INTRODUCING COMPANIES FROM CANADA AND CHINA— AND THE RETURN OF THE TROCKS Welcome to 2019 and three months of nonstop dance from White Bird. In January and February we resume Uncaged and our White Bird Dance Series with three highly diverse companies from Canada, the US and China. Shay Kuebler is a truly original choreographer and dancer from Vancouver, BC. We are proud to host the U.S. debut of his company Radical System Art and the U.S. premiere of Telemetry. We are constantly looking for original dance voices, and Shay is certainly one of them, remarkable for blending two movement forms that PAUL, WALTER AND BARNEY. seem alien to one another: martial arts and tap. Add to that contemporary dance, exciting sound and lighting, and the result is a truly memorable work. Then in February we resume the White Bird Dance Series with two companies as different as night and day. On February 13 at the Schnitzer our favorite men in tutus return, Les Ballets Trockadero de Monte Carlo, with a program showcasing the company’s amazing virtuosity. For those of you wanting an inside look at the Trocks, check out the fascinating documentary Rebels on Pointe, now available through STARZ on Demand.

DESIGNERS Lisa Johnston-Smith Dan Le Jackie Tran

A week later, also at the Schnitzer on February 20, we are proud to host the West Coast debut of Beijing Dance Theater. This season we are celebrating great women in dance, and Beijing Dance Theater is notable for being led by Ms. WANG Yuanyuan, one of China’s leading contemporary choreographers. She trained in both China and California, and our mixed-repertory program will feature movement inspired by Chinese traditions yet offers strikingly innovative dance, enhanced by rich costuming, sound and visuals.

ARTSLANDIA BOX MANAGER Bella Showerman

We hope you enjoy the great diversity of dance that we are offering now and through the remainder of White Bird’s 21st season.

TONIGHT’S PROGRAM Telemetry will be performed without an intermission. Running time approximately 60 minutes. TELEMETRY: an automated communications process by which measurements and other data are collected at remote or inaccessible points and transmitted to receiving equipment for monitoring. Telemetry encompasses wireless data transfer mechanisms including radio, ultrasonic, or infrared systems as well as data transferred over other media such as a telephone or computer networks.

When I first heard of the science of Telemetry and telemetering, it instantly connected me to the idea of how the human body is a telemeter. It is a device—a tool—that translates, relays and communicates intangible and unseen processes. Dance is really such a clear example of telemetering where the body translates an audible form into a visual form. For this reason, the performance places such an importance on the interaction between live sound and lighting and the physical performances. During the research of the project, I continued to search for ideas around how the human body relates to radio sciences and the idea of a monitoring station. The body can be seen as a vessel of memories, history and experiences that are continually relayed, transformed and transmitted to affect our current way of being. The intangible have a very profound physical and material presence.

TELEMETRY // PROJECT ARTISTS SHAY KUEBLER Artistic Director, Choreographer, Performer and Sound Designer Shay has been an independent dance artist in the city of Vancouver and Montreal for the past 8 years. Along with his successes as a collaborator and co-director, he has had the honor of performing and creating his own work for international dance festivals and dance companies across Canada. As a performer, he’s performed with Kidd Pivot, Holy Body Tattoo, Animals of Distinction, and The 605 Collective. ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS As always there’s a massive amount of work done behind the scenes to make this come together. I would first like to thank The Chuzpah! Festival and Mary Louise Albert for their steadfast support of the company for over 3 seasons. There’s no doubt that this project and the work that has been developed through the past seasons would have been as successful without your support. The artists and I greatly thank you for your support. This project in particular owes a lot to the contributions of a number of arts organizations who partnered together to support the life of this project. Thank you to Erin Kennedy at The Vernon District Performing Arts Centre and Cicela Manson at Artspring Theatre for partnering together to support the creative residency periods of Telemetry this season. These residencies were instrumental in discovering the greatest depths of technological and choreographic innovation and integration. Radical System Art would like to thank The Dance Centre, Mirna Zagar and Raquel Alvaro for supporting the very first creative residency for Telemetry in 2015. This planted the seed from which this project grew – Thank you! The company and artists owe our gratitude to the Canada Council for the Arts, The BC Arts Council and The City of Vancouver for their support of the company, and specifically the development of this piece. I thank the dancers for their tireless effort and dedication. It has been demanding, both mentally and physically, and I’m so thankful to have such a room of badasses to share this work and this moment on my artistic journey. I must thank my manager Brent Belsher for continuing to support the company and our work. He is ensuring a longer life for the art we are developing, and his work is just as equally tireless and steadfast. Thank you to Eric Chad and Craig Alfredson for their ingenuity and creativity, and for bringing such a dynamic vision to life. Lastly, thank you to my family and to my Abbey for the support, trust, encouragement and compassion you give to me on such a regular basis. –Shay Kuebler

