PAUL, WALTER AND BARNEY PREPARE FOR CUISINE & CONFESSIONS IN MARCH 2017. WATCHING THE FLOUR FLY!
DISCOVERING MOVEMENT FROM MONTREAL AND RIO During this March we have two of our season’s most eagerly anticipated shows: Cuisine & Confessions and Companhia Urbana de Dança. They hail from cities that are as different as night and day, Montreal, Quebec and Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. First up is Cuisine & Confessions. As you may be aware, we have been presenting movementbased circus in recent years. Last season it was TIMBER! from Quebec’s Cirque Alfonse, with those amazing lumberjacks. More and more, circus today integrates dance into its performance as well as incredible acrobatic feats. The 7 Fingers in Montreal, whose Sequence 8 we brought two years ago, now returns with Cuisine & Confessions (Kitchen Confessions) that unites circus arts with food. Perfect for Portland! Please note especially the amazing set, which is actually inspired by the real kitchens of the company members. The following week, also at the Newmark, is Companhia Urbana de Dança. Rio has become renowned for its great urban street dancers. In past years we have presented Bruno Beltrãu’s company and then Compagnie Käfig’s Agua, both featuring outstanding dancers from Rio. Companhia Urbana de Dança, led by Sonia Destri Lie, has received acclaim around the world for its unique blending of dance forms, hip-hop, Afro-Brazilian and contemporary dance, echoing the dancers’ daily lives in Rio’s favelas (shanty towns). There is no question that between these two unique companies, you will be discovering a world of incredible dance movement from two distant corners of the globe. Both shows are perfect for the entire family, young and old. We hope you enjoy them.

By perpetually blurring artistic boundaries, The 7 Fingers strive to reach the universal, extraordinary, indefinable, visceral, and intimate worlds in each human being. Created in 2002 and now made up of 200 artists, administrators, and technicians, the collective offers roughly 1,000 performances a year —both artistic collaborations and signature shows. In 2017, The 7 Fingers will inaugurate its own Creation and Production Centre. The centre, based in heart of Montreal’s Quartier des Spectacles, will house the collective’s trademark creation and production activities all under one roof.

10 THINGS YOU SHOULD KNOW ABOUT CUISINE & CONFESSIONS THE STORIES ARE TRUE Cuisine & Confessions was built on the real-life personal stories of each cast member. Creation began with extensive storytelling sessions, after which directors Shana Carroll and S.bastien Soldevila extracted facts, themes, and images and wove them throughout each act. Everything is based on these real stories.
ALL MUSIC IS ORIGINAL The entire soundtrack was created specifically for the show. Notably, New York jazz club owner and pianist Spike Wilner came to Montreal for extensive recording sessions, providing a selection of piano music to choose from during creation. (Director S.bastien Soldevila is also musical director.)
THE SHOW HAS BEEN PERFORMED IN SEVEN LANGUAGES Cuisine & Confessions has travelled the globe and was first performed in the United States in Boston. Wherever it has been performed, it has been translated into the local language. To date, the show has been presented in English, Italian, Spanish, Russian, French, Swedish, and German.
ALL FOOD IS PREPARED LIVE ON STAGE Food preparation begins on stage during the 30-minute pre-show and continues during the performance, at various times with assistance from audience members. From the minute the house opens through the final bows, food is always cooking—from omelets, to vegetable pasta, to our signature banana bread.
MONTREAL CHEF ALEX WINNIKI HELPED REFINE RECIPES Not only did Alex Winniki help refine the recipes used in the show, but he also gave weekly cooking lessons to the original cast, sharing tips on chopping, slicing, dicing, and more. Each cast member was given a chef ’s knife to practice with at home.
THE SET IS INSPIRED BY THE CAST’S HOME KITCHENS To create the set, scenic designer Ana Capel-lutto asked company members to share photos of their childhood kitchens, their current kitchens, and their “dream kitchens,” greatly inspiring the final design. She also asked each performer to bring in a personal item to keep somewhere on the set, to help create an intimate kitchen space. The set continues to tour with these personal items.
