of the Arts; the American Choreography Award; the Dance Magazine Award; a Howard Gilman Fellowship, and the Dance Masters of America Annual Award. In May 2018, he received the Capezio Award, one of the most prestigious awards in dance.

DANCE CANDY
Dance Candy is a tight, polished six-pack of musicianship, schooled in the vibrant VCU music scene in Richmond. This all-star lineup features a soulful, sensuous female voice that draws influences from everyone like pop stars Adele and Whitney Houston to R&B greats like Jill Scott and Sharon Jones. The deep groove rhythm section can set the tone for everything from 70s funk to hip hop. The sophisticated, funky leads of the guitar set up the soaring melodies of the trumpet to leave jaws dropped and hearts broken. The thing we love about neo-soul is all the layers—all the influences. Hip hop and pop, jazz and funk and straight-up R&B all creating a big, funky scene of party-down. Dance Candy has got this thing down cold.

Between the Lines is a work that was created and inspired by the architectural drawings of Frank Lloyd Wright who himself was inspired by Beethoven’s lush compositions. Wright often stated that whenever he listened to Beethoven’s music he saw movement and design. The dance illustrates a certain architectural flare with more than a hint of romanticism while drawing influences from choreographic legend Gene Hill Sagan and the classical idiom. This ballet made possible by generous support from the National Endowment for the Arts, Pennsylvania Council on the Arts and The Philadelphia Foundation.

RENNIE HARRIS (Philadelphia Experiment) Rennie Harris is a world renowned dancer, choreographer, and professor of hip-hop dance who is credited for being one of the first artists to bring hip-hop dance to concert stages around the world. In 1992 Harris founded Rennie Harris Puremovement, a hip-hop dance company dedicated to preserving and disseminating hip-hop culture through workshops, classes, hip-hop history lecture demonstrations, long term residencies, mentoring programs and public performances. Harris founded his company based on the belief that hip-hop is the most important original expression of a new generation. With its roots in the inner-city African-American and Latino communities, hip-hop can be characterized as a contemporary indigenous form, one that expresses universal themes that extend beyond racial, religious, and economic boundaries, and one that (because of its pan-racial and transnational popularity) can help bridge these divisions. As a teenager, he founded and captained ensembles such as the Step Masters, The Scanner Boys and for a brief stint of time was a member of the Magnificent Force (NY). The Scanner Boys were an innovative hip-hop dance group that pioneered Philadelphia hip-hop movement in the early 80’s. In 1992 the Scanner Boys performed for the last time at Dancing in the Streets at 30th Street Station in Philadelphia. Harris then formed this new company, Rennie Harris, dedicated to preserving and disseminating hip-hop culture. MARLISA BROWN-SWINT Artistic Administrative Assistant
A native Philadelphian, Marlisa was introduced very early to the world of dance. She grew up in and around The Philadelphia School of Dance Arts, little did she realize this was the beginning of a very special relationship. Then and now dance classes and recitals are a part of her daily routine. Ms. Brown-Swint now assistant to the Director (her mom) for The Philadelphia School of Dance Arts, runs it like the prodigy she is. As Artistic Administrator she handles many duties especially the touring for PHILADANCO. Marlisa also over-sees PHILADANCO’s youth ensemble D/3; organizing classes, rehearsals and performance schedules. A number one “Dive Mom” Marlisa has two talented daughters following her footsteps Amari Noelle (gold medal nationally rated diver) and Mariah Dannielle (a rhythmic gymnast).