ChopEniana is an “abstract” classical ballet, without narrative structure or defined characters. Although it atmospherically suggests Giselle and La Sylphide, the sentiments aroused spring from the sublime music of Chopin--the evanescence of dreams, desire, and melancholy.

Paquita is a superb example of the French style as it was exported to Saint Petersburg in the late 19th Century. Paquita was originally a ballet-pantomine in 2 acts, choreographed by Joseph Mazillier, to music by Ernest Deldevez. The story had a Spanish theme, with Carlotta Grisi (creator of Giselle) as a young woman kidnapped by gypsies, who saves a young and handsome officer from certain death. Premiering at the Paris Opera in 1846, the ballet was produced a year later in Russia by Marius Petipa. Petipa commissioned Ludwig Minkus, the composer of his two most recent successes (Don Quixote and La Bayadere) to write additional music in order to add a brilliant “divertissement” to Mazillier’s Paquita. Petipa choreographed for this a Pas de Trois and a Grand Pas de Deux in his characteristic style. These soon became the bravura highlights of the evening-to the point that they are the only fragments of Paquita that have been preserved. The dancers display a range of choreographic fireworks, which exploit the virtuoso possibilities of academic classical dance, enriched by the unexpected combinations of steps.

LES BALLETS TROCKADERO DE MONTE CARLO // COMPANY HISTORY Les Ballets Trockadero de Monte Carlo was founded in 1974 by a group of ballet enthusiasts for the purpose of presenting a playful, entertaining view of traditional, classical ballet in parody form and en travesti, Les Ballets Trockadero first performed in the late-late shows in Off-Off Broadway lofts. The Trocks, as they are affectionately known, quickly garnered a major critical essay by Arlene Croce in The New Yorker, which combined with reviews in The New York Times and The Village Voice established the Company as an artistic and popular success. By mid–1975, the Trocks’ loving knowledge of dance, comic approach, and commitment to the notion that men can, indeed, dance en pointe without falling flat on their faces, was already garnering attention beyond the Company’s New York home. Articles and notices in publications such as Variety, Oui, The London Daily Telegraph, as well as a Richard Avedon photo essay in Vogue, made the Company nationally and internationally known. The 1975–76 season was a year of growth and full professionalization. The Company found management, qualified for the National Endowment for the Arts Touring Program, and hired a full-time teacher and ballet mistress to oversee daily classes and rehearsals. Also in this season, they made their first extended tours of the United States and Canada. Packing, unpacking, and repacking tutus and drops, stocking giant-sized toe shoes by the case; running for planes and chartered buses all became routine parts of life. Since those beginnings, the Trocks have established themselves as a major dance phenomenon throughout the world. They have participated in dance festivals worldwide and there have been television appearances as varied as a Shirley MacLaine special, The Dick Cavett Show, What’s My Line?, Real People, On-Stage America, with Kermit and Miss Piggy on their show Muppet Babies, and a BBC Omnibus special on the world of ballet hosted by Jennifer Saunders. A documentary about the company, Rebels on Pointe by Bobbi Jo Hart, had its theatrical release in 2017. Awards that the Trocks

