DISCOVER A WORLD OF DANCE
DIAVOLO
October 6-8, 2016 | Newmark Theatre
CAMILLE A. BROWN & DANCERS October 13-15, 2016 | Newmark Theatre
INBAL PINTO & AVSHALOM POLLAK October 20-22, 2016 | Lincoln Hall, Portland State University
We very much hope you had a relaxing summer and are ready for a great diversity of dance in White Bird’s 19th season. Many of you have asked why we pick the companies we bring each season. We are happy to touch on the whys related to our first three companies. Diavolo—We greatly admire the unique mix of choreography, athletic power and remarkable architectural structures that the performers interact with—and often do battle with. When Diavolo’s visionary Jacques Heim told us we would be getting the World Premiere of his new work “Passengers” involving a train, we could not resist.

A BIG WELCOME BACK
PAUL, WALTER AND BARNEY PREPARE FOR “CUISINE & CONFESSIONS” IN MARCH 2016. WATCHING THE FLOUR FLY!
Camille A. Brown—Camille is one of the strongest voices in dance today and launches our season-long celebration of Great African American Choreographers (followed in November by Reggie Wilson and in April by Ronald K. Brown). We experienced her new work BLACK GIRL: Linguistic Play a year ago at The Joyce Theater in New York City and were incredibly moved by her depiction of what it means to be a young African American woman today. Inbal Pinto & Avshalom Pollak—It has been more than 10 years since we last presented these highly creative Israeli artists. We believe that “Wallflower” is the perfect piece to reintroduce them to Portland. Originally created for the Tel Aviv Museum, “Wallflower” is an unusually intimate and visually powerful work, set against gleaming white walls, perfectly suited for Lincoln Hall and our Uncaged Series. We hope that you find all three companies and artists as inspiring as we do.

WORLD PREMIERE OF L.O.S.T. [LOSING ONE’S SELF TEMPORARILY] PART 1: CUBICLE | PART 2: PASSENGERS PRODUCED BY JENNIFER CHENG | COMMISSIONED BY THE CHENG FAMILY FOUNDATION Throughout the course of our lives, we lose ourselves; mentally, physically and emotionally. When we experience this loss, though temporary, we also experience our capacity to recognize and rise to the challenge of adapting and reshaping who we are in every moment. The constant teetering balance between vulnerability and control is the most natural process of the human experience and is the inspirational center for the collection L.O.S.T. An exploration of what both divides and unites, this series is an abstract study of our transient reality as we traverse through our daily lives and our daily work.
PART 1: CUBICLE (2015)
PART 2: PASSENGERS (2016)
Set in an abstract corporate America, Cubicle explores the human condition under cramped control and a monotonous reality, exposing an underlying counterbalance between freedom and anarchy in the workplace. Anonymity and confinement set the pace in this corporate sea of grey as we witness a multitude of shifting landscapes as abstract representations of a familiar work environment. Boxing in both their sanity and distinctiveness, we witness the struggle to maintain a sense of individuality on the corporate climb as the performers labor against a homogenized work mentality, finding solidarity only within themselves and each other.
Passengers is a mind trip. It is a piece about people caught in the wild loop of their shifting states of mind. Their journey through consciousness is a metaphoric embodiment of the challenges, obstacles and adversity we all face in our waking reality. Their unrelenting search for “identity” and “self” is a powerful reminder that we are merely Passengers on this vehicle called Life.

BIOGRAPHIES DIAVOLO JACQUES HEIM
ARTISTIC DIRECTOR DIRECTOR OF L.O.S.T. Jacques Heim has been a transformative Director for over 20 years. He founded Diavolo in 1992, now newly renamed DIAVOLO | Architecture in Motion®, and has directed the Company’s work ever since. Mr. Heim was born and raised in Paris, France. His earliest experiences with performance came from street performing. He attended Middlebury College (B.F.A. in Theater, Dance, and Film), the University of Surrey in England (Certificate for Analysis and Criticism of Dance), and the California Institute for the Arts (M.F.A., Choreography). Jacques Heim is named directly after his grandfather, the late and revolutionary fashion designer, who in 1946 launched the first ever two piece bathing suit called Atome. Just as his grandfather broke ground in the fashion industry, Jacques Heim continues to challenge and break the mold of conventional wisdom surrounding dance, developing the unique and incomparable aesthetic of Architecture in Motion®. In addition to his work with DIAVOLO, Mr. Heim has worked extensively for other companies in dance, theater, TV, and special events worldwide. Most recently Mr. Heim worked with Guy Caron and Michael Curry as consulting choreographer on Ice Age Live!, a “mammoth” arena show which had its world premiere at London’s Wembley Stadium in November 2012 and is now touring Europe. For Cirque du Soleil, Mr. Heim choreographed KÀ at the MGM Grand, Las Vegas, a destination show featuring apparatus inspired by DIAVOLO structures and architecture. In 2010, he was invited to be a Creative Director for the Opening Ceremony of The 16th Asian Games, in Guangzhou, China. In 2005, Mr. Heim was the Artistic Director for the Taurus Stunt Awards and returned in 2007 to stage a movement/ stunt piece, “The Car”. With the Los Angeles-based Center Theater Group, Jacques created choreography for the stage play, The Stones. On television, his work has appeared on BBC America’s Dancing with the Stars and Bravo’s Step Up and Dance. Jacques Heim taught movement and dance for many years at Ballet Pacifica, California State University, Los Angeles and UCLA. In addition to three USA Fellowship nominations and four Alpert

CAMILLE A. BROWN & DANCERS Recognized for its introspective approach to cultural themes through visceral movement and socio-political dialogues, Camille A. Brown & Dancers soar through history like a whirlwind. Known for high theatricality, gutsy moves, and virtuosic musicality, the Company’s work explores a range of themes with an eye on the past and present. Making a personal claim on history, Camille A. Brown leads her dancers through excavations of ancestral stories, both timeless and traditional, as well as immediate contemporary issues. The work is strongly character based, expressing each choreographic topic by building from little moments to model a filmic sensibility. Theater, poetry, visual art and music of all genres merge to inject each performance with energy and urgency. www.camilleabrown.org.

CHOREOGRAPHER’S NOTE BLACK GIRL: Linguistic Play celebrates the unspoken rhythm and language that Black girls have through Double Dutch, social dances, and hand-clapping games that are contemporary and ancestral. As I began to create the work, I realized that I was exhausted by stereotypes and tropes because, as a Black female director, I battle with them daily. Kyra Gaunt’s book, The Games Black Girls Play, inspired the concept for the work. The word “play” immediately shot out. I started thinking about my childhood and the many games I used to play—Double Dutch, Red Light, Green Light, Marco Polo— and how it was hard for me to find narratives within the media that showcased Black girls being just that: girls. This instantly resonated and became personal. Who was I before the world defined me? What are the unspoken languages within Black girl culture that are multi-dimensional and have been appropriated and compartmentalized by others? What are the dimensions of Black girl joy that cannot be boxed into a smile or a grimace, but demonstrated in a head tilt, lip smack, hand gesture, and more? BLACK GIRL: Linguistic Play showcases and elevates the rhythms and gestures of childhood play, highlights the musical complexity and composition, and claims them as art. It shows the power of sisterhood and the fact that, as we mature, Black girls still play. It is remembering, conjuring, honoring, and healing. It’s a Black girl’s story through her gaze. This work is a gift to myself and Black girls everywhere. If our audiences see parts of themselves in our work—their struggles and their joys— regardless of their color, gender, or socioeconomic background, then I know we have done our job. Let’s play!