REFRIGERATOR POSTCARDS ARE REAL The cast has collected postcards from every city where they have appeared and placed them on the set’s refrigerator, making it an ever-evolving set-piece.
THEY KEEP A “TO DO” LIST, TOO Observant theatergoers will see a “to-do list” written out on a chalkboard as part of the kitchen set (like a grocery list). This is actually a list of numbers performed in the show, and cast members cross off items as they are completed during each performance.
A CHILD’S GAME INSPIRED THE LYRICS OF THE FINAL SONG The odd phrase “Chop Chop Miam Miam” came from a tickling game the directors had with their 5-year-old daughter. During the show’s creation, the expression was used as a kind of call-and-response game, and it soon became the show’s accidental mantra. When the cast turned it into a song, at first it was as a joke—until everyone decided it was the best way to close the show. The song is also used as a pre-show get-in-the-mood warm-up exercise for the cast.
CAST MEMBERS TAKE TURNS WASHING THE DISHES Every family has its own way of sharing responsibilities, and the Cuisine & Confessions family is no different. Cooking creates a mess, and at the end of each performance, a different cast member cleans up the dishes in our working on-stage sink, adhering to a scheduled rotation 16

ABOUT THE COMPANY COMPANHIA URBANA DE DANÇA When Companhia Urbana de Dança / Sonia Destri Lie made its US debut at New York City Center in 2010, the eyes of even the most “been-there-saw-that” critics opened wide with amazement. Destri’s boldly original mix of contemporary Brazilian dance and hiphop infused both forms with new rigor— meditative one moment, explosive the next. Locating the true heart of hip-hop, Destri strips it of its easy tricks, bringing it back to its original emotional depth, expressive range, and poetic integrity. Founded in Brazil in 2004 by dancer Tiago Sousa and choreographer and Artistic Director Sonia Destri Lie, Companhia Urbana de Dança is an ensemble of street performers working to foster appreciation of the human experience through dance. Destri’s experiences traveling through Europe for work in theater and films exposed her to hip-hop and b-boy techniques. Highly influenced by Brazilian street forms, she began to integrate these techniques into her already established contemporary movement sensibility. Pulling from the favelas of Rio, where many of Destri’s company members grew up, Companhia Urbana de Dança aims to transcend
cultural boundaries while showcasing eclectic skill sets. The work of Companhia Urbana de Dança brings its dancers’ identities, testimonials, and attitudes to the stage, and it does that with a “carioca,” AfroBrazilian accent, which is nevertheless universal. The group is firmly positioned in the most contemporary urban dance scene both in Brazil and internationally. It highlights the talents of young, black, and poor Brazilians in the modern world from an affirming and pluralist stance. Since its creation in 2004, the Company has performed throughout Brazil and abroad in many well-known festivals and theaters, including the world renowned Biennales de la Danse in Lyon, France, (2006, 2008), Fall for Dance at City Center in New York (2010), and Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival (2013). In 2014 the company embarked on its first major tour of the U.S., which included its debut at the Joyce Theater in New York, the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in San Francisco, and the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis; it also returned to Jacob’s Pillow for the world premiere of I. You. We . . . All black (Nêgo).
Highlights from 2015 included a residency and performances at the Biennial of the Americas and Newman Center for the Performing Arts in Denver and a return to the Fall for Dance festival; another tour in the spring of 2016 took the company to nine cities in the U.S. and Canada, including its Los Angeles debut at the Roy and Edna Disney (CalArts) Theater, a return to Miami, premieres in several other cities and its Canadian debut at DanceHouse in Vancouver and the National Arts Centre in Ottawa. In addition to its performances, Sonia Destri Lie and the company strive to connect with children and young adults wherever the company travels, particularly in underprivileged and minority communities, with workshops and classes that joyfully celebrate dance as a means to develop selfconfidence and awareness. Using dance as a medium, their goal is to instill in youngsters a sense that discipline, hard work and love can propel one forward in the direction of one’s dreams.