20

have garnered over the years include: Best Classical Repertoire from the prestigious Critic’s Circle National Dance Awards (2007) (UK); the Theatrical Managers Award (2006) (UK); and the 2007 Positano Award (Italy) for excellence in dance. In December 2008, the Trocks performed for members of the British royal family at the 80th anniversary Royal Variety Performance, to aid of the Entertainment Artistes’ Benevolent Fund, in London. The Trocks’ numerous tours have been both popular and critical successes - their frenzied annual schedule has included appearances in over 35 countries and over 600 cities worldwide since its founding in 1974, including seasons at the Bolshoi Theater in Moscow and the Chatelet Theater in Paris. The Company continues to appear in benefits for international AIDS organizations such as DRA (Dancers Responding to AIDS) and Classical Action in New York City, the Life Ball in Vienna, Austria, Dancers for Life in Toronto, Canada, London’s Stonewall Gala and Germany’s AIDS Tanz Gala. The original concept of LES BALLETS TROCKADERO DE MONTE CARLO has not changed. It is a Company of professional male dancers performing the full range of the ballet and modern dance repertoire, including classical and original works in faithful renditions of the manners and conceits of those dance styles. The comedy is achieved by incorporating and exaggerating the foibles, accidents, and underlying incongruities of serious dance. The fact that men dance all the parts—heavy bodies delicately balancing on toes as swans, sylphs, water sprites, romantic princesses, angst-ridden Victorian ladies—enhances rather than mocks the spirit of dance as an art form, delighting and amusing the most knowledgeable, as well as novices, in the audiences. For the future, there are plans for new works in the repertoire: new cities, states and countries to perform in; and for the continuation of the Trocks’ original purpose: to bring the pleasure of dance to the widest possible audience. They will, as they have done for more than forty-four years, “Keep on Trockin’.”

MEET THE ARTISTS LUDMILA BEAULEMOVA, famed country and western ballerina, formerly prima ballerina of the grand Ole Opry, recently defected from that company when they moved to their new Nashville home. The rift was caused by their refusal to stage the ballet with which her name has become synonymous, I Never Promised You a Rose Adagio. NINA ENIMENIMYNIMOVA’S frail spiritual qualities have caused this elfin charmer to be likened to a lemon soufflé, poised delicately on the brink of total collapse. Her adorably over-stretched tendons exude a childlike sweetness that belies her actual age. HELEN HIGHWATERS has defected to America three times and been promptly returned on each occasion—for “artistic reasons.” Recently discovered “en omelette” at the Easter Egg Hunt in Washington, D.C., she was hired by the Trockadero, where her inexplicable rise to stardom answers the musical question: Who put the bop in the bop-shibop shibop? NINA IMMOBILASHVILI has, for more years than she cares to admit, been the Great Terror of the international ballet world. The omniscient and ubiquitous Immobilashvili is reputed to have extensive dossiers on every major dance figure, living and/or dead. This amazing collection has assured her entree into the loftiest choreographic circles; the roles she has thus been able to create are too numerous to mention. We are honored to present this grand dame in her spectacular return to the ballet stage. ELVIRA KHABABGALLINA, voted the girl most likely to, is the living example that a common hard-working girl can make it to the top. Our friendly ballerina was pounding the pavement looking for work when Trockadero found her. Her brilliant technique has endeared her to several fans, as well as to some of the stage hands. Her motto is “a smile is better than talent.” Her nickname is... well, never mind what her nickname is. IRINA KOLESTEROLIKOVA was discovered by kindly peasants, along with Rasputin’s boot, adrift in a basket on the river Neva. Her debut at the Maryinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg was marred by her overzealous grand jete into the Tsar’s box, impaling a Grand Duchess. Banished from Russia, she made her way arduously to New York, where she founded, and still directs, the Ecole de Ballet de Hard-Nox. Her most famous exercise is her warm-up, which consists of a martini and an elevator.

LES BALLETS TROCKADERO DE MONTE CARLO // MEET THE ARTISTS VARVARA LAPTOPOVA is one of those rare dancers who, with one look at a ballet, not only knows all the steps but can also dance all the roles. As a former member of the Kiev Toe and Heel Club, she was awarded first-prize at the Pan Siberian Czardash and Kazotski Festival for artistic mis-interpretation.

MINNIE VAN DRIVER Always running to rehearsals, costume fittings and performances, Miss Driver has a strong sense of movement. She has performed worldwide and has a natural aptitude for touring. Famous for her beautiful port de bras, she gives credit to her many hours behind the wheel.

SONIA LEFTOVA, “The Prune Danish of Russian Ballet,” abandoned an enormously successful career as a film actress to become a Trockadero ballerina. Her faithful fans, however, need not despair as most of her great films have been made into ballets: the searing “Back to Back,’” the tear-filled “Thighs and Blisters,” and the immortal seven-part “Screams from a Carriage.” Because of her theatrical flair, Sonia has chosen to explore the more dramatic aspects of ballet, causing one critic to rename her Giselle, “What’s my Line?”

GUZELLA VERBITSKAYA Guzella was born on a locomotive speeding through the Ural Mountains. She quickly realized the limitations of her native folk dancing and quaint handicrafts. After her arrival in America, she learned everything she now knows about ballet from a seminar entitled: “Evil Fairies on the Periphery of the Classical Dance.”

EUGENIA REPELSKII The secrets of Mme. Repelskii’s beginnings lie shrouded behind the Kremlin wall; in fact, no fewer than six lie in the wall (in jars of assorted sizes). Dancing lightly over pogroms and other sordid reorganizational measures, Eugenia has emerged as a ballerina nonpareil whose pungency is indisputable. ALLA SNIZOVA enjoyed great success as a baby ballerina at the mere age of 9. Being a child prodigy, she developed serious allergy problems and could only perform short pieces. Known as the “little orphan,” Miss Snizova joined the Trockadero on tour, appearing cloaked in an enigma (complete with zip-out lining). A consummate actress, she has danced the part of Little Miss Markova and the title role of Glinka’s Popoy-the Sailor Man. OLGA SUPPHOZOVA made her first public appearance in a KGB line-up under dubious circumstances. After a sevenyear-to-life hiatus, she now returns to her adoring fans. When questioned about her forced sabbatical, Olga’s only comment was “I did it for Art’s sake.” Art, however, said nothing. MAYA THICKENTHIGHYA’s radioactive properties prevented her from appearing with the Trockadero until her recent release from a special sanitarium on the Black Sea. A brilliant virtuoso in the Moscow style, Madame Thickenthighya’s torque was applied to the running of Generator 14 near the Gorsky Dam during the period of her political disgrace. She is, this season, reinstated to her unique position in the ballet world. 22

JACQUES D’ANIELS was originally trained as an astronaut before entering the world of ballet. Strong but flexible, good natured but dedicated, sensible but not given to unbelievable flights of fantastic behavior, Mr. d’Aniels is an expert on recovering from ballet injuries (including the dread “Pavlova’s clavicle”). BORIS DUMBKOPF has been with the greatest ballerinas of our time and he has even danced with some of them. One of the first defective Russian male stars, he left the motherland for purely capitalistic reasons. Amazingly, between his appearances on television and Broadway, in movies, commercials, magazines and special events, and women’s nylons, he occasionally still has time to dance. KETEVAN IOSIFIDI Ketevan was dismissed from the Kirov Ballet in 1991 when he blackmailed the horn section of the orchestra and forced them to play Papa Don’t Preach in the third act of Romeo and Juliet while he vogued en pointe. Though Ketevan’s appreciation of high culture is second to none, he still thinks that prima donna means any song recorded before Like a Virgin. NICHOLAS KHACHAFALLENJAR the demi-semi-hemi-character dancer from innermost Outer Tashkent, was awarded the Order of Stalin for his partnering techniques. Although no ballerina has ever lived to describe the thrill of his touch, he continues to astound the public (and elude the police) with his brute strength. He is fondly known in the Trockadero as “Igor the Crusher.” STANISLAS KOKITCH, “The Forgotten Man” of ballet, is hardly ever mentioned in reviews by critics or in discussions by