SONIA DESTRI LIE (ARTISTIC DIRECTOR/CHOREOGRAPHER) is the artistic director and choreographer of Companhia Urbana de Dança. Having received degrees in both Psychology and Ballet, Destri has a unique perspective on human expression and human form. After completing her studies, she travelled throughout Brazil and Europe, working in dance, theatre, film, and musicals. It was then that she discovered hip-hop and b-boy dance. She defined her unique and refreshing interpretation of these styles by infusing them with the rich cultural influences of Brazil and the favelas from within. Her works creatively embrace elements of hip-hop, b-boy, and contemporary dance, as well as Brazilian social dances. Destri’s choreography has been cited for making a significant contribution to the field of dance. She has created an entirely new genre that results in greater appreciation for existing dance styles and the significance of sociocultural influences. Reviews of her performances from both the media and her contemporaries have been nothing short of spectacular. She has received the Best Script Award from the Ford Foundation, the Staging Award from the State of Rio de Janeiro in 2011 for the show Eu Danço, the FADA Award from the City Hall of Rio de Janeiro (2012 and 2013), and the Best Choreography Award by Conseil International de la Danse (CID-Unesco)

COMPANY BIOGRAPHIES COMPANHIA URBANA DE DANÇA Companhia Urbana de Dança is a unique dance group with roots in hip-hop, urban, and contemporary aesthetics from Brazil. The group consists of eight young dancers from Rio de Janeiro. The following are biographies or short excerpts of personal accounts from each of the dancers, describing their journeys of dancing all the way up from the favelas of Rio de Janeiro to the international concert stage. RAFAEL BALBINO (DANCER) “Today
JULIO ROCHA (DANCER) Having
I can say that dance is my life, since I can’t imagine myself without it. I have the same feeling since I started seven years ago. And I really found myself with dance. Why is dance so important for me? Because somehow it helped me to find the right way, especially with the dangers of my neighborhood.”
worked as a baker, lifeguard, gardener, and mason’s helper, Rocha started his dance career from humble beginnings, to say the least. With the support of his father, Rocha grew up with the idea that if he were to follow his dreams, the doors would eventually open for him. Following his father’s advice to be the best he could be, Rocha began studying capoeira, and found the necessary means to accomplish his goals.
JOHNNY BRITTO (DANCER) is a proud member of Companhia Urbana de Dança. Understanding that dance is not as respected as it should be in his hometown of Baixada, he claims that dance has given him a sense of confidence and direction. ANDRÉ FEIJÃO (DANCER) credits dance with giving him not only a sense of identity, but self-confidence as well. Rather than following the “normal” lifestyle of his peers, he found direction in his dance studies; just by dancing, he discovered where he wanted to go in life. “It was like a miracle, like a bright light. I saw that I could be myself.”
MIGUEL FERNANDES (DANCER) When he was 12, Miguel and his friends attended their first funk ball (a nightclub where they play music that brings out brutal behaviours from the crowd) in the favelas of Macacos. Despite this violent introduction to the club scene, Miguel found a love for high energy atmosphere, and eventually, for performance.
JESSICA NASCIMENTO (DANCER) began dancing at an early age and is inspired by the ongoing quest for technical improvement. Waking up at 4 a.m. in her Rio suburb, taking several buses to be at the rehearsal studio by 9 a.m., Nascimento proves to be not only dedicated but disciplined as well. While her mother offers tremendous support, her father still refuses to acknowledge her career. Nascimento finds that despite her father’s opposition, dance is her life and she would not want to be doing anything else.
TIAGO SOUSA (DANCER) Having grown up incredibly shy, Tiago watched as his more gregarious sisters danced hip-hop with their huge circles of friends. Inspired to study dance as a way of breaking out of his introversion— not only in movement, but in his interpersonal relationships as well— Tiago began taking classes. He quickly found himself connecting to the music and the movement while also making new friends and avoiding the potentially violent lifestyle of the favelas. THIAGO WILLIAMS (DANCER) “When I was 13, I used to go to dance clubs every Sunday. There were hip hop battles, social dances, and boy band covers. I discovered Mr. Wiggles and started studying every video that I could find of him. I began performing with cover groups and practicing jazz dance. Having been told to study, to go to university and get a nice job, it was difficult for my family and close friends to accept that I could live just for dance. But once I started supporting myself with my dancing, everything started to change.”