devoted balletomanes despite having created several important roles in nowforgotten ballets. He is the author of “The Tragedy of My Life,” an autobiography not at all reliable. ANDREI LEFTOV “The Prune Danish of Russian Ballet”, abandoned an enormously successful career as a film actor to become a Trockadero premier danseur. His faithful fans, however, need not despair as most of his great films have been made into ballets: the searing “Back to Back,” the tear-filled ‘Thighs and Blisters,” and the immortal seven-part “Screams from a Carriage.” Because of his theatrical flair, Andrei has chosen to explore the more dramatic aspects of ballet, causing one critic to rename his Siegfried, “What’s my Line?” THE LEGUPSKI BROTHERS Sergey and Vladimir are not really brothers, nor are their names really Sergey or Vladimir nor are they real Russians, nor can they tell the difference between a pirouette and a jete...but...well...they do move about rather nicely ...and...they fit into the costumes. MIKHAIL MUDKIN, the famed Russian danseur for whom the word “Bolshoi” was coined, comes to American from his triumphs as understudy to a famous impresario in the role of the Bear in Petrushka. BORIS MUDKO is the Trocks’ newest danseur, having joined only last year. Boris is a drunken but talented Russian from Dzerzhinsk, in the former Soviet Union. He insisted on an audition while the company was on tour. It took some time to sober him up to make him coherent —he was given gallons of tea and several enemas – but finally he was accepted into the company. He has since given up all drink and is doing quite well. MIKHAIL MYPANSAROV soared into prominence as the first defector whose leave-taking was accomplished at the virtual insistence of the defectees (although in subsequent days Mypansarov was accused of abandoning his joyous comrades for “a mountain of beer and an ocean of dollars”). His meteoric rise to stardom caused him to be named Official Bicentennial Porteur by a committee of New York balletomanes who singled out his winning smile and losing feet. YURI SMIRNOV At the age of sixteen, Yuri ran away from home and joined the Kirov Opera because he thought Borodin was a prescription barbiturate. Luckily for

DANCERS the Trockadero he soon discovered that he didn’t know his arias from his elbow and decided to become a ballet star instead. INNOKENTI SMOKTUMUCHSKY is known only to the most cultured and refined balletomanes in the dark alleyways of St. Petersburg. Originally a promising dancer-choreographer, his only ballet, Le Dernier Mohicain, was stolen by the director of the company. In severe depression and shock, he burned his ballet slippers and fled to the sewers, only to surface these forty years later. WILLIAM VANILLA Despite the fact that he is American, he is very popular within the company. He is extremely personable, the ballerinas very much enjoy dancing with him, the management finds him agreeable, his costumes are never soiled, his fans admire his directness, he photographs well, he keeps regular hours, brushes his teeth after every meal, and he has never said a bad word about anybody. He will never really understand Russian ballet.

TONIGHT’S PROGRAM FAREWELL, SHADOWS Excerpt from Wild Grass, which premiered internationally at The Kennedy Center in 2014

ABOUT THE COMPANY BEIJING DANCE THEATER Founded in 2008, Beijing Dance Theater (BDT) is led by its choreographer WANG Yuanyuan together with visual artists TAN Shaoyuan and HAN Jiang. It has collaborated with many internationally renowned dramatists, musicians and designers, enriching the international dance stages with its world-class productions, each of which represents the highest level of Chinese contemporary dance. BDT’s repertoire includes: Stirred from a Dream, a dance-drama adapted from the Kun Opera Peony Pavilion; Diary of Empty Space, an energetic triple-bill and the company’s opening performance; Haze, a contemplation in a time of crisis; Prism, a triple-bill featuring work by choreographers from Sweden, Denmark, and Canada; and Color of Love, a sensual exploration of the emotional landscape of women in their 20s, 30s, and 40s. In June of 2010, the company premiered Martlet (Bird Without Feet), which depicts life in Beijing. All of these works have captured global attention. During 2011–2012, BDT will tour Europe and the US to perform Haze. In 2011, BDT presented Golden Lotus at the Hong Kong Arts Festival. They are also going to presenting Middle collaborating with French choreographer Anthony Egea at Festival Croisements, as well as Hesitation with the well-known Chinese theater director LIN Zhaohua.

“I am but a shadow, about to depart and sink into darkness. But darkness will swallow me, even as light will vanish me. Yet I will not linger ambivalently between light and darkness: I would rather sink into darkness. Yet I linger between light and darkness; know not whether it is dusk or dawn. Let me raise my ashen grey hand and feign a toast; I shall journey far, far away, unbeknownst to all.” ~LU Xun CHOREOGRAPHY: WANG Yuanyuan MUSIC: Kangding Ray (France) LIGHTING DESIGN: HAN Jiang COSTUMES: WANG Yuanyuan

INTERMISSION CROSSING Onto a dark and empty stage, a single dancer enters from stage right to the quiet hum of white noise. The single act of marking his path begins the action of this piece, and a single streamer falls, vertically dividing the stage, as the industrial cry of the original music by WU Jun and LIU Bo begins. Crossing traces the struggles of the individual dancers to mark the emptiness, and evolves as simple white horizontal and vertical streamers fill and reconfigure the space. Asymmetrical in form, the piece progresses as solos, duets and trios fill the evolving set, pitting lyrical movement against the stark realities of the space and sound. Crossing premiered in summer, 2008, at the Lyric Theater in Hong Kong. CHOREOGRAPHY: WANG Yuanyuan MUSIC: WU Jun & LIU Bo LIGHTING DESIGN: HAN Jiang COSTUMES: WU Lei

INTERMISSION HAMLET The story of Shakespeare’s melancholy Prince is reimagined in the universal language of ballet. Inspired by WANG’s collaboration on FENG Xiogang’s 2006 film The Banquet, itself based on the tale, WANG Yuanyuan’s creation is an exquisite adaptation, capturing the famed struggles of Hamlet as he confronts the horrifying fallout that comes with his father’s murder. MS. WANG YUANYUAN ARTISTIC DIRECTOR / CHOREOGRAPHER Born and raised in Beijing, Ms. WANG Yuanyuan is one of China’s leading modern dance choreographers. She prides herself on being rooted in Chinese traditions while at the same time producing innovative, authentic, and thoughtful contemporary dance works for the world stage. She started as a dancer at the age of 10 at the Affiliated Middle School of Beijing Dance Academy and continued to study choreography at Beijing Dance Academy where she later served as teacher. Between 2000 and 2002, she was further trained at the prestigious Master of Fine Arts (MFA) program at the California Institute of Arts (Cal Arts) School of Dance in Los Angeles, United States. In 1998, she was named resident choreographer of the National Ballet of China and successively staged Butterfly Lovers, Rainbow of the Night, Attraction, Lost Emotion, Fate, and a Chinese version of Nutcracker. Later on, she also choreographed a ballet version of Raise the Red Lantern for film director ZHANG Yimou and the dance sequences for Tan Dun’s music in the film The Banquet for director Feng Xiaogang. Her works have been staged around the globe in the United States, Russia, Korea, France, Bulgaria, Denmark, Singapore, Australia, Greece, Netherlands, Germany, Italy, United Kingdom, Brazil and Mexico. In recognition of her excellence in choreography, she has been invited to serve as guest choreographer at New York City Ballet Choreography Institute, Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts (School of Dance), Royal Danish Ballet and Shanghai Ballet. Aside from her early award as dancer in Paris International Dance Competition, WANG has won “Best Choreographer” awards in Bulgaria Varna International Ballet Competition (IBC), US Jackson IBC, Moscow IBC and Shanghai IBC, which made her the one to win the most “Best Choreographer” awards internationally among Chinese choreographers. In 2008, she founded Beijing Dance Theater with veteran lighting designer HAN Jiang and set designer TAN Shaoyuan. Diary of Empty Space was premiered the same year as their first creation, followed by Stirred from a Dream, Haze, Prism, The Color of Love, Martlet, Harvest, Golden Lotus and Hesitation.
